For class we were asked to find a sad story. I cannot listen to everything. I cannot tell by title alone what is sad and what is not. But I can listen to several different stories.

What should I listen to?

Stop throwing gnomes at me. They hurt.

Look for anything by Mike Resnick. Also The Paper Menagerie.

All cat stories start with this statement: “My mother, who was the first cat, told me this...”

I like "PC254: Sundae" or maybe "PC260: Fine Flying ThingsFine Flying Things". Pseudopod 049: Big Boy By Ron McGillvray is another I think, but I may be leaving the Genre you want.

Insanity takes it's toll. Please have exact change.

Paper Menagerie won the Nebula, the Hugo, and the World Fantasy award. (Probably more.) might be worth mentioning in your class, should you choose it.
