Hey all! Tuesday, I posted this on my LJ (http://krylyr.livejournal.com/247814.html), but am reposting for everyone here, albeit with some slight modifications. I go into more details on my blog if you want to read there; I will try and be relatively brief here.
Essentially, I unofficially declared the next month (through the end of September) "I <3 Escape Artists Month" in an effort to get more people to join the forums and comment on stories they like. If they did that, I'd write, record, and email them a brand new story in time for Halloween - sometime in October, and will ONLY be available for forumites.
Which means YOU.
Since I came up with the idea - Mur, Alasdair, and Samantha Henderson volunteered to help out and write brand new stories for you, too. As a result, it's kind of turning into a mini-anthology for all you forumites.
ETA: And now - here's the final list of contributors: Tim Pratt, Greg van Eekhout, Mur Lafferty, MK Hobson, Tina Connolly, Samantha Henderson, Alasdair Stuart, Amal El-Mohtar, Anna Schwind, Ann Leckie, Erin Cashier, Rachel Swirsky, David Steffen, and D.K. Thompson.
If you're a poster on these forums, you can get these stories. You just have to ask for them :)
Originally, I asked people to PM me. But now since we've got this thread and there are now more people involved, you can just go ahead and just comment here.
ETA: You have to let me know by October 8th if you want the stories, though.
New Posters - please find a story or narration you enjoy, comment in that thread first, and *then* come back here. Forumites who have already commented on stories, just post away here.
Do that, and we'll send you (at least) four FOURTEEN exclusive stories you can't get anywhere else. We'll send them out sometime in October.
Sound good? Any questions? Let me know!
-Dave
-
Do I qualify yet?
-
Spiffy idea. I would love to read the resulting stories. :)
-
Cool idea!
I think I may have commented on a story or two, and I think everyone I know that may be interested in joining the forums already did so. But if there's another way I can help out, let me know.
-
I may have commented on a story or three. Gimme gimme! ;)
If you're looking for ways to entice forumites in, there's always the flash contest stories to peruse as well. The winners will be on the podcast, but there are a lot of damned good stories that didn't make the top 3--even if someone just read the finalists for each contest, that's another couple dozen stories that the general consensus has labeled as being very good.
And even for those top 3, if someone joins now they get to read the story before it's on the 'cast. :D

As I write this, I have the lowest post count of all responders to this thread so far, but I'm working hard on catching up. Plus I hope I'm providing quality, if not quantity. ;)
-
Don't worry Wilson, I've posted a lot less than you. I'm willing to be the token Matross here. I can't ever hope to top the guys who posted here already as far as pithy commentary goes but, I wants free story, please.
-

Sir, are you suggesting I am quantity, not quality?
I'll get you, FOWLIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
I'm willing to be the token Matross here. I can't ever hope to top the guys who posted here already as far as pithy commentary goes but, I wants free story, please.
And so you shall!
Seriously, it doesn't matter if you have 3,000 posts or if you have 2. All you gotta do is register, comment, and comment again :)
-
Oooh Oooh!
*raises paw*

... no. Just that I am not quantity, so hopefully quality. It was all about me.
If you get me, let me know; most people don't. :)

I just listened to Mermaid Tea Party. I'll comment over there, but here, I'm going to SO RAG ON YOU FOR SINGING THE PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN SONG!!! I laughed out loud. You are too fabulous for words.
-
So, it's not enough to just be a forum member, you also have to also specifically ask for the extra stories?
Okay then, I'm asking.
Can't wait!!
And Thanks!
-
So... I know I'm kinda new to the forums, and I haven't posted much yet, but I'd really love some stories! I hope you can find it in your heart to make an exception!
-
Ooo, Halloween stories! Yes please!
I'm an infrequent poster (workin' on that...) but avid reader. Thank you!

Thank you, sir. May I have another?

Gimme, or I'll unleash the wrath of Sean Connery on you:
There is a sitcom over here called Phoenix Nights, set in and around a working men's club in the North of England. It ran for two seasons, it was deeply, deeply brilliant and at least part of that was down to the Rosencrantz and Guildensternian doormen, Max and Paddy. I mention them because in the first episode, there's a running gag where it keeps cutting back to them discussing whether or not it's true that a Sean Connery movie where he's got a wig tends to be crap. Hence:
'Highlander.'
'Wig.'
'Highlander II: The Quickening.'
'Wig.'
Later..
'Hunt for Red October.'
'Wig.'
'The Russia House.'
'No wig'
Later still...
'...That odd one where he got his cock out.'
'Zardoz?'
'That's the one.'
'Wig.'
It loses something in the transcription but still:)
-
Gimme, or I'll unleash the wrath of Sean Connery on you:
Ack! Eyes... burning... !
Mmm, my work here is done...
...until I mention the burning that's Sir Sean's undoubtedly experiencing in his bikini region...
-
Ooh, I'm happy I saw this thread, as September's going to be an offbeat and busy month for me and I don't know how much time I'll have online. Stories? I like stories.

