identify this story - IDENTIFIED.
« on: March 16, 2018, 12:03:43 AM »
I have a thirst to listen to an old story, but I can’t find it.  It’s memory is like a hangnail, rasping away at the corner of my mind. $10 bounty on it.

I’ve flipped through the Pseudopod archives, and either I’m looking right past it, or I’m looking in the wrong place.

Here’s the premise of the story (vaguely remember it being narrated by Alisdair Stuart, but I might be wrong)

Man driving in some grimy country.  (Seems Eastern European in my flaky memory)
He is stopped at checkpoint by the men in grey.
They search his car for some McGuffin, don’t find it.
Men in grey disassemble the car, down to the bolts.  no McGuffin.
The ominous men in grey search the driver, strip him,
They can’t find what they’re looking for,
things get weird
The searchers then search the searchers, disassembling everything they come across, including each other, because "they have to be certain."

IN closing…
1. the mighty Stephen Hawking was a f-ing quake master.  RIP.
2. Whoever remembers and has time to send me the answer gets a $10 PayPal bounty. Either straight to you for lending me your memory, or to Escape artists as a donation (I'll screenshot a receipt).

It was an early episode, I know that - maybe sometime in 2010 or before.

Also, there's a chance it wasn't us but CAST MACABRE.

Brilliant call - I did listen to CM back in the day, and have a few of their stories stored away as songs, especially "A lake of spaces" and "The path that does not stray".  Makes for fun music shuffle about twice a year.

You nailed it - about fifteen seconds in to Cast Macabre episode 42 (Big Inches, by Ralph Robert Moore), I knew it was the right one.  The link on CM is broken, but archive_org has a copy.
