I wanted to say that I like the format of this book review. I think it fits well into the style of PodCastle.

This review definitely made me want to read Throne of the Crescent Moon! Though I'm a little gun-shy with debut novels right now, having just been burned by a debut novel by a different author...

My curiosity is piqued...both for this book and the one referenced by Devoted135...

haha, sorry! Burned is probably a bit strong, but I posted my thoughts in the "what are you reading" thread :)

I read this book a while ago and really, really enjoyed it. One element that I found interesting was, at least for me, an undercurrent of true horror, which isn't something I find all that often in my fantasy novels. There was one particularly nightmarish scene that I'm still shuddering about months later.  (Not saying it's like a horror novel, not at all, just that it has horrific elements. By and large it's a good old swashbuckling adventure).

This sounds interesting, as interesting as such a high-level description can probably make it sound.  To make we really want to buy it, reading an excerpt would be more effective (wouldn't need to have the same production quality as a feature episode).  I have mixed reactions to Saladin Ahmed stories, some I really like others I don't care for.

You can read an excerpt here (http://www.saladinahmed.com/wordpress/2011/10/28/throne-of-the-crescent-moon-chapter-one/).

Cool.  Since this is a thread about the spotlight, I was trying to give feedback about the spotlight.  Since it's not fiction, I can't give the same kind of criticism that I could give for fiction.  The spotlight has a distinctly different purpose, which is presumably to make me want to lay down some of my money to buy the book.  For fiction I would comment about whether a story was effective at what it was trying to do, whether that was to make me laugh, to cry, to think, to love, etc....  In this case I commented about whether I thought the spotlight was effective at achieving the intended purpose that I perceived for it.

So that was what I was aiming for with me comment.  :)

Thanks for posting the link to the excerpt Dave! It made me even more interested, and of course all I could hear was Rajan Khanna's voice narrating in my head. Now I'm wondering how many books are planned for this series? Do we know?

Glad it helped :)

I'm pretty sure Saladin has mentioned somewhere that there will be at least three.

Ah, thanks for pointing that out, Talia. I missed the byline the first time.

Yeah, I don't have the link handy, but I remember io9 calling it the best Swashbuckling fantasy of the year thus far. That was earlier in the year, but it's nice to hear the opinion has somewhat stuck :)
