Title: Escape Pod Flash Fiction Contest, Honorable Mention: The Way Before
Post by: Russell Nash on December 04, 2008, 08:34:45 AM
Escape Pod Flash Fiction Contest, Honorable Mention: The Way Before (http://escapepod.org/2008/12/04/escape-pod-flash-fiction-contest-honorable-mention-the-way-before/)

By Anna Schwind (http://slithytoves.sytes.net/~anna/).
Read by Ann Leckie (http://www.annleckie.com/).

When Chasca turned eleven, her father took her to a ship farm, to choose her vessel.  She stood on the observation deck, evaluating the herd.  Chasca selected the farthest ship.  It faced away from the others and bumped the edges of the corral.  She understood.

Rated G.

Yay!!!  ;D ;D ;D

*cough* Excuse me.

This was a really fun story -- a girl and her spaceship, as I think I remember people from the contest calling it.  I really enjoyed listening to it, and Ann gave it a great reading.

I'd appreciate it if we could avoid this language on the forums.

Sorry you didn't like the piece, Steph.

I guess I need more content.  These really short ones just don't work for me, with the sole exception of Cory's.  At least they're over soon.

Did I say "Cory's"?   ???  I meant "Jarod's".  Blame DKT for mentioning Doctorow in one of the later episodes of "Superspiff and the Toothpick Kid" that I listened to yesterday.

Quite an impressive amount of world-building for such a short story.

Still, not entirely happy with it - I think, moreso than most of the other flash stories played lately, this one read like an abridged version of a longer story. Not an incomplete version - I don't think the story should have had more exposition or a different ending - but rather that the language was clipped and felt constrained.

I personally liked it. But, I'm a girl (well girlish grown woman) and this definatly hit my buttons.

I liked this story. Very creative. I like the idea of picking a ship out of a farm.

The language bit has been split off and locked down, for archival purposes, it's here: http://forum.escapeartists.net/index.php?topic=2216.0

Sorry if your on-topic post got caught up in it (this is mainly to Talia), feel free to repost the bits relating to the story.

Cute.  The idea of a ship farm was a cool one.
