Title: slaughterhouse 10
Post by: deflective on February 14, 2011, 07:58:12 AM
polls are polite, surveys are impersonal.  pseudopod deserves a slaughterhouse.*

kill off the stories that don't deserve to live so you can feed them to your favourites.  or maybe you just want to destroy something beautiful.

once a day, remove a point from one 2010 story and give it to another.  if a story drops to zero it is dead,** crushed prose paves the path for the ultimate champion.

trash talk is encouraged and hopefully the moderators will give us a little leeway if people want to enthusiastically support their opinions.

*  this is not official in any way.  it's just a way to talk about pseudopod while we wait for that which can eternal lie.
**no afterlife, resurrection (by any means), or undead will be tolerated.

Well I don't know where your starting numbers came from, but okay, I'll play.

I'd like to drown About 77 Degrees, West of Nassau and feed it's dead body to the Aztec God in The Blessed Days.

I mourn the early loss of Gretel just a bit, although she wasn't the love of my life or anything.

[-1] to "Eye Spy"

[+1] to "Fading Light"

Might as well kill off the weak while we can.

i think wendigo actually wanted to be fed to another story, the hand you're dealt would have assimilated it nicely

Yeah, we can graft "Wendigo" onto "Hand"'s nutsac or something  ;D

"Acceptable Losses" squandered the chance to explore true, personal horror by introducing a ridiculous amorphous blob to hammer us with a moral conundrum none of us will ever face.

[-1]

"The Tamga" deserves more credit. A classic tale of what happens in the corners of the world in communities small and far away, where magic and gods and demons still exist. Plus -- Cheyenne Wright!!

As it is now past midnight, which seemed to be the turnover point before, I'm going to cast my second vote.

I believe that Tim Pratt's Gulls are prone to flying too high [-1] and shall be consumed by The Horror of the Heights [+1].

bed of scorpions was one of the few pseudopod stories i actively disliked last year, there's some satisfaction in killing it off.  set down this gets the point, it's performing much better than i expected it to.

a point is taken away from the radejastians (interesting premise but ultimately forgetable execution) and given to the nimble men (wasn't sure where to put the point but the simple, character driven ghost story appeals to me).

after the last day:

[ 6] Acceptable Losses by Simon Wood (191)

Well if things keep going this way, I think we can finish off killing or promoting all the 1's today and get into the real point of this game.

I'll break up the Broken Bough [-1] and put it into building Ankor Sabat[+1].  I don't love Ankor Sabat, but I like it enough I don't want to see it die in the first round.  Although I'll probably be the one to kill it off later.

I would like to remove people oozing blood because of trans-dream-cycle-dimensional parasites in Blessed Days [-1] and add it to being rendered down completely into ooze by trans-dimensional predators in Fading Light [+1].

As you've moved to the taint from the nutsack, may I extrapolate that the story you feed to Hand tomorrow shall be grafted onto its asshole?

I like the pattern.

OK. Not sure I'm allowed to do this, but I'd like to save Corvus Curse from an early demise by giving it +1, to the detriment of Wearing The Dead.

there were a couple stories i was sorry to see go but i expect the high mortality to continue for several more days until we winnow it down to a dozen or so.

i knock off the snow-white heart (don't remember the story) in favour of acceptable losses (i spent a lot of time picking apart its logic but, in this case, that just means i thought it was worth spending time on).

knocked one off of the evil-eater (generally passable story, just not best-of material) in favour of oil of dog (there's something about the story having a little age to it that makes it so much better).

I'd like to knock off The Moon and the Mesa today. [-1]
And we'll put the point onto Papa was a Gypsy [+1]

I must admit, I don't really see the point of buffing up all the current leaders with this many stories still in the field.  I love Oil of Dog, for example.  I think it might be the one I want to win.  But it is currently up with the leaders.  So I look to knock off the weak and vulnerable, and protect the more vulnerable ones that I enjoyed.

I may prefer Oil of Dog to Papa was a Gypsy, but I do love a good murder chain-reaction and I like Papa so much more than the other currently 2-point stories.  So I'd rather the finals be all stories I at least liked.

