I am grateful for this elegant and subtle story.  The author's creation of characters and places that are unfamiliar but easy to imagine gave me an opportunity to empathize with those who have served.  The characters are lovely: Aln Panette, Ordar Harvei, and scientists who can rely on captive audiences to listen to their papers at "horse races and concertos."  The magical survailence in their city and the city's ability to act gave me the feeling of a retired soldier struggling with restraint and peace of mind.  Luckily, I can only guess how acurately the author describes the veteran's state of mind.  In my opinion, she does so beautifully--which is apporpriate.