I would definitely love some extra escape pod lovin' this October!
May I please be allowed to get in on this action?

Welcome to The List, Heyes!

Whoa, this has gotten even cooler, which is quite a feat!

Ooh, Tim Pratt, even, my most favorite short story author. Yay!

Hello everyone, I have an idea. Not sure if it's a good idea, or even feasible, but I wanted to get it out there.
Many of my favorite authors from Escape Artists have, or continue to, self-publish. The two I'm most familiar with personally are Robin Sloan ("Mr. Pnumbra's 24 Hour Bookstore") and Tim Pratt (too many to possibly name). Mr. Sloan released his novel about Annabelle Scheme (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/robinsloan/robin-writes-a-book-and-you-get-a-copy) through Kickstarter, and Tim Pratt continued his Marla Mason (http://marlamason.net/) series online for donations and has started his new Nex (http://www.timpratt.org/nex/) story the same way.
What about taking all these fantastic just-for-forumites stories and doing some kind of fundraiser with them, perhaps by having a chapbook published and sold by Escape Artists?
I can think of problems, of course - if the authors want to use the stories for other purposes, or the time and care needed to put this all together. Maybe if the authors donated their rights to the stories, and others with experience in self-publishing volunteered their time to help with the details, it could bring in some money for Escape Pod? Maybe it could even become an annual thing.
I'm certainly not the most qualified person to head up such a project, but I'm willing to do some heavy lifting if there are others who think it's a project worth pursing. Is anyone out there with some relevant experience and time to spare interested?
-
It's a good idea, and unfortunately I only thought about doing something similar after the whole thing really took off. It'd be very cool to do something like that in the future, but it's not in the works right now. (Although if something similar ever does happen, you'll be at the top of the list of people to email ;) )
Technically, though, this isn't an official EA thing. This is something I conceived of to give back to the forumites, and which a few of my friends (all involved in EA one way or another) volunteered to help out with. So all of this is strictly volunteer and For The Love. Ben didn't even know about it until several people had already volunteered to help out, and I decided to email him and get his blessing. Still, as is, it's an unoffical EA thing. There's no contracts, and the authors aren't getting paid, so as-is, I'd feel funny about trying to sell it as something more than what everyone agreed to in the first place.
Here's what I wanted to accomplish:
1) Get more people talking about the stories here on the forums.
2) Get people gushing over my fellow Escape Artists (not just the ones contributing to this, mind you - but also to people who edit, host, slush, write, narrate, or do other stuff for us. Go tell Ben, Ann Leckie, or whoever else how much you appreciate them).
3) Give people who on the forums some extra stories.
Still, if people want to donate/pay subscriptions to EA because of this, that'd be most excellent ;D
-

Happily, thanks for reading this. I hope something in the future along these lines does come up again. I don't have much fund-raising experience, but I have a touch and I'm happy to polish it up in favor of good stories.
-
Me too, please.
(To be clearer: I, too, wish to receive the package of awesome)
-
It's been bloody forever since I've commented on a story, not as much time as I'd like, really. But I have commented. And I shall do so again right... (wait for it)... now.
-
I love stories, and would greatly enjoy even more stories. Thank you all for your generosity!
-
Just me again, saying I've updated the original post with the final group of contributors, which I'll mention here, too:
ETA: And now - here's the final list of contributors: Tim Pratt, Greg van Eekhout, Mur Lafferty, MK Hobson, Tina Connolly, Samantha Henderson, Alasdair Stuart, Amal El-Mohtar, Anna Schwind, Ann Leckie, Erin Cashier, Rachel Swirsky, David Steffen, and D.K. Thompson.
Yes, that's actually 14 stories. So it's going to be like a vampire's baker's dozen for October or something.
I'm really excited for you all to hear this whole thing. It's going to be like a grab-bag of candy for the month of October. Some of the stories are horror, some SF, some fantasy. Some fit Halloween and some are just plain fun, so in honor of Lucy and Linus I've decided to call the whole thing Tricks or Treats, because this bag of goodness has a lot of different flavors, and I think you're all going to really enjoy it.
More to come later!
-
Thanks Mr. Unblinking for pointing the way, I too would like to grovel to have my ears blessed by this wonderful bounty.

