Hey all,

So, in about 4 weeks my girlfriend and I are going on a small adventure trip to Tanzania, hiking up mt. Kilimanjaro, then hanging out a bit in the countryside and Zanzibar. I'm wondering, has anyone here been to Kilimanjaro? Any advice or warnings worth keeping in mind?

Sorry, no advice, though Heather and I want to try the hike some time.

Are you going with an organized tour group?  If so, I'm sure they know everything you need to know.

Otherwise, all I know is from an Omnitheater show I watched on it last year.  Bring lots of layers cuz it gets cold up top.  Pace yourself--if you exert yourself too hard too fast at the higher altitudes you might get altitude sickness.

We are going as part of a group, but that doesn't really help with preperation, only with what we encounter while we're there. There are plenty of websites with information, but I was hoping to find someone who has first hand experience and can maybe answer questions.

You might want to check out http://ask.metafilter.com/. Based on an archive search it looks like some other people have asked similar questions there. For example, here's a list of all the questions users have asked about travel in Tanzania: http://ask.metafilter.com/tags/tanzania. Just in case you wanted a larger sample group for your query. (Membership actually costs $5, so you wouldn't be able to ask a question yourself without ponying up, but lurking is free and quite enjoyable.)
