a good ghost story with a pointless character and rape scene.  Comparisons can be made to both The Others and The Sixth Sense

Didn't see the twist coming, and is ambiguous ending (not that this hurts it any).  I don't understand the point of the Gardner character.  He had nothing to do with the rest of the story, and I'm not sure why they felt a need for a rape scene.

Thanks for the warning about the pointless rapeyness. I'll be sure to skip it.

Honestly, I saw the title "The Awakening" I thought you meant the graphic novel by Ross Campbell of teenagers surviving the zombie apocalypse in Louisiana. I normally don't go for zombies but this book was absolutely amazing.

If The Awakening is what I think it is, then I know the author (a tiny bit). I wonder if that scene was in the draft he submitted...I do know he was pretty unhappy with how he was treated after production but I don't have full context for it unfortunately.

Kat, that graphic novel sounds really good. Do you have the publisher of it to hand? Also hi:) Also my goodie package from you and Josh arrived, thanks for that:) I'll get the review of Crazy Mary on deck when I'm back from holiday, likewise the intro.

Hey Alasdair!
Oh good. I'm glad the package arrived and I look forward to hearing your review.

The book is by Ross Campbell and it was published by Tokyopop who no longer exists.
And looking into it I find I got it confused the title with another awesome horror book. Ross's book is called the Abandoned

Awakening is by Nick Tapalansky and Alex Eckman-Lawn. It too is an amazing Zombie story where you are following a noir detective and his dealings with a conspiracy theorist. Some of her theories are totally bogus, but others are real... and you aren't sure if her theory about zombies is real or not. It is published by Archaia and there are two volumes