Kudos to you Dave for your awesome idea of a package of awesome becoming awesome!
(izzat eloquent or what?)
-
Hehe, eloquence. I've heard of that before...
Also, to all of you non-noobs.
Please excuse my blatant familiarity (current and future) with you.
I know I'm a noob on the forums, but I've been hearing all about many of you guys on the podcasts for ages, so I feel that I already know you. ;)
And yes, when I find time I'll drop in to the lounge and introduce myself, so you all can be familiar with me too. (... as soon as I can find the newbie intro thread thread. Presumably it exists...)
-
Welcome to the forum :)
Here's the link to the new listener threa (http://forum.escapeartists.net/index.php?topic=76.0)d when you're feeling up to stopping by!
-
I've noticed there's been quite a few new story commenters over the weekend who haven't commented in this thread. Maybe they've been PMing Dave, as per the instructions in last week's episode, but I'm hoping they're getting in on the extra stories one way or the other!
-
Please excuse my blatant familiarity (current and future) with you.
Hey don't worry about it. Familiarity breeds consent! (What a minute, do I have that right?)
Anyway, welcome.
-
Here's the link to the new listener thread when you're feeling up to stopping by!
There's a new Listener?

The old one rusted when we left him out in the rain. This model has Sirius satellite radio, though, so it's all good.

I am intrigued by this offer, and would like to subscribe to your newsletter.

Alright, I like all the 3 Pods and I'm looking forward to the exclusives.

Acting like a dog on a hot day, there's an app for that!
Sorry, I couldn't resist.
-
I have now commented in a story thread. Bonus stories please!
-
Many stories have prompted thoughts that nearly compelled me to finally register and post; if nothing but to say "THAT WAS AMAZING!"
But lo, what finally did me in was the tantalizing promise of more stories. Are you happy now? I am.
I <3 Escape Artists.
-
I have been around for a long time, but I think this idea might have pushed me to actually comment on a story for the first time. Good thinking Dave!
-
Sign me up as well!
-
I <3 Escape Artists. The three pods keep my workday entertaining.
-
Hi! I commented on Eugene in Escape Pod. Is that enough?

Hi! I commented on Eugene in Escape Pod. Is that enough?
Absolutely!
And welcome!

Me too.... I never feel I actually have anything intelligent to add to the forum (And mostly I don't). But I'd love to have some extra escape pod. (Workday becomes less drab).

This is the most best thing EVAR.

Free stories. Sign me up.

So yeah, this list of authors has gotten pretty epic... and it was epic to begin with.

Would comment anyway, but sure, I'd like to get some more stories. Sign me up. :)
-
I want!, I want! more stories is the only thing that will lure me out of my lurking cave.
-
Oh man! Check out that author line-up! I want more stories, please <3

at work, can't post more now, just one review, but interested, thanks for doing this! ;D

I've been trying to get up the nerve to register and comment for a few weeks now. So this incentive is the perfect push I need! Thank you!

How come nothing says "forums" at the top?

How come nothing says "forums" at the top?
What do mean? If you're looking for the forum link on the podcast main page, its on the right if you scroll down a bit.

I didn't find the forums easily.

I didn't find the forums easily.
I see what you mean. I do think it would be a good idea if they moved the forums link to the top of the page.
-
Welcome to all these new folks! Hope you like it here.
-
Its too bad these exclusive stories will also be rare. (I'm burning and hiding some copies). It looks like 30 or so people (I'm being opto-mystic) will hear these stories, some of them by fantastic authors. So we'll have these great stories, and only the 30 of us that listened to the aftershow, and figured out how to meet the conditions, get them.
What a waste.
-

WOOHOO! This is awesome. I know i've commented on stories before, and now I found this. ROCK! You guys are awesome!

