Hi everyone,

This is a game we play on fan forums for certain bands/singers, and I don't see why it shouldn't work here, if anyone is game.

Each book from a list of 20 top SF books (gained from the internet and not my actual opinion) begins with 5 points. Each turn you have to take one point from one book and add it onto another.

For example:

Book A (5)
Book B (5)

Next Poster:

Book A (4) -1
Book B (6) +1

If there's any book you think should be on the list, feel free to add it- this is a rough list.

And now:

Orson Scott Card Ender's Game  (5)
Frank Herbert Dune  (5)
Isaac Asimov Foundation  (5)
Douglas Adams Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy  (5)
George Orwell 1984  (5)
Robert A Heinlein Stranger in a Strange Land     (5)
Ray Bradbury Fahrenheit 451      (5)
Arthur C Clarke 2001: A Space Odyssey    (5)
Isaac Asimov I, Robot     (5)
William Gibson Neuromancer      (5)
Robert A Heinlein Starship Troopers      (5)
Philip K Dick Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?    (5)
Larry Niven Ringworld      (5)
Aldous Huxley Brave New World     (5)
H G Wells The Time Machine    (5)
Arthur C Clarke Rendezvous With Rama    (5)
Robert A Heinlein The Moon is a Harsh Mistress   (5)
H G Wells The War of the Worlds   (5)
Arthur C Clarke Childhood's End     (5)
Dan Simmons Hyperion    (5)
Ray Bradbury The Martian Chronicles   (5)
Joe Haldeman The Forever War   (5)
Neal Stephenson Snow Crash    (5)
Kurt Vonnegut Slaughterhouse Five   (5)
Daniel Keys- Flowers For Algernon (5)
Ursula K Le Guin The Left Hand of Darkness   (5)
Orson Scott Card Speaker for the Dead   (5)
Philip K Dick The Man in the High Castle  (5)
Isaac Asimov The Caves of Steel  (5)
Frederik Pohl Gateway  (5)

If this gets enough interest, we may eventually narrow it down to one book.

Cyteen by C.J. Cherryh.  It won a Hugo award.

And it's the best SF novel ever written.  ;)

ha!
but i think its only one point per book.... Raving_Lunatic, care to clarify?

For each book I lowered the score of, I took only one point.  Then I gave all the deducted points to Cyteen.  I could have done it turn-by-turn for each book, but it was much more efficient the way I did it.

[edit]
Okay, here it is spelled out in full.  DKT took two turns in a single post, so there's precedent.

Orson Scott Card Ender's Game (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (6) +1

Isaac Asimov Foundation (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (7) +1

George Orwell 1984 (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (8) +1

Robert A Heinlein Stranger in a Strange Land (5) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (9) +1

Ray Bradbury Fahrenheit 451 (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (10) +1

Arthur C Clarke 2001: A Space Odyssey (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (11) +1

Isaac Asimov I, Robot (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (12) +1

Robert A Heinlein Starship Troopers (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (13) +1

H G Wells The Time Machine (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (14) +1

Arthur C Clarke Rendezvous With Rama (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (15) +1

Robert A Heinlein The Moon is a Harsh Mistress (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (16) +1

Ray Bradbury The Martian Chronicles   (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (17) +1

Kurt Vonnegut Slaughterhouse Five   (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (18) +1

Ursula K Le Guin The Left Hand of Darkness   (3) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (19) +1

Orson Scott Card Speaker for the Dead   (4) -1
C.J. Cherryh Cyteen (20) +15

And it took a great deal of restraint to not take all of Rendezvous with Rama's points at one go  ;)

Hey, you cheated Stranger in a Strange Land!

Fixed.  I tried to be accurate but somehow missed that one.  And obviously I didn't count Heradel's score-uppage because the corresponding deductions weren't specified.

Wow. What a huge response in such a short time... I guess it was the title.

You can only subtract one point from one book and add one point to another in the original game- you can't just deduct points from all of them. You can't post twice in a row either, but you can post twice in a day providing you don't post twice in a row. Once a book has zero points, it is OUT and cannot be returned.

Also, sorry if this isn't clear, but I reckon it is best to copy and paste the list in full from the previous poster and then highlight the books you changed, so that everyone knows what is going on.

With that little clarification, I'll type the full list as it stands, with unintentional rule-breaks removed.

Which leaves Snow Crash one point away from elimination from the list. To show elimination, just put a (-) where the item was.

Much as I'd like to see Snowcrash off the list. three minus one does not equal one.

Edit: Ah, the error is mine, apologies. It seems I missed the fact that this had gone onto page 2, and I based mine off the final entry on page 1.

Whoops.
