I thought this story was amazing. It is complex on almost every level, and it defies attempts at simple moral categorization. I don't think we were supposed to root for either side of the conflict. We were supposed to find the protagonists both appalling and yet sympathize with their predicament. I'm finding it difficult to express my thoughts about this one simply, so I'll just say this is one of the best portrayals of the experience of living in a conflict that I've heard or read in short story form. And the narration was marvelous too.