So, you signed up to the forum to get the stories, but complain it's a waste? Odd. They won't be wasted on me.
-
Made a couple of posts, one on a story and one criticism (it is kinda harsh, but I hope it is taken in a constructive light, not attacking anyone, I promise!).
Thanks to all at EA for putting out such great and entertaining stories. Looking forward to the extra stories!
And now I am off to find the donate button!
-
I certainly hope I qualify for the free stories. I've been on these forums long enough. ;D
-
So I thought I'd come out of my anonymous cave to see about getting some exclusive stor - ARRRG! THE LIGHT OF DAY!!! THE FLESH IT BURNS!!! - Whew, back to safety. Curse you Dave and your exclusive stories!
-
I'd definitely love to hear the exclusives!
-
i would love to get the bonus content - and thank you for persuading me to post...
-
Yes please. I love Escape Artists and should have posted long before today.
-
MORE free stories from the Escape Artists? Oh well, if you insist, I guess I can take 'em off your hands.
You are all ridiculously awesome. Thank you so much for the hours of wonder and amazement you've given me.
-
Stories Please!
-
I have listened to all three escape artists podcast for a while. I enjoy listening to the feedback at the end of the podcast, but never came here before now. The offer of more stories was just enough of a push to get me to join. Keep the great tales coming.
-
Please Sir, May I have some Mur?
-
i DO love escape artists!!
;D

fantastic idea, im looking forward to next month :))
-
Ibid... Stories please!

Looking forward to hearing the stories!

These stories better be at least as good as the non-exclusive ones. Or I'll sue my clone. ;D
-
Me too.... I never feel I actually have anything intelligent to add to the forum (And mostly I don't). But I'd love to have some extra escape pod. (Workday becomes less drab).
If I waited until I had soemthing intelligent to say I would never say anything at all here... or anywhere else for that matter.
-
Hey, I'm just here for the stories, guys. I'm not much on making intelligent statements about them, and I really suck at analyzing things, but I loves me some stories.
-
Gonna comment here, just in case, as the outro line has shifted away from "send me a PM" and I don't want to get left off the story wagon (left behind by the story bus? Thrown out of the story airplane?) due to a clerical error.
-

Expunged from the story record. Decimated from the story Roman army. Vomited up by the story giant shark. Flung from the story planet due to the sudden cessation of gravity.

yah stories

Yeah, I did end up switching it from "send a PM" to comment on this thread. But if anyone reading this has already sent me a PM, they don't need to comment here - unless they just want to join in the fun. But the PM will qualify you. Really, I'm going for the spirit of the law, as opposed to the letter.

1 Adult Ticket Please.
Thanks.
This is the best prize I've ever got for doing something I enjoy already.

Y'know, I only post on the forums now and then: usually when a particular story really tweaks my brain in just the right way. I tried, for a while, to post every week to every new Escape Pod, Pseudopod, and Pod Castle story that came down the feed but -well- it felt forced.
But over the years, between my posts on my LJ and my raving to friends, I think I've built up quite a few missives on the various 'Pods.
Looking back on all the fantastic tales I've listened to, here, I think I know my favorites:
EP038: L'Alchimista
EP046: Natural Order
EP123: Niels Bohr and the Sleeping Dane
EP146: Edward Bear and the Very Long Walk
EP184: As Dry Leaves That Before the Wild Hurricane Fly
PP094: The Skull-Faced Boy
PP100: The Music of Erich Zann
PP129: Bottle Babies
PP152: Hometown Horrible
PP178: The Tamga
PC003: Run of the Fiery Horse
PC008: The Osteomancer's Son
PC060: The Evolution of Trickster Stories Among the Dogs of North Park After the Change
PC062: The Fiddler of Bayou Teche
PC086: Tio Gilberto and the Twenty-Seven Ghosts
It's hard to say, really, since I find it very difficult to choose. But, again and again, these are the tales I come back to and listen to again and again.
Yours,
Sylvan (Dave)

