I just had some pie, in fact.

There is, however, only one pie, and that is cherry pie.  Ya'll weirdos and your soft, foamy interior pies can go hang.

Wait, the "other" category is going to screw up the results between cake and pie!

Cake is much better than pie.
But there are better things than cake (those things are, of course, also much better than pie).

I figured it was only fair to include an option for those heathens who refuse to acknowledge pie and cake as mutual kings of the dessert realm.

It's a hard question to decide - I think I prefer most pies to most cakes. But the best cakes are better than the best pies...

Such a hard question when you come right down to it! On the one hand, I prefer most cakes over most pies. On the other hand, there are the Best Pies. Now I'm really sad that I no longer live in an area that has Baker's Square. :P

Cake, hands down. I can't find it on the intranet, but I recall some comedian laying it out thusly: "When you eat cake frosting straight from the can, you feel decadent and indulgent. If you find yourself eating pie filling straight from the can, it's probably because you're trying to survive after a natural disaster."

Now here's a question: cheesecake -- is that cake or actually pie?

I would say cheesecake is actually a pie... cake-cake doesn't involve crusts.

Not so fast, Talia! I suspect you're just saying that because you like pie more, and feel guilty that a cake might surpass it. But it's cheeseCAKE, so I argue it's REALLY CAKE!

Disclosure: I voted for Option 3, because I was swayed by Ann's pie in a cake picture. It would probably kill me, but I'd die happy...

My unholy love for New York style cheesecake (which can only be described in clicks, grunts, rude gestures and pictograms of Velociraptors tearing apart sad faced people made of spongecake) drives me not only to vote for Cake, but to take arms against my filthy pie-loving foes.

Fear my wrath o' people of the pie, for it is terrible and.... wait... is that a cheesecake over there?!

Cake. I have a dark cocoa cake cooling downstairs right now, waiting for me to apply the whipped caramel milk chocolate frosting.

Give me cake!
Pies ultimately are a crust with some sort of filling. Tasty, yes, but not really much you can do with that.

Cake, on the other hand lends itself to so many varieties. A cake is typically a set of sweet baked goods layered on top of each other with various fillings (pie filling, ice cream, etc.) and topped with a frosting of some sort. There are litterally thousands of combinations and kinds. OR, you can just eat the cake batter strait. No need to cook it.

I'm late to this conversation, but the subject matter is important enough that I feel the need to weigh in. The thing is, there are pros and cons to both. Pies have fruit, which can be very tasty, but cakes typically have frosting, which is sugar heaven. Then there's cheesecake, which I think someone mentioned already is technically pie.

Really, when it comes to dessert, I prefer anything smothered in caramel, which is more likely with a pie than a cake. Caramel Apple Pie is divine. I nearly went for "Other" because I could eat a bowl full of caramel covered ice cream any day. Which would be a pro for cake since cake is most commonly served with ice cream.

In the end, I voted for pie because Cheesecake and Caramel Apple. I couldn't vote for "other" because the poll is which is better. Even if you don't like either one, you have to have a preference of one over the other. So pie it is.

Also because:

Wait...

Is cheesecake a pie or a cake?!

I mean...technically, it's a pie, right? You've got a crust, you pour in a filling, you bake (or not)...

BUT...it's called cheeseCAKE

I leave the question to better minds than my own.

I like Cheesecake.

Ice Cream!!
Because there is always room for ice cream!!

Pie, because as much as I love Ice Cream (and I do) you never say Ice Cream and Cake, or Ice Cream and Pie.  Ice cream is always the side, Cake and Ice Cream, Pie topped with a scoop of Ice Cream (the best Apple Pie, with a scoop of Cinammon Ice Cream)

Oh come on people its obvious. Unlike cake, pie has the superpower of being able to be both the main course and the desert. And it can even do this in a portable version ie. The pasty and the pastry ....

Portable cake just isn't worth eating. Unless maybe it's a brownie. Damn .

Hmm... Well, restricting myself only to dessert pies and cakes, I would still have to go for pie.

Trifle is nice. But the best trifles are the ones with pieces of cake suspended in the jelly, instead of fruit. Cake also has Jaffa Cakes in its corner, and possibly even doughnuts.

But you can't beat a good cheesecake. Which is really pie. The very best, and hardest to find, being black cherry cheesecake. MMMMMmmmmmm!!!!

Okay, I found this recipe here: http://piecaken.blogspot.ca/2013_11_01_archive.html.
Problem was that I didn't have any of the ingredients on hand and was too lazy to go to the store, so I made do with what I had. The result was an apple pie inside a white cake with cream cheese frosting. Not as visually spectacular as the picture in the above recipe, but this one was real and ready to eat. Verdict: Not sure. I like the pie filling in the cake a lot, but am not sure what the pie crust adds. May have to try making it again.

Update (April 2021). Made it again during Covid-19 lockdown. Have decided that pie crust in a cake is not good. Will not be making this a third time.

I've never really understood the appeal of pie crust.  Thus, I only like pies when the filling is so amazing that it makes up for the pointless crust or when they have something like a graham cracker crust.  Or a chocolate cookie crust.

Pecan pie with chocolate cookie crust is one of the few pies, in my opinion, that can actually compete favorably with a really good cake.

This is the first time I've understood that "Pie vs cake" is a question of two sweet things. I've always assumed *savoury* pie vs cake.

Now that's a really tricky question, because a really good pie - steak and kidney, say, or the wonderful duck and orange ones our local butcher used to make - is a thing of wonder. And obviously cake is good. Usually.

But sweet pie vs sweet cake? I don't really care.

So I've gone for other (chocolate mousse, probably, or maybe even a crêpe beurre sucre, which is the simplest yet most delicious dessert in the universe if done with salty butter).

They do, and at least on the West Coast, other savory pies seem to be making a comeback, at specialty pie restaurants that serve both desert pies and savory pies. I'm a big fan.

Quiche definitely counts as a savoury pie!

I think we need to rephrase this poll, otherwise we're not comparing like with like. I mean, how many previous voters might have been under the same misapprehension as me and voted for savoury vs sweet?
