Episode 193: Staff Pick 2015 – Princesses Do Not Breathe Fire by Sarina Dorie

Narrated by Jeff Hite and family!
Audio production by Rikki LaCoste
Originally published in Flagship Magazine, February 2012.

Every year in January, Cast of Wonders takes the month off to recharge our batteries, plan the year ahead, and highlight some of our favourite episodes. As part of joining the Escape Artists family, this year we’re pulling out all the stops. We’re running 10 staff pick episodes over the month, each one hosted by a different member of the Cast of Wonders crew.

We hope you enjoy assistant editor Jeff Hite’s favorite story from 2015, Princesses Do Not Breathe Fire by Sarina Dorie and narrated by Jeff Hite and family. The story originally aired July 19, 2015 as Episode 170.

When Princess Draciona was born, it was obvious something wasn’t quite right. She had emerald eyes and viridian hair. Most unusual of all was her scaly, moss-tinted skin.

Original Episode 170 Notes:
Sarina Dorie is the author of award-winning, YA paranormal romance novel, Silent Moon. Her Puritan and alien love story, Dawn of the Morning Star, is due to come this year with Wolfsinger Publications. She has sold over sixty-five short stories to markets like Daily Science Fiction, Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction, Orson Scott Card’s IGMS, Cosmos, and Sword and Laser. By day, Sarina is a public school art teacher, artist, belly dance performer and instructor, copy editor, fashion designer, event organizer and probably a few other things. By night, she writes. As you might imagine, this leaves little time for sleep. You can find info about her short stories and novels on her website, or follow her on Twitter.

The story is read for you by assistant editor and King of the Slush Pile Jeff Hite, with ample help from his children.

This one was a cute and fun subversion of fairy tale tropes about helpless princesses.

Haha! This was great, and the reading made it adorable. I would like to ask most of the characters to rethink their limited definitions of nouns such as "princess" and "dragon" though. :D
