Title: Spore!
Post by: Ocicat on June 19, 2008, 08:23:17 PM
If you haven't heard, Spore (http://www.spore.com/) is a computer game coming out this September.  It promises to be the most ambitious "sim" game ever.  It has several stages... you start out controlling a single cell in the primordial soup.  As you play get gene points to upgrade your abilities.  In the second stage you crawl out onto land, and customize how your race looks and what it can do.  Then you move on to the tribal stage, then a civ real time strategy stage, then eventually get advanced enough to build a spaceship, and blast off to space to explore other worlds.

While the game itself is still months from being released, I've been playing with the free download creature creator (http://www.spore.com/trial), and it's lots of fun.  All the critters created with this will be used in the real Spore game, but it's plenty of fun to just make them up.  I've already created quite a few.  You can see my critters on my "Sporepedia" page:

If anyone else is playing with this, post your stuff!

I've heard of this and it sounds cool.   I was heavily in to the Sims and SimCity 4 at one time and am looking forward to this.   I hope it doesn't suck.   How cool to be able to play god mother nature and see cartoon evolution at work.

I keep on playing with this thing... some of my favorite creations so far:

A Gug, from Lovecraft's dreamlands
(http://ll-697.ea.com/spore/static/image/500/005/697/500005697130_lrg.png)

King Ghidorah, from Godzilla movies

My dragon

A... thing

A... robot thing
(http://ll-641.ea.com/spore/static/image/500/005/641/500005641896_lrg.png)

Manticore
(http://ll-388.ea.com/spore/static/image/500/004/388/500004388630_lrg.png)

My cat, Caliban
(http://ll-744.ea.com/spore/static/image/500/005/744/500005744133_lrg.png)

Centaur
(http://ll-931.ea.com/spore/static/image/500/005/931/500005931659_lrg.png)

And lots more, some of them very silly.  Hopefully they'll be popular (the sporepedia page (http://www.spore.com/sporepedia#qry=usr-Ocicat) has a voting utility for registered users) and will show up on lots of people's worlds when the game ships.

I heard on the PC Gamer Podcast that the magazine's editor-in-chief Kristen Salvatore was the first to have her Spore creature banned/deleted.  The creature was named "Boob-a-licious"  ;D

Never mind that there are many deliberately phallic creatures, created by other users, that remain.

oh but if intelligent design were true... yes there is life on other planets but they are all penises.

If intelligent design were true, I'd be putting in for a re-engineering of the human spinal column.  It's a total design cluster-f***.

Sorry, that's quite tangential, but I wrenched my back yesterday playing baseball with my son.

Pretty much the entire human body is (literally) a walking, talking argument against Intelligent Design.  But that's a whole other barrel of fish.

Well, for benevolent intelligent design. Intelligent beings can still create cruel jokes.