I believe Papa Was a Gypsy should have gotten +2 rather than +1, putting it at 5 points.

Also wow, why all the hate on Set Down This.  Calling it pointless seems a bit harsh, considering how much interesting discussion there was about it.  With 5 pages of discussion, I don't see how it can be uninteresting.  Now maybe that turns out to not be award-worthy, but you guys seem to have it in for this one hardcore.  I don't know that I actually loved the story, but it is one of those ones I've found myself thinking about day after day and I really think there is a lot to it.  That said, I don't like defending leaders this early in with this type of a game.

Sorry Horror of the Heights, I have to pull a Batman at this point: I won't kill you, but I'm not going to save you either.

aye, the math works out.  fonts don't transfer with cut/paste so i've cleaned up the list to make it easier to track, anybody that wants additional story information can find it in the first post.

i had originally wanted to take the point from the horror of the heights and give it to oil of dog, these two stories serve as an excellent example of the difference between speculative fiction that ties itself to a particular moment in time (the early age of flight) and specfic that remains fresh a century after it's written.

but it looks like a little work's needed to keep set down this alive for the top ten and it's worth it.  the footage coming out of egypt & bahrain makes it more relevant than ever and i don't want to see a story generally popular in nominations die early because of a vocal minority.

what this is about is whatever you make it about.
if you want to be a vocal minority and feed one pet story then no one's saying you're wrong to do it, but other people may make this about stopping you.

The Dark Level is the scariest tale of Man's search for Parking that I've ever heard, I was about to give it some love myself, just for solidarity, but I'm worried about the top pulling too far ahead of the pack as I keep focusing on the bottom.  Maybe tomorrow.

[+1] Papa Was a Gypsy, the best Southern Gothic Horror since Pigeons From Hell.

And I'll counteract some of the top-end boosterism I've been complaining about here:
[-1] The Nimble Men to level off the top (I prefer Acceptable Losses, I don't hate Nimble Men, but I don't think it needs to be significantly out front).

Note to whoever chooses stories: podcasting Pigeons From Hell would be a great 300th episode special.  Ideally with Ben Phillips' lovely accented reading from Gypsy and Ol. can. [/sucking up]

For the record, I don't really care if "The Hand You're Dealt" wins (although I thought it was a kick-ass story). I just want to see it outlive "Set Down This". Once that's done, I'm out.
Title: Re: slaughterhouse 10

Well, personally I think that "The hand your dealt" deserves to outlive quite a lot of the stories on this list, but I don't think it should win, and I feel it's benefitting inordinantly from your campaign against "Set this down". Hence, I'm shaving off some of its points.

For the record, I'm really tempted to help kill "Set this down" just because I'm tired of the back-and-forth about it, but I didn't listen to it and I therefore don't want to vote (+ or -) for it.

The Hand You're Dealt was good but not better than (most of?) the stories I've given points to. I just don't want to see it get disproportionately far ahead of the pack.

I was not moved much by Set Down This, but I also didn't have as visceral a negative reaction to it as some. I'll dock it points for stories that I think are more worthy and representative of what makes PseudoPod awesome. I'd be happy with just about any of the current pack leaders winning.

I'm also not adding or removing points from anything I haven't listened to yet. My listening is very intermittent, as it gets focused around long bouts of watching cars or road trips. The short story format works so much better with the method and time I have available to consume audio fiction.

I need to finish relistening to one last story so I can vote in the second poll. I like how this thread has received a lot of the debate that might have shown up in the poll threads.

polls don't create discussion (take a look at last year), that's why slaughterhouse is here.

all of my voting so far has been oriented towards making sure we have a winner in the next couple months.  if things begin to look like they're dragging out we can decide if we want the bottom stories to automatically lose a point each day.

i'm not too concerned about stories getting voted higher than their popularity deserves since it's just a matter of time before they're torn down, but i am trying to keep the four stories that were popular during nominations alive until the top ten.

another -1 for the blessed days and +1 for set down this.  just a safety buffer, we've seen how quickly it can drop.

i'm sorry to see the getalong gang die, the story has a second layer that went largely unappreciated.  sure we have the crazy guy going through life in quiet hell but, on the other side, his wife and son are living with the belief that they have his love and can make him happy.  this is a horror common to the human condition, no matter how close and important somebody is to you it's impossible to actually know what you mean to them.

you might be going through life in an elaborate ruse that could blow up at any minute.  or you might never find out, dieing without knowing your entire life was a sham.

