Title: Fantasy Literature Poll - Elimination Group 4
Post by: Ocicat on September 09, 2010, 06:33:59 AM
Ahh, the tie, how we love thee.  Last week we had another tie for second place between Good Omens and Fritz Leiber's Lankhmar series.  They'll join the four(!) entries tied for second place from Elimination Group 1 in a runoff group next week.  Meanwhile, Gaiman's Neverwhere proceeds directly to the quarterfinals.

This is our last elimination group, and once again it's Gaiman heavy.  But we also have one of the oldest books in this poll (Le Mort d'Arthur) and the very newest (The City & the City).  Also the most famous tale from the author of Podcastle's inaugural episode.  Can any of them give Gaiman's stories a run for their money?  We'll see!

I forbore all other possible votes (and I liked all of these) to throw as much weight as possible behind "The Last Unicorn."  That book is one of the core threads that wove my foundation in speculative fiction in general.  I would lop off significant lumps of anatomy to be able to write like Peter S. Beagle.

(And the old cartoon movie from the 80s is a pretty decent rendition, too.)

Wow. Looks like Gaiman might not make the cut this time!