I'm glad that I heard about this offer. It has prompted me to finally jump in the pool and make a comment on my first story (Black Feather). BTW...I still have Sean Connery burned on my retinas; I'm not sure it will go away on its own.
-
My first comment on a story was pretty lame, though I promise to do better. I'm at work though and didn't want to forget so figured I'd start out with a small one.
This got me to sign up here, so your evil plot worked.
I love the podcasts btw. So far I've mostly been listening to Pod Castle, but I've started on Escape Pod now that I've listened to everything I could get in iTunes.
-
A fantastic idea! Looking forward to all the stories. :D
-
Thank for the extra stories, starting in July I usually let the Pseudopods build up and listen to them in a pre Halloween marathon.
-
Oooh, the best part of Halloween is story time! Sign me up for more stories!
-
Gotta say, this is what made me finally sign up to the forum, and I'm glad I have.
-
I've been way behind listening to the podcasts, but I finally caught up (and just in time!). I've only posted once so far but please may I have more stories?
-
WANT.
-
I just joined and posted.... really looking forward to some AWESOME fiction :-D!!! I've been listening to Escape Pod (and Pseudopod and Podcastle) as long as i can remember them being around.... I always look forward to the new episodes. Keep up the great stories!
-
Your awesomeness knows no bounds! I was wondering though if Steve has written anything lately? Not to say you all sit in high-backed leather chairs enjoying high tea together but over all i would really like for one of the exclusives to be by him. May just be wishful thinking. also i had a though that maybe with Norm helping out over there from time to time that maybe you (Dave), Rachel, Ben, Mur, Alisdare, and our other hosts would be willing to each do a drabble and post it like a flash special? just an idea. thanx for listening. . . Or reading in this case!

Just what I needed to get on here and post something.

I'm by nature a lurker, and due to my erratic listening schedule I live in constant fear of committing thread necromancy... but may I sign up as well?

Reach not beyond the borders of life, or the Wardens will come to cut off your head...
-
Okay, so my 2nd post on the forum is to ask for free stuff, but hey... gotta do what ya gotta do, right? I'll sign on the dotted line, once I quit blinking to erase the S. Connery image. I'll never look at him the same way again!
It's easier to ask forgiveness, than permission

Thread necromancy is perfectly fine, despite the red warning text. In fact, when for a story comments thread, it is heartily encouraged. The only thing that is frowned upon is digging up an old religion vs. science debate (or something like that) and trying to light a spark under it.

Tell that to the Wardens. They're a bunch of jerks.

Who let Electric Paladin out of the dungeon and gave him his head back? Somebody call the man with the axe...

What a great idea to get people more involved in the forums! I would like to gin in on this exclusive content and will make sure to begin reading and posting!
I <3 Escape Artists !!!!
Thanks everybody at Escape Artists for putting on such a great show, week in and week out. And thanks Steve E. for staring it all. We miss you man!!

I can confirm this. If the punishment for thread necromancy were beheading, then I would have, oh, negative several-hundred heads by now. And, then I'd be roaming the countryside looking for heads to take from other people. Judging by the lack of headless people in Minnesota's countryside, I think you're safe.
-
I don't post often, especially now that we can't post directly on the blogs, but I'm definitely interested in more stories!

Am I the only person on this thread to have read any Dresden Files? Jeez...
-
I'd like to be in on this too, please! :)
-
Not sure if I've ever successfully posted anything here. God knows I've tried, anyway. Stories, please?

Great idea! Sign me up please!

I have not read any Dresden Files. Why, do they reveal headless hordes in the Minnesota countryside?
-
On my to-do list all this week: "Comment on a story and the I <3 Escape Artists Thread before the 30th!" Except, I'm really, really good at forgetting my to-do lists even exists. So it was a relief to hear that we had a little longer to post. Look at me go, posting, um, early in the late batch?
-

No, but there is a zombie dinosaur at one point.
-
SRSLY?
I really need to give those books another shot sometime. (In my infinite amount of free-reading time...)
-
Yeah you do. Don't be put off by the first book in the series - I was, at first. They get much better, and then they get awesome. :) (although I confess Butcher still has writing quirks that irritate me. I am willing to forgive them though because I love the series).
-
Took me a while to get to this cause I'm always in the car when I hear the notice, and then forget by the time I'm back in front of my computer.
So I finally made a post (http://forum.escapeartists.net/index.php?topic=4411.msg79470#msg79470) and would love to get more stories to listen to during my commute.

I have this problem with a few of the podcasts I listen to. Probably just as well, though, or I'd never get anything done. :D

I think it takes about three books for him to hit his stride. But yeah, then they do get awesome!!
-
I like books 2-4, despite the Susan. Then books 5-6 have entire too goddamn much Susan and Susan-related nonsense in them. Then book 7 picks up again.
I really, really hate Susan.
-
very glad I got caught up on podcastle in time for this; yes please, extra stories please and thanks so much!
-
I would love to have some extra stories for the winter season!
I hope this isn't too much procrastination to qualify - I have been subscribing to Escape Pod via PayPal since the second time I listened if that counts!