[-1] Papa Was a Gypsy
[+1] Nimble Men

Nimble Men was more internally consistent and had fewer flaws. It was stronger by hiding details and giving us just enough of a glimpse. In Papa - why did she have to kill her little brother? Why did she wander around for quite some time after being impaled through-and-through by a thrown sharpened stick? So I'm going to have to keep Nimble Men above Papa.
Title: Re: slaughterhouse 10

[-1] The Dreaming Way
[+1] Papa Was a Gypsy

I like The Nimble Men too, so I don't want the points to come from there.  The Dreaming Way didn't really impress me though.  Both Papa Was a Gypsy and Nimble Men I found to actually be scary.  And Oil of Dog is probably my favorite, for what that is worth.

Now let me defend Papa for a moment:
She absolutely didn't have to kill her brother, there was no reason for it.  That was kind of the point, to my reading.  She killed him because she was completely out of control and was making increasingly less justified decisions and hurting even the things she loved for no good reason.  Also, the main character didn't get impaled by a sharpened stick.  It was the Grandmother, she died (we thought) and then wasn't dead due to being evil and magical and diabolical and whatnot.  The whole thing was a sort of Xanatos Gambit by Grandma.

Here is a bit of a thing I wrote after first listening:
You're never sure how in-control Elma really is, until the end, but you can vaguely feel her slipping, especially any of her thoughts involving power. I like all the ghosts, and the seeming ghostly chain-reaction, set off by Mama at the beginning, where Elma is increasingly more and more haunted. You really get a feel for everything spiraling out of control.  ... Celebi has created a great (if hard to understand motivationally) villain by the end of the story, and the smaller ghost and charm level supernatural elements were entirely necessary. But why not leave it at that, with the possibility of interpreting the whole things as psychosis + superstition, rather than firmly committing to the supernatural?

That said, the ending is actually pretty good, Elma's emotions are perfectly described, you really feel for her, and the final line about love is great. Overall, Elma is an extremely well-drawn character, and the Southern Gothic setting is pretty well done too. I just wish we'd learned a bit more about Regina.

[-1] Her Collection of Intimacy
[+1] Set Down This

I can't let that whole campaign be over, I do like this story.  Not so much for Intimacy.

I also want to defend Papa, but I'll take the one that is behind for now.

I also found Dark Level to be an effective story, but it falls apart too much on second listening, what with the footsteps and the nonsensical and over-the-top foreshadowing and the 80's horror flick scream.  So that is another one I'm not going to save, but I can't stand to be the one to kill.

Not to be a jerk Fenrix, but where do we draw the line between listener comprehension and good/bad writing?  I just re-listened to that scene, and I don't really see how you could have come up with the MC being stabbed.  I believe you, I just find it a really strange misinterpretation to have had.  Once again, not trying to be an ass about this, but did you listen to the story while driving?

the hand you're dealt loses a point to the nimble men.

my attempt to keep the original top four stories alive for our top ten has failed.  there are probably two main reasons for this.  first, 90% of our voting has come from half a dozen people so our tastes are strongly represented.  second (and more interestingly), polls and nominations do not allow people to vote against stories so controversial stories have a much rougher time in slaughterhouse.

i can't keep spirit of nationalism alive for the top ten but i can let it be (tied for) first runner up.  i was hoping that all three war stories would survive since they represent their time periods well (traditional ghost story for napoleonic times, oldschool scifi during wwii, and free form, almost plotless, representation of modern warfare).  it would have been interesting to choose between them.

gentlemen, our top ten:

[-1] Set Down This (for stePH)
[+1] The Dreaming Way

With regards to Papa Was a Gypsy, I take no umbrage to your criticism. I'll stand by my comment of the action scenes needing more oomph. If I listened to it more than once and I drifted off both times, the action scenes aren't capturing me.

