Yes, the rumors are true! I'll update the submissions page tonight, but we are going to be doing a block of science fantasy stories this year at PodCastle!

What does science fantasy mean to us? Here are some basic ideas.

Dragons in space! Magic on a dying earth! Fantastical forests on the moon! Sorcerers on spaceships!

And, you know, everything in between.

BUT ABSOLUTELY NO MIDICHLORIANS!!!

Send them to us at submit@podcastle.org as you normally would, but mark the title of your submission "SF Submission: Story Title".

Thanks, and looking forward to reading them!

Poor midichlorians, they get no love.

Idea for the next EP flash contest - all submissions must have midichlorians in them. As protagonists.

Eh, completely depends on your perspective. From where I'm sitting, it's another laser blast dodged.

These blast points are far too precise for sand people.

All cat stories start with this statement: “My mother, who was the first cat, told me this...”

...something something single file to hide their numbers something something...

O boy! Does this mean more arguments about (a) what constitutes sci-fi, (b) what constitutes fantasy and (c) n'er the twain shall meet?

Quick answers:
(a) If the magic behind the story is explained by (pseudo)science.
(b) If the magic behind the story is explained by magic.
(c) Mark Twain sometimes dabbled in fantasy, but mostly just rural fiction. (That's fiction taking place in a rural setting) A Kentucky Yankee in King Arthur's Court was pretty fantasy-y, and it was hilarious, his funniest book IMO.

There, see? Simple answers to simple questions don't need to be argued about. ;D

A Kentucky ConnecticutYankee in King Arthur's Court...

Had to correct that.  Now to contribute to the discussion:

Science Fantasy is what Dave points to when he says "Science Fantasy."  Which is why all midichlorian laser-sword crap should be sent to the Podcastle slush box!

Thanks. But in a sense (a New Yorker sense) I was right. It's one of those "out of town" states.

Come now, Connecticut is basically a suburb of New York.

It's on the wrong side of the Hudson, so it's all the same to me. ;P

OK, I have NO idea if this is any good, or if the suggestion is welcome, but I have bleepin' insomnia, and I tripped over this:

The Galactic Mage Series

Well, at least it LOOKS like a complete fantasy-Sci-Fi mashup....

Would this include sword-and-planet stories? I.e. secondary world fantasy set on a different planet, potentially without science-y elements?

Does that mean that you didn't consider science fantasy before?  Because I think I already sent you all my science fantasy and Ann Leckie shot it down like all the rest.  :)

No, sorry :) It just means we're doing a themed block of stories this time, not that we weren't open to running the occasional Science Fantasy before. So if you have one, and haven't sent it to us before, now's a good time :)