If you cross a line, the wizard secret police show up and chop off your head. No trial. No second chances (usually).
And I kinda like Susan.
And yeah, Butcher's got some quirks. Subconscious Harry never really did it for me, and the use of the "[BODY PART OR OBJECT] of [SUPERLATIVE] [COLOR OR MATERIAL]" construction (ie. eyes of the palest blue, coat of the finest silk, etc.) - as opposed to the more straightforward "[SUPERLATIVE] [COLOR OR MATERIAL] [BODY PART OR OBJECT] (ie. deeply blue eyes, fine silk coat, etc) - kind of annoys me. Actually, a lot of annoys me. But I like everything else.
Polka will never die.

Hi I have never posted before pls excuse my lack of skill.
The offer to have 14 exclusive stories is to much temptation for me not to try.
Pls advise me if this post about the best stories and the best hosts is enough.
You guys rock/ and cast the spell of imagination. May the muses always smile upon your team

Thank you for the offer of extra PseudoEscapeCastle stories. It has inspired me to forum-ulate an account and join the fun. Do the folks at Podcastle have a special "spell" checker for this fourm?

Well, I did it. I signed up and became a forum member. Dave, thanks for extending the deadline. I've been so busy with my new business, that late in the day, the last thing I want to do is one more computer task. With the extension, I knew I either had to sign up or quit hoping I would.
I'm really looking forward to extra stories. A big thanks to you (plural) for writing them, reading them, getting them ready, and sending them out.
Sincerely,
Marc

Okay, fairly lame that I've been lurking here for lo these many moons and am making my first post in the "gimme freebies" thread. But here I am...
-
Oh! Crud! Am I too late? I'd like the stories as well, please...
-
Not too late - I extended the deadline until Oct. 8. Hrm...now can't remember if I updated the original post, though. Gonna go check...

Welcome! To get in on the promotion, I think you need to leave one more comment--a comment in one of the story threads. It doesn't have to be profound or anything, just say what you thought of any story you've heard on the podcasts.
-
Dave,
I think this is an awesome idea, and it worked to get me onto the forums. What an excellent place you have here.

I would surely love to receive some excellent and exclusive stories....so much so that I actually commented after years and years of being a loyal listener.
And now...back to the shadows again!

Ahem. I'll, um, have to go back and check tonight. Maybe I did say the 10th? ???

Hey, thanks for saying so, Tim. Hope you really enjoy the forum and the extra stories!
-
Free Stuff? I'm there. I already hate waiting for new episodes of the three podcasts each week, so extra stories would be awesome.
-
/me peers over lurking wall and blinks.
Please sir, can I have some more (stories)?
-
Yay! Stories, please!
-
Cant say no to free stories :)
-
I'm in for extra free stories! woot!
-
Well I will admit this incentive was effective in getting me to visit the forums. I have been listening for a number of years, but have never posted, but here I am, hungry for more stories, and making comments on some I have already heard.
Good job getting the shy girl out of her shell.

Me too! Sigh. I'm afraid I'm not going to be regular - work and such like keeps me busy - but I love stories. Of course - we're all here for that.
Thanks for the stories - I appreciate the work Escape Artists does, and I'm happy to support you in that (financially and otherwise.)
-
Yes please, please please
I joined the forum in 2008 and only posted now, but think I have been listening since around 07
so long time lurking ;)
-
Please add me. I love the podcast - it makes me think! 8)

After struggling to register because someone had already stolen my username, I discovered that the knave in question was a younger me. I really must visit more often.
Edit: Actually, I have just registered this account. I probably hit submit on that twice or something. Glad to know that my youth wasn't so misspent as to steal my own forum accounts...
-
Hey all, just a little note to say I'm totally overwhelmed (in a good way) with people's responses to this. Thanks so much!
Also - remember, if you've only commented here, please do comment on a story thread elsewhere.
Thanks again, and really looking forward to sharing all these stories with you all!
-Dave
-
I can haz stories?
Also, this exact same thing happened to me: (pretty sure i didn't hit submit twice or anything like that)

More stories please, Sir.
Whaaat?!?!?
More stories please, Sir.
You can't have more stories unless you've listened to your backlog.
But please, Sir, I am sure these stories shall be quite wonderful and I promise I will listen to my backlog and comment on each and every one of them!
PS Thanks, Dave!

