The key turns in the lock and you step inside. Until you, we have been adrift in waiting, silence heavy in our bones. Time passes slowly inside these walls, dressed in our plastic coffins. Your sister follows you inside and looks around.

“This isn’t a good place,” she says.

She’s right, but you’ll chalk it up to the way Connie’s always existed partially in the real world, and part in another place where everything is gauzy and insubstantial. You don’t even hear her, but it would have served you better if you had.

Hindsight can be a real bitch sometimes.

I'd like to hear my options, so I could weigh them, what do you say?
Five pounds?  Six pounds? Seven pounds?

The basic injustice of such killings is hard to accept. This story seems to be, at heart, a rumination on that. I think many of us have had similar thoughts about this kind of situation... resentment at both the killer and who contributed to his mental state, and regrets about young lives cut short for no reason. Hearing about it from the point of view of the dead makes it still more troubling.

I'm still reeling from that ending.

I'm listening to this episode in small doses.  :o

I'm a stand-up philosopher until 2024. Then, I move onto my next gig. I'm a gentleman forester and farmer. I also enjoy jumping into Lake Huron and panicking the fish.

I enjoyed the narrator's unapologetic embrace of her undirected, unfair anger.  Even as she fades away, her "business" completed, she'd rather hold onto that hatred and anger than accept moving on to rest in peace.
