Title: TAM or Dragon Con
Post by: qwints on February 21, 2008, 06:01:42 AM
So, I listen to both science fiction and skeptics podcasts and am torn between attending the Amazing Meeting and Dragon Con. I definitely can't do both. I know Steve is a Dragon Con fan, but I gather I'm not the only one who's torn between the two. Any advice?

DragonCon is unlike anything you've ever attended.  Even though I just walked through the dealer's room and gawked at costumes the last time, that was still... just, the sheer press of costumed people was INSANE.  If I'd paid for admission and attended some panels and parties and stayed at the hotels... well... that probably would've been even better.

Never heard of TAM.

Can someone whose been to both do a compare and contrast between Dragoncon and Worldcon?
I've been to Worldcon, never been to Dragoncon.  Sounds awesome.

TAM sounds cool, but the Skepticality guys ruined it for me.  I live on the other side of the planet and have no chance to go to TAM, but they pimped it on every episode.  And interviews they did at TAM were about how awesome TAM is and how many famous people were there.  I got tired of it and stopped listening.

It's short for The Amazing Meeting (organized by The Amazing Randi).  It's a meeting of skeptics held in the world capital of rational thought, Las Vegas.  I dissed it, but it actually looks very cool.  Though, even though I'm a skeptic,  I'm not sure what skeptics talk about when they get together.
"Don't you love not believing in stuff?"
"Yeah it's awesome.  Religious people, especially Christians, are lame."

Listen to the excellent Skeptic's Guide to the Galaxy and you'll find out what skeptics talk about.  In short: a lot of pro-science, anti-supernatural, anti-pseudoscience, and anti-religion.   Skeptics don't specifically pick on Christians, either.  I've heard a lot of great Scientology discussion lately.
