Title: Colds Suck!

I've got a cold.  It sucks!  How sucky was your last cold?

Pretty much sucked and lingered forever.  Couldn't get rid of that sucky thing.   It least it wasn't bronchitis or the flu, two suckier winter-time maladies.

I came down with the local cold/flu/sinus infection when I moved this summer.
Wasn't too bad, though it had me feeling exhausted for two weeks... but I took some Heradol and it cleared right up. ;)
Illness with me seems to be hard and fast (two days of incapacitation) or slow and easy (two weeks of 'tired' and a runny nose).

I hate being sick, but I am told that the feeling I get from plain old, over-the-counter cold medicine is what a lot of people pay good money for in shady street corner deals.

If I happen to be sick during the work week, I have to decide between taking the day off to sleep (which really isn't necessary, medically) or spending the day freaking out my co-workers.  I am told that I was riding in an elevator full of strangers, and said out loud, "Man, that Santa is one fast fat man."  It was August.

But the worst was when my overflowing bedside trashcan was zapped by a power surge from the electrical outlet, and the organic matter in the tissues came to life and began rifling my sock drawer in a hunt for food.    I lured it outside with a trail of semi-sweet chocolate chips, and I think it disintegrated in the rain... but I have heard apocryphal reports of a blob monster living in the Chesapeake bay...

No, I'm not on cold meds right now.  Why do you ask?

I have two kids in Kindergarten right now.  In the fall that meant a new illness every week.  I avoided many, but not all.

Mine is in day-care. Same concept. I think that from November through present either my wife, my daughter, or I have been suffering some kind of cold.

It sucks mightilly.

My wife is a teacher for 4 years now, so her super immune system can fight off almost everything.  She just brings it home to me.

My last cold was more of an annoyance (runny nose, sore throat).  Last week I got a nasty case of the stomach flu though.  Holy crap.  I was down for three days and could barely leave the couch.  Achy joints, couldn't keep anything down, fever.  It was terrible.  I was even supposed to go lugeing with my boss and some co-workers and had to cancel.  The worst part is I still had to pay because I reserved a spot.  I even got a flu shot this year.

So be thankful you just have a cold and not the flu.

A doctor I know told me that the flu stain out there is not the one that health officials though would show up this year so the shots were only 40 -45% effective.

That's why I don't get flu shots.

My daughter got one.  I got the flu, she didn't, but I still had to be careful around her when I had the flu last week.  I didn't touch her for two days.  I missed her.

I used to not get flu shots and then got in to a bad spell where I got the flu three years in a row, the second two years it was so bad I lost 3-4 days of my life laying in bed like a zombie.  I've had a flu shot the last 7 years and have been flu free in each year, and hopefully I'll dodge this year's bug.

I think the effective rate is usually quite a bit higher.   It's worth it to me to take a few minutes out of my day to get the shot.

Been running with a bad cold the last couple of days. Friday I couldn't talk, Saturday I felt better after steady doses of Sudafed...and Sunday morning I somehow threw my back out coughing?! ???

I think I've done that, but with my stomach... strained my stomach muscles.

Warning about Sunmark's off-brand nasal decongestant:  I took one Wednesday night and was up every hour in the bathroom.  MAJOR diuretic effect.

TMI, I know, but if it helps another person...

That's rough... I've been there.  In my case, I had foolishly shoveled the sidewalk while feeling "snuffly", and managed to simultaneously weaken my lumbar region and aggravate my respiratory system; so one good sneeze knocked me flat for a day and a half.  The wife was not amused.

A lady I work with actually broke a rib she coughed so hard.  Ouch!
