Title: Best. Episodes. Ever.
Post by: matweller on May 27, 2016, 05:58:31 PM
We're looking to set up a page on our website to give new audience members a starting point to listen to Escape Pod. We would like to list up to 10 episodes that are great stories and represent the show well. What episodes would you put on that list?

They Go Bump  is one of my top 3 favorites and I can never remember the names of the other two. http://escapepod.org/2013/02/06/ep382-they-go-bump/

I also really like Spar, but that may not be the best intro to EP.

Three that pop immediately to mind:

EJ-ES by Nancy Kress

The Man Who Lost the Sea by Theodore Sturgeon

Impossible Dreams by Tim Pratt

I'd second "They Go Bump". I'd also add:
"Trixie and the Pandas of Dread" for sheer silly funness
"Aftermaths"
"Subversion"
"In Copelius's Toyshop"
"Homegrown Tomatoes"
"Temporary Friends"
"Dead Merchandise"

EP214: Sinner, Baker, Fablist, Priest; Red Mask, Black Mask, Gentleman, Beast (http://escapepod.org/2009/09/03/ep214/)

EP490: Flowers for Algernon (http://escapepod.org/2015/04/20/ep490-flowers-for-algernon/)

Also the Union Dues. Hard to pick a favorite. Mine is probably "Freedom with a Small f" but I wouldn't recommend that as an entry point.

EP194: Exhalation (http://escapepod.org/2009/04/10/ep194-exhalation/) (This one is, hands down, my fave EP ever)

EP192: Sumo21 (http://escapepod.org/2009/03/28/ep192-sumo21/)

I second EP194: Exhalation as best ep ever (Ted Chaing is an amazing writer!)

Impossible Dreams by Tim Pratt is an absolute necessity, because I know how much love it gets around here.  And, well, Tim Pratt needs representation.

EP433: That Other Sea by William Ledbetter.  Great alien perspective episode.

EP339: “Run,” Bakri Says by Ferrett Steinmetz.  Total classic, with the only downside being that Edge of Tomorrow covered a lot of that ground in film version a few years after it "Run" came out

You need a silly / irreverent episode.  I nominate either
EP380 Punk Voyager by Shaenon Garrity or EP169: How I Mounted Goldie, Saved My Partner Lori, and Sniffed Out The People’s Justice by Jonathon Sullivan.

EP116: Ej-Es by Nancy Kress is also a wonderful suggestion

The Love Quest of Smidgen the Snack Cake

Yeah, I like all three, but I think Smidgen is probably the most playful without being off-putting to n00bs. But I may end up using Goldie as well. All good ideas!

IMO you need to have at least one of the Union Dues stories.... honestly, it might be nice to have a smattering of episodes from all the different hosts over the years. I think that might give a lot of new listeners a better idea of just how much and how influential Escape Pod has been.
