Title: XXX SF Markets?
Post by: Liminal on May 16, 2008, 03:40:17 PM
I have a science fiction story (4600 words) that has a lot of explicit sex and some graphic violence and was wondering if some of you might know of good markets for that kind of story. I'm building up my own list but any advice or leads would be hugely appreciated.

Thanks.

You could start with Ruthie's Club:

Also, if you sign up for the announcement list at ERWA you'll find out about many, many anthology RFS's without having to look around.

Finally, if the PAYING markets don't pan out, there's always my podcast.

Cthulhu Sex is unfortunately closed.

A lot depends on whether you're wirting graphic sex for its own sake -- e.g. if you'd classify the writing as erotica -- or if it appears in service of plot. There are many more paying markets that are fine with publishing graphic sex if it appears in an excellent story than those which explicitly seek it.

I don't think I would classify it as erotica - the sex is more a reflection of certain personalities encountering extreme social changes.  I guess to be more specific, I'm looking for science fiction markets that don't mind sex and violence as integral elements to the world of the story. If I were to compare the vibe I'm trying to get at, it would be a bit like Moorcock's Cornelieus Chronicles - sex and sexuality are suffused throughout the story, but in an almost off-hand way, providing a background for the characters emotional arcs.

Does that make sense?

In that case, most of your SF markets will take it.

Avoid Intergalactic Medicine Show and the religious magazines and Writers of the Future.

Most everyone else should be willing to consider sexuality. Particularly places like Chizine and Clarkesworld that are happy with darker material.

Thanks to both of you for your thoughts on this.

Aye. And over at Pantechnicon and Hub we wouldn't turn it down for being graphic. Hell, check out The Trapper in Pantechnicon Seven  ;D

I see Cthulhu doesn't have sex with men.

I never realised the Great Old One was so picky!

Nah, it's not that, it's that noone wants to read about it.

It's like all those "dog bites man" stories that never get published in the newspaper.  It happens, but the media ignores it.

Well, Cthulhu is a priest, after all. Maybe he took a vow of chastity.

You know, I've always wondered about the maddening quality of the Great Old One, pondered if his being would be so horrible to a modern man.

Cthulhu having sex? Yeah, that would drive me crazy as hell.
