I believe Papa Was a Gypsy should have gotten +2 rather than +1, putting it at 5 points.

Also wow, why all the hate on Set Down This.  Calling it pointless seems a bit harsh, considering how much interesting discussion there was about it.  With 5 pages of discussion, I don't see how it can be uninteresting.  Now maybe that turns out to not be award-worthy, but you guys seem to have it in for this one hardcore.  I don't know that I actually loved the story, but it is one of those ones I've found myself thinking about day after day and I really think there is a lot to it.  That said, I don't like defending leaders this early in with this type of a game.

Sorry Horror of the Heights, I have to pull a Batman at this point: I won't kill you, but I'm not going to save you either.

-1 to the Engine of Desire, +1 to The Blessed Days

Double checked. It only got +1 between the tallies, and was at 3 last tally.

aye, the math works out.  fonts don't transfer with cut/paste so i've cleaned up the list to make it easier to track, anybody that wants additional story information can find it in the first post.

i had originally wanted to take the point from the horror of the heights and give it to oil of dog, these two stories serve as an excellent example of the difference between speculative fiction that ties itself to a particular moment in time (the early age of flight) and specfic that remains fresh a century after it's written.

but it looks like a little work's needed to keep set down this alive for the top ten and it's worth it.  the footage coming out of egypt & bahrain makes it more relevant than ever and i don't want to see a story generally popular in nominations die early because of a vocal minority.

-1 to The Getalong Gang because nothing actually happened.  I'd have liked it better if the guy actually killed his kids and then maybe wasn't sure, instead of just ending it by deciding to go along with everything.

+1 to Set Down This, to help stem the point-bleed.

what this is about is whatever you make it about.
if you want to be a vocal minority and feed one pet story then no one's saying you're wrong to do it, but other people may make this about stopping you.

today i turn to turning the apples (a solid story that added a nice touch of scifi to pseudopod, but not top of the list material) and use its gifts to strengthen set down this.

I'm going to take a portion of The Hand You're Dealt [-1] and render it into Oil of Dog [+1]. It's got more than enough spare parts.

Guess I should have put in a smiley. I wasn't saying I was going to do that.

I'll give [-1] to "Is This A Horror Story?" There's no doubt it's a good piece but I'd rather something else win. And so [+1] to "The Dark Level".

The Dark Level is the scariest tale of Man's search for Parking that I've ever heard, I was about to give it some love myself, just for solidarity, but I'm worried about the top pulling too far ahead of the pack as I keep focusing on the bottom.  Maybe tomorrow.

[+1] Papa Was a Gypsy, the best Southern Gothic Horror since Pigeons From Hell.

And I'll counteract some of the top-end boosterism I've been complaining about here:
[-1] The Nimble Men to level off the top (I prefer Acceptable Losses, I don't hate Nimble Men, but I don't think it needs to be significantly out front).

Note to whoever chooses stories: podcasting Pigeons From Hell would be a great 300th episode special.  Ideally with Ben Phillips' lovely accented reading from Gypsy and Ol. can. [/sucking up]