I think it's worthy of inclusion in this final/top ten list. I thought enough of it to listen to it more than once. However, I don't think it is strong enough to be in the top five.

Jim Biyeh's work is great, and I think The Dreaming Way is the best of the three published in PseudoPod. I recall the comments for his stories trending strongly positive. But the active poll players/responders don't reflect that lveel of appreciation. This is a hill worth defending.

Fair enough.

We all seem to have our favorites.  Honestly, at this point it looks like my preferences are doing fairly well, with the exception of my poor, deceased Blessed Days.  It is too bad more people aren't playing, I suspect the winner of this will be all of our consensus third place or so.

Or the consensus will line up with the poll (at least where it stands now) and give us Oil of Dog, Acceptable Losses, and The Nimble Men as the top three.

both set down this and is this a horror story? have been eliminated now.  these are another two stories that i wish came head-to-head at some point.  they had a lot of similarities, both works were almost plotless and focused on exposing the reader to the reality of horror instead of creating something new.  is this a horror story? was a lot shorter tho.

It pains me to not support her collection of intimacy, but I figure either Deflective will give it its point back, or else there will finally be a gap between the lowest two stories. Either way, I get something I want, and this way I can start helping Oil of Dog get its rightful victory over the perfectly decent but unspectacular Nimble Men.

so, i've been trying to decide who to throw my support behind, oil of dog or the nimble men.  i liked the story oil of dog better, but is it fair to support a story by Ambrose Bierce in a smaller venue?  ultimately the decision was simple, this is slaughterhouse and, whatever the source, stories stand on their own merits.

the nimble men was particularly enjoyable because it spent time simply getting to know the characters.  in short stories we usually speed along, jumping right into the plot because there's only so much space to play with.  it was nice to spend a page or two getting to know the players before they were thrown into the mix.

the final rankings seems pretty obvious now, but maybe there's a voting block out there just biding their time for the final sprint.

Just for the principle.  Jeez I slack off or a couple days and Nimble Men gets no respect.  The Slaughterhouse is definately a game of endurance.  You have to be pretty diligent.

I'm out. I'm happy with whichever of these win. Nimble Men is a classicly inspired ghost story with compelling characters. Oil of Dog definately bowled me over, and has me looking for a reasonable priced collection of Bierce.

guys?  guys?!  fine, just leave me here to do the work...

if no one takes up the cause of the nimble men today i'm going to declare oil of dog the winner.  people will have a few days to contest it but i don't see any reason to drag the gruesome details out over a week.

I'd be fine with that. PseudoPod succeeded in making me break down and buy the full collection of Ambrose Bierce short stories.

That "Set Down This" is on the list at all, invalidates the whole thing.

Use caution. That face has some extra body parts grafted to it.

dude, seriously, we all get that you didn't like this story. but this whole thing was a quasi-democratic process. clearly of the people playing, enough of them thought 'Set This Down' was a good enough story for it to end up in the top ten. Your vehement dislike for it does not make the entire process invalid. No-one didn't ask for your top ten, the point was for the community (or a small portion of it, anyway) to decide the top ten in a slightly different way than simply voting for favourite stories. You're well within your rights to disagree, i personally would have liked to have seen Spirit of Nationalism up there because I loved that story, but I'm not saying that its absence invalidated the process.

Fiction is personal and individual; what one person likes, other people will hate. Please accept this and stop acting like a child. Your opinion is not fact, you have every right to dislike something, but you cannot say that a quasi-democratic process is invalid because the majority of people taking part in that process disagree with your opinion.

for the record, I didn't take part because I was still working through the archive for 2010, so I hadn't listened to all the stories on the list. I didn't take part in nominating for the polls either for the same reason.

That's your call. When I made my nominations I was about 75% complete on 2010, but I had heard enough stories to pick the three best of those I also hadn't consumed all the stories on the slaughterhouse list, I just avoided making moves for or against stories that I hadn't listened to. Also, the "best of" lists helped me to focus what to move up in my queue.
