indiecowgirl I respect your tenacity. I really dug Lights as I think it's an effective zombie story as it focuses on the people and not the monsters. We got two well developed characters with very focused input. However, I like it a little less than the other five on the list. I challenge you to try to sway me from my relentless grind of its points.

Fenrix, if you want to know why I won't give up on Lights here it is.  First off I don't like zombie stories.  That being said I prefer horror stories that are more personal.  This is a story about one man finding out his nature.  It looks at the darker side of what humanity can be and shows how even the smallest chance at hope can change a person.  It brings up questions like, how would you react if the world went crazy tomorrow? Would you fight for survival or hide, would you try to help others even if it cost you?  Thomas spends most of the story trying to reconcile his decisions to place his survival first and how that changes when there is hope for something more than just survival.  It is a quiet story of desperation and hope that all came down to a choice.  Do you stay where it is safe but empty or do you fight both your own fear and the unknown, all for just a glimmer of hope that something can be better?  The answer is different for everyone but what would you want it to be for you or that other stranger.  I like the other stories on this list but none of them brought out this kind of a reaction from me which is why I will go down fighting.

Your heartfelt plea for hope and character studies has moved me. So rather than attack hopeful characters tragically doomed, I will go after one who is unable to control her hopes. But the point goes to one of the stories that was the most fun.

I'll throw in a vote here, I absolutely hated what I heard of Looker before I stopped listening.  Conversely, I really dug The Line.  It did a great job of bringing a childhood horror to life.

I'd like to hear my options, so I could weigh them, what do you say?
Five pounds?  Six pounds? Seven pounds?

And then there were five.

Dearest Daughter was a fantastic story and will be missed from the list. I appreciate that with this story you have the ability to appreciate it as either an unreliable narrator story or as a monster story and both standing up under scrutiny.

Looker, I fear you will be gone soon. You had one of the most unique monsters of the year, again with multiple interpretations. Is it a horrible monster that brainwashes before devouring? Is it an analogy for losing one's identity in a relationship? Is it a breakup suicide analogy? Is it some freaky monster you want to love? My mourning starts now, but I will not deal the killing blow. I am responsible for so many already.
