Title: Flash: Stepfathers
Post by: Bdoomed on June 20, 2009, 10:25:39 PM
Flash: Stepfathers (http://pseudopod.org/2009/06/20/flash-stepfathers/)

By Grady Hendrix

Read by Nerraux (http://theawfulshow.com/)

He’d spent his free period reading up on the Lurker at the Threshold, the All-in-One and the One-in-All, the Opener of the Way, and now he tried to detect the signs of Its presence. But nothing smelt like the stench of the grave. No hideous ichor was seeping out from underneath his bedroom door. The upstairs hall was painted the same robin’s egg blue that it’d always been and it was not suffocating beneath an encrustation of poisonous mold that glowed a deathly, bioluminescent green. He took a deep breath and opened the door to his bedroom. Yog-Sothoth sat at the end of his bed, absorbed in Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 4.

“Hey,” Billy said, dropping his book bag.

“Hold on,” Yog-Sothoth said without looking up. “I have almost… accomplished my… Pro Challenge.”

Happy Father's Day!!!

So, the Elder Gods like MTV's programming.

I would've thought they'd have better taste than that.

A flash piece that is too long?  Inconceivable!

I liked this a lot except for the fact that the ending was telegraphed and took way to long to get here.

dopey.

I like Lovecraft as much as the next guy, but I'm getting a little tired of Cthulu.  Yet I still like zombies.  I can't explain this.

Hilarious.

The reader sounded a lot like my friend Dave, though I know it wasn't.

At first, the image of an elder god playing Tony Hawk on the Playstation was the most hilarious thing ever. It was then topped by the image of said elder god thinking of ways to get a date with his friend's mom. :D

As the hardcore internets people say--this piece is made of win.

I laughed out loud at this!  And not the usual "LOL" where you just smirk and move on with your life but a real belly laugh, especially at the "Tony Hawk" mention--I hadn't seen that coming at all.  My noisy laughter continued throughout the rest.  Great fun!

This one was fun.  Humorous stories seem to be a rare commodity in the horror genre.

Usually the emotional response I'm looking for in a horror story is... horror.

But it doesn't matter, this made me laugh.  I actually had a moment of disappointment early on in the story when I realized this was flash fiction and would end way earlier than a normal PP.  I agree the ending was telegraphed, but it was still a fun little story.  Can't get the image of an Elder God playing video games and eating microwave burritos out of my head.... lol.  Reminds me of someone I know...  0:-)

for some reason this flash piece appeared un-listened in my iTunes directory, so I listened again.  Still love it!  Definitely one of my favorite flash pieces so far.