Hm, that might be related to the messages I get on and off that tell me that I already wrote a particular post--they're harmless but annoying. Maybe this echo is another symptom?
-
When I heard the list of people contributing I HAD to get in on it! Especially the Escape Artist staff! I can't wait to hear to hear what's in your heads.
Thank you all for doing this, and for extending it to this week!
-
I admit it, I posted purely for the stories...but hey I want my fix just like everyone else! Thanks Dave
-
I just realized today that I never put up my post in this thread to get in on the bonus stuff. I had been meaning to get into these forums for ages now but it took a good kick in the ass from Dave to get me here. So thanks for kicking me with extra content!
-
I would love to get these stories, what a great promotional idea. Thank you!
-
I love this idea, Now that saving for the wedding is done I can look at getting a decent Mic and hopefully record some stuff you guys ;)
Keep up the good work and here's to many more storys

Wow, free stories are a good incentive! I've been listening to Escape Pod for several years and somehow managed to register on the forums and make exactly 0 posts some time ago, but now you've got me posting. As a start, I commented on Ted Chiang's _exhalation_, which is one of my all time favorite Escape Pod stories. I've cut-and-pasted that comment below as well, and I promise I'll try to at least spend some time on the forums now and then. So, can I please, please, please have some more free stories to love?
-----And here's my original post-----
Greetings all,
I'm very late to the game here and basically writing because I want to get some more free fiction, but hopefully I'll try and become a bit involved in the forums. I'm posting on this story since this is still one of my favorite Escape Pod stories and one that I push on innocent bystanders every chance I get.
I occasionally teach an undergraduate course on cognitive science at a school in upstate New York. The last time I taught the course I added a set of readings I called "cognitive science fiction." Basically, for each week's topic I assigned a technical reading covering the research into the field and also an optional fun reading, a piece of science fiction that delved into the issue from a literary perspective. We read some of Stanislaw Lem's Cyberiad, some Asimov robot stories, some William Gibson and also some not-quite science fiction like Borges and Julio Cortazar. I also included some Escape Pod stories that were relevant to various topics.
Ted Chiang's _Exhalation_ went with a section on dynamic systems and cognition. Even after all my lectures on the neuroscience of the mind and the scientific data on how thought is represented in human brains (and other systems), I had a couple students tell me that the passage on the dissection and the description of air moving the gold foil leaves was when they finally "got" what I had been going on about all semester. I also had several students tell me this was one of the best readings in the class and that they were hooked on Escape Pod as a result.
So, thank you Ted Chiang for teaching my students what I could not, and thank you Escape Pod for bringing it to me! I haven't been vocal, but I have loved you from afar.
-
i <3 escape artist. can i have totally awesome free fiction sent directly to me via email too?
-
I've been listening for a long time, I have no idea why I haven't been posting more, I always seem to have something to say.
Nice incentive to get me to post.
-
As above, long time listener, first time poster!
-
Wow, awesome! They're really crawling out of the woodwork.
(Ummm... I mean that in a GOOD kind of a way) :-)
-
I'd love the stories. How do I get them?
-
Thank you for extending the sign up time.
-
i <3 escape artist!
Hope it's not too late to sign-up for the stories.
-
I [heart] escape artist, too. Listen to EscapePod and PodCastle. Awesome.

Nope, not too late yet!
-
WooHoo more stories sign me up please
-
Well DKT, you plot worked. I have listened to Escape Pod starting with episode 5, and have followed all the Escape Artists podcasts since. But until now I have never joined your forum. Now I have for the exclusive stories.
Thanks.
-
I'd love some stories :)
-
ahh! almost too late :O
now that Iv started school, I don't have time to read any more so escape artist pretty much provides all my literature, and what awesome stuff it is too.
I heart you all very much for keeping me in fiction. <3
-
I'd love some stories :)
Your avatar name makes me laugh. :)
-
I've been listening for a year or so, but made very few posts. I promise I'll post more if I can have some scrummy new stories. ;D

Oh Oh Oh m3 tooo!! me too!! I've been listening to the "pods" since oh around EP 16 (one of my top 10 fav) We miss you Steve!! <3

