Either I added myself anonymously and missed it... or there's another Baltimorean in the house.

Oh, that was the other Salem, wasn't it? Hrm. Must be someone who didn't walk away from Omelas.

No, somebody's an even closer neighbor of mine than Ocicat.  He/she/it didn't identify on the map, though.

Yeah, there was also somebody in Michigan that put their entire street address but left out their name. It's weird what people think is private data and what isn't.

With a US street address you can go in to that county's website and get all kinds of information about that property, including owner's names, prior sales, building information, etc., and sometimes even a picture of the property.  It varies from county to county but most MN county's websites have this info.

You can do a lot with just a name and general area of location, as long as it's not John Smith. I've had to do lookups while I was doing an internship, and I've heard Private Eyes talk about what they can do. "Salem Oregon?"

That is what le Guin always says. "Omelas" was named after a sign for Salem, Oregon, as seen in her rear view mirror.

As an aside, am I the only one who thinks that those who walk away, leaving a small child to be tortured are no less evil for not benefiting from that torture? Surely the only moral choice is to stop the torture, thereby destroying Omelas, right?

Probably not.

... and would anybody care to tell me what story we're talking about here?  I've figured that it's by LeGuin, but what's the title?

I see that bolddeceiver is another almost-neighbor of mine, in Kirkland ... I lived there from around 1982 to 1987 (graduate of Juanita High School)  and later I worked there from 1999 to early 2006.

I see lowky is in Grand Canyon... we'll be visiting up there some time in June.  My greater familial unit is located in the Phoenix area, and we want the kids to get to see the big hole while we're back there to see them.

You can apparently set gender, so male(blue) and female(pink — I didn't pick the colorsnevermind it's red), however none of the girls have declared themselves as such for the maps. Yellow's someone who hasn't declared.

Heh.  Have you ever tried admitting to being a girl geek?  The best it gets you  is funny looks.  Speaking from experience, I don't recommend it.

OK, some half hour later...

The more I think about it, the more I realize that most intelligent women I know are pretty resistant to being grouped by gender alone.  I was actually mildly indignant at the categories available on the map.  What in heck does my gender have to do with liking speculative fiction???  How about, which of the podcasts do you listen to?  And what about the "super-intelligent version of red" which seems to be missing?

Or, the choices could be defaults, in which case I apologize for beating you up over them...

They were defaults, and by the time I noticed them people had already chosen some of them, so I figured to just let people choose for themselves and mess with it by adding in the nonsense categories. The 'Superintelligent Shade of Blue' is actually a reference to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so I'd take that up with Douglas Adams, who shouldn't be dead but is. It should be in no way construed as a gender reference, because it isn't.

Really, I don't think gender matters at all. It was a default, people chose it, or didn't chose it. We've discussed the whole gender in SF ball of wax extensively elsewhere, most recently in the fantasy women thread.

Anyway, welcome to the forum, don't feel the need to identify any more or less than you want to, and if you have any gender-related problems here, let one of the mods know and we'll look into it.

Proud girl geek right here! I'm the red dot by Chicago.  I've actually gotten some very positive reactions (among the funny looks).  I met my boyfriend in a bar where I overheard him discussing Joseph Campbell's influence on George Lucas in writing the Star Wars movies.  I went over to tell him that though Lucas had done well with the hero-myth structure, I found his characters and dialogue flat.  We've been together happily for more than two years.
I meet many of my geek friends in similar ways... never be afraid to admit it.  Geek girls are cool, and no one can convince me otherwise.
I've been wanting to put up a link to Ernie Cline for a while, and this is the best tie-in I've found yet... Check out "Nerd Porn Auteur" and "The Geek Wants Out."   http://www.ernestcline.com/spokenword/

GirlGeek here too! I met my guy online, in a MUD.

I really liked Mur Lafferty's t-shirt, which she wore in some of her episodes of This Day In Alternate History. It read "I LESS THAN THREE GEEKS". Cool!

Yes.  It is perfect music for walking my dogs in the snow on a quiet, freezing cold night.  I started as a fan of Sigur Ros and was referred to Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai.   Love it.

Cool, we've got a radio station in Austin that tries to play local bands as much as possible - it took me a while to get used to them, but I like them a lot now.
