I thought this was a pretty good story, very creepy in its own way. Solid, if not terribly original. I think it was hurt by the inclusion of supernatural elements (even if they were not actually supernatural - is Ren a ghost appearing to Barry, or just a memory?). I think this one would have benefitted more with the supernatural-esq. parts removed. The killer dad who keeps his boys locked up can hit very close to home - it's a monster which could be anywhere: a co-worker, a neighbor, even a friend or... a husband (dun-dun-DUN).
In some places, the story went out of its way to remind me (the dad saying "we can't go to the police, and let me remind you why..." and the kid thinking the same thing). Once we established that police = psychiatrist = lobotomy, we get the connection. Other than that, the language was good and the dialog felt like little kids talking. The realism felt spot-on too: psychopaths like the dad frequently use lies about the authorities to retain control.
This story, likewise, was made all the more chilling by the recent apprehension of Phillip Garrido - a man who kidnapped Jaycee Dugard and raped her repeatedly for something like 18 years. She bore him 2 children. Life, it seems, is more horrible than fiction.
Finally, the one off-putting thing (and I am sure it was unintentional) was that the dad kinda sounded like an impression of Barack Obama. Made me chuckle sometimes. And the fact that the kid was named "Barry" didn't help haha.
Overall a solid piece.
