There are several on other folk's lists that I second (and third), but I'll try not to be redundant:

-candles on a cold night
-Heinlein, before he went nuts
-Firefly & Serenity, most of Buffy.
-Thaurismunths sleeping in the light of daybreak, in a tent
-crisp fall air

-"Hawk the Slayer" (with lots of booze and many friends--sober is a whole different movie)
-"Crescent," and Phil Rossi
-EP and PP, of course!
-Rockblock SoNo Syrah wine and Neuhaus chocolates. Good alone, awesome together
-my three-legged black cat
-That great Irish Pub in Detroit, where the owner's dog will sit at your table. In your chair. And eat your food if you're not watching too closely. (Foran's Irish Pub). And their all-from-scratch Reubens.
-Full Metal Alchemist
-Scrabble
-Green Zebra heirloom tomatoes
-the view from Mary's Rock, which is worth every inch of the climb.

So I was out one night with two other Americans and one Japanese guy.   When you get more than one American together at a bar in Japan, we invariably complain about Japan.  We live here and often are married to Japanese people, so it's all in fun.  If you don't do it you go nuts.  Anyway, after an hour or two of getting increasingly loud and drunk, it finally made it through our think gaijin skulls that maybe we were being insensitive to our Japanese friend.  So I asked him:

"We've been complaining about Japan.  You lived in the US, what complaints to you have about America?"
"Oh, nothing.  It was very nice."
"C'mon, we're all friends here.  We can take it.  What did you not like about the US?"
"You have too many couch potatoes.  You lay in the couch and just watch TV."
"That's the best you got?  Laying on the couch and watching TV is awesome.  What else?"
"Too many parties.  You guys go out and party too much."
"Mmmmmm ... yeah.  That's actually not too bad, either.  You did understand the question, right?"
"Also, the food is not so healthy.  Too many hamburgers and fries."
"Okaaay.  Yeah.  I actually like hamburgers and fries."

Now the Japanese are playing 3-D chess when it comes to etiquette, so he was certainly softballing us and avoiding anything that might cause controversy.  But still, the three Americans agreed that he had deftly summed up three of our favorite things about the US.  So, long story short, my addition to the list of awesome comes from my Japanese friend:

couch potatoes
partying too much
burgers and fries

Why quote me.  Unless you're one of those that thinks it's unAmerican to criticize a president.

You can do the same thing from New Brunswick to British Columbia.

You can do the same from Italy to Sweden by only flashing your ID at the international borders.  You can't do that from Mexico to Canada.

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply in any way that I was supporting Bush, only that I was seconding your sentiments.

I over-reacted.  I just heard that "anyone who doesn't support the President is un-American" line way too often.  It has to be the single most un-American comment I've ever heard in my life.

No harm done. :)
And speaking of thread hijacking, why is dissent "the Highest Form of Patriotism?"

Because it exercises your first ammendment rights.
And speaking of thread hijacking, why is dissent "the Highest Form of Patriotism?"

Because when you do it, your exercising your first ammendment rights, and (hopefully) taking an active part in democracy.
Title: NINJA BABY KICK! Re: List of awesome
Post by: Listener on November 30, 2007, 07:22:30 PM
Because I couldn't find a place to post this amusing picture, here's something awesome.

Explanation:  my daughter was sitting on the deck at my parents' house in that ninja-kick position.  I saw the photo on my memory card and I knew what I had to do.  So I googled for a photo of a dude getting kicked in the head, replaced the kicker with my daughter, and voila!  Ninja Baby Kick!
