So, my wife and I recently decided to buy into the phenomenon of "geek couples where the one plays video games while the other does handicrafts as a way of unwinding together." We did this with Xenosaga, which the guy at Gamestop recommended in that instant recognition way that tends to bode well. The thing is, I've been a long time away from the JRPG scene - I think the last game I played significantly was FFX? - and I'm way behind the times. Can anyone offer any advice, pointers, and other sundry recommendations to help me make sure that my first foray into video games in a long (long) time isn't completely frustrating?

Don't give up! Videogames are challenging, and just because you keep dying doesn't mean you can't play it! I've never played Xenoblade, but if it's anything like other JRPG's, sometimes you just need to backtrack and level up in an easier environment to beat that damn boss.
And don't be afraid to look at the online strategy guide!

I'd like to hear my options, so I could weigh them, what do you say?
Five pounds?  Six pounds? Seven pounds?
