It's the Penultimate Film Poll! Well not counting the finals I'll probably do in a few weeks.  Memento won last week by one vote over Rear Window.  This week we've got a Burton ghost story / gothic comedy, a new Victorian era movie about magicians that's kind of SF (does it qualify as Steampunk?), a classic SF kids movie, and an acknowledged classic of cinema in general.

Once again, I'm going by the "beloved movie from my childhood" criteria. Beetlejuice it is.

Prestige isn't steampunk, because it includes actual magic.

Even if the wizard is Tesla.

But, anyway. It's got to be Casablanca.

Really tough choice, liked all of them except for Beetlejuice.  Had to go with ET, it was my favorite movie as a kid and it really affected me at the time.   Gawd, I absolutely hated Beetlejuice but my wife likes so it is on our TV screen whenever one of the two hundred+ cable channels is showing it.  The star Betelgeuse is cool, though.  :)

Now that is genuinly unfair. Two Nolan movies in one poll...
Anyway, went with "The Prestige"

As much as I love Nolan's stuff, it came down to ET and Casablanca for me.  And then eventually down to Casablanca.

I don't think I would survive the night with my girlfriend if I didn't go for Casablanca, though I'd be making the same decision anyway.

I Twitter. I also occasionally blog on the Escape Pod blog, which if you're here you shouldn't have much trouble finding.

I think I've seen all of Casablanca but not in linear sequence from beginning to end (and certainly not in a single sitting).  So I don't know if I can claim to have watched it.

I went with Beetlejuice over Memento (my pick in the last poll) since I had more fun watching it, even though the ending was lame.

I will admit to having not watched Momento, so this was not a fully-informed vote, but the odds of anything displacing Casablanca in my personal all-time favorites list is so remote that I went ahead and voted for it anyway.

It was a tough call for me between Casablanca and E.T. I finally had to go with the senior of the two classics. I really enjoyed Beetlejuice and Memento (in that order). The Prestige was just okay for me. It seemed just a touch forced. The cinematography was beautiful.

Wow ... last week's winner doesn't have a single vote as I type this.

Rear Window got screwed — it's the only one I'd consider voting for over Casablanca.

Yeah, I'd have picked Rear Window over Casablanca. Eventually.

Still no votes for Memento.  Guess last week's draw turned out to be pretty weak...   ::)

I voted Beetlejuice largely on the nostalgia principle, but also because - I haven't managed to see Casablanca yet.  Really need to get around to that.  I've seen bits of it, of course, and it looks to deserve it's reputation.

Hmmph... so, you two anti-Rear Window voters spoiled it for this week, eh?  What is it with you Third Party voters?  ;)

I had to go with the Prestige, because I still haven't seen Memento, Casablanca left me feeling meh (admittedly, I was 14 when I saw it, and totally into Psycho), I *hated* Beetlejuice, and while I had a crush on Drew Barrymore then - which has never gone away - E.T. wasn't as much fun for me as it seemed to be for everyone else.  I was probably just mad because my bike wouldn't fly.

But Rear Window would have been an easy choice this week, as last....

Well someone finally voted for Memento anyway.   :D