/hears announcement on today's Escape Pod, rushes in...
*puff* *puff* I got here as soon as I could! Thanks, Escape Pod, for making my morning commute bearable!!!
-
I've been a long time listener, but hadn't posted on the forums in years, so this was a good reminder. I love the variety of great stories Escape Artists puts out. Thanks so much!
-
Very difficult for a lurker like myself to actually add to a forum...but more stories...yes & please
-
I love the Escape Artists podcasts and would love to get some extra free fiction!
- Skimble
-
May I please have my stories? I'm an incorrigible lurker, but I promise I'll post when I'm strongly moved.
-
Weird thing, I haven't had a single post go through yet without giving me an error. I'm trying not to double-post though, as I think the posts are going through.
-
Ok, you made me sign up to get the stories! They are amazing to listen to as I work. Now that I'm here, I'll check it out. I definitely <3 Escape Artists!
-
I <3 free stuff.
-
Yay, count me in.
-
Hope it's not too late. I listen on my commute, so by the time I got to a computer I kept forgetting the name of the thread I was supposed to comment in!
-
I hope I can qualify for this! Been listening to Escapepod since the beginning but got out of the habit of commenting on stories when the forums were introduced. But, I think I've made a few comments here more recently. I want extra stories! If you'll give em to me!
Keep em coming!! It's so hard to get through the week once I have listened to releases, waiting for the next episode to come out!

Great idea! Love your podcasts. :)
-
I started listening to escapod around either episode 52 or 72, can't really remember. but it was after psuedopod got it's start. I started listening to psuedopod about 4 episodes before Alasdair took over the hosting duties. Started podcastle from day one. These are the only podcasts I ALWAYS keep current (and i listen to a lot of podcasts). I am a huge fan and tell people about these podcasts all the time, yet i hardly post in the forums. I will try to do better about that (don't hold yer breath, though).
looking forward to hearing more and getting those extras. ciao
-
I would like these stories please.
Thanks for all the great work you guys do.

Me too!!

Finally ... at long last .. despite note being able to long on since I apparently forgot my password .... and the "we'll send it to your email" page on EA Forums hasn't worked all week .... and for some reason I couldn't register again ... finally I'm here! Send me more free, NEW stories, please! And thanks for the wonderful stories I already enjoy, Escape Artists!
-
Thank you for extending this promotion! I'm a little behind in the feeds and was sad that I had missed it.
-
Sign me up!
-
Thanks you for Escape Artists! I'm looking forward to the bonus stories.
-
I would love to hear these stories!
-
Fine storycrafters, here in those last couple of hours (either that, or I'm a week late, not sure how behind I am with my listening), I've put up a comment, and I'd very much like to hear the extra stories mentioned in the podcasts for October.
Thank you for many many (many) fine commutes of listening.
-
I guess I missed the cutoff for this? I'd love some stories if I'm not quite too late.
Anyway:
Guh, ah well, them's the breaks for listening for a month of podcasts over the last few days, mournfully realizing I missed the "Before October" deadline, and missing the new deadline also since then.
Ah well.
Still, I love me some EscapePod and PseudoPod and PodCastle, you guys do good work, keep it up. (Someday I shall be solvent enough to send you some monies for your fine services of which I partake.)
(PS: I'd run around the forums commenting on stories that I've listened to, but sadly I am lagged THROUGH THE ROOF at the moment. Forgive me? I'll comment tommorrow, promise.)
-
If I didn't miss it, I'd like to get in on the bonus stories. :)
-
Nah, you folks are good. Thanks for signing up!
Will close the doors...soon.
Dave
-
Oh no! Am I too late? I thought the deadline for signing up was 10 October. I thought I was a day early, not a day late!
Any chance I could still be added to the list to get the free stories? Pretty please? With lots of sugar and ice-cream on top (Ben and Jerry's, or Hagen-Daaz, you're choice of course)
<why isn't there an emoticon for hopeful and pleading?>
-
Me, too, please.
-
If I'm not too late, I'd love to get those stories! (So many writers I love are on the list!)

+1
-
please pretty please. I'd love these stories too. ;D ;D
-
If I didn't miss the cut-off I'd love to get these too.
-
All of you with only one post, please go into a story thread and contribute! Trust me, your opinions will not be shot down in flames, unless they are flames themselves. We don't like fires here. I know you all have valid opinions on at least one of the wonderful stories you have heard on any of the three podcasts, so go make your voices be heard! We'd love to hear them!
and then you can have aaaaall the delicious stories your ears can hold.
-
Hey, if I'm not too late, I'd love to get the exclusive stories too.
-
Hey all, if you've posted a comment in this thread by now, you're on The List. Thanks!
I'm pretty gobsmacked by the response we've garnered for this thing, and I look forward to sharing all these stories with you, and reading all your comments.
I'm gonna go ahead and lock the thread just to make it a clear cut-off for everyone. I'll start up another thread in the next day or two with more details, including when the stories are going to go live, etc.
I would like to emphasize what Bdoomed said yesterday:

Thanks! And I'll talk to you all soon!
