I was eight when my elementary school librarian first handed me "The Book of Three" which I devoured in almost two days, then reread twice before returing the book. I learned then that four more tales in The Chronicles of Prydain remained. This was my first exposure to a series of interconnected novel-length stories, and also, to pure quest fantasy. While I rapidly outgrew dragons and magic and their trappings for the technological wizardry of hard science fiction, I've always had a very warm little corner of my heart for this series of books and look forward to passing them on to my son.

So, Mr. Alexander, a posthumous thank you!

I heard about this on LJ yesterday.  I think he was the first fantasy writer I really picked up on my own, largely due to the Black Cauldron.  5 years ago I reread some of his stuff and still enjoyed it immensely.

We'll miss you, Mr. Alexander.  Thanks for the stories.

I didn't know he was still alive until it turned out he wasn't, I don't think any of his books other than the Prydain titles were published over here and I enjoyed them immensely.
