Title: Film Poll Quarterfinals 2: Judgment Day
Post by: Ocicat on July 02, 2008, 06:28:17 PM
Empire got past Holy Grail by one vote!  Will Fight Club do as well against Star Wars?  And, yes, of course I mean "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" - except that isn't the title of the damn film.  It's just "Star Wars".  That's all it said on the posters and in the opening crawl when it came out in 1977.  The episode number and subtitle were added when it was re-released in 1981 - the first of Lucas' endless tamperings.  But I like to judge the film on it's original merits.  So yes: Han Shot First.

Star Wars.   No freaking question about it.

Since Han shot first, this is a tough choice.  I just watched Fight Club a couple of weeks ago, because of all of you fans.  I really liked it, but I grew up a Star Wars.  I'm torn.

I'll come back to this one.

I like Fight Club. But Star Wars wins.

I just have to go with Star Wars. And, Ocicat, thanks for the opening crawl trivia—i never knew that!

I haven't seen Star Wars in so long that I just forgot how great it was, but when I spent the time to think about it, I realized it wins this one easy.

I still haven't seen Fight Club.  Do I get a vote?  I'm not sure it's fair to vote Star Wars just because I haven't seen the other one.  (yeah, I think there's been a poll or two where that hasn't stopped me, but at least there were multiple films in those polls and I'd seen at least two of the five.)

What a difficult decision.  It's like pitting my childhood against my adulthood.

I'm totally torn here.

It is a tough call, but i had to dissect the question: "which movie do i like best?"

I think Fight Club is infinitely more deep than Star Wars, and if i had to make a recommendation about what you should watch between the two, I'd have to say Fight Club, but as to which movie i just like the best, i had to go with the more fun, more fantastical Star Wars.

wow. just, wow.

hundreds of years from now some internet archeologist will dig up this poll and download the movies for comparison. this will become the basis for a paper titled: 2000-2010, a decade of bad taste.

i vote Fight Club, but i dont think there is much that can stand up to Star Wars...

An extraordinarily tough call, but I went with Fight Club.

When I saw Star Wars recently, I found I was far more bothered by the 'B-movie' conventions -- highly-trained Imperial Storm Troopers who couldn't hit a stationary target at 100 yards, Leia emerging from days of brutal interrogation with perfect hair and unsmudged lipstick, etc. than I was when I first saw it.  (Of course, I was 15 at the time.) It's still a thrill ride, but I prefer the dark weirdness of Fight Club.

I've thought about it some more and decided to abstain from voting here.  It's not fair to the movie I haven't seen to vote for the other just because I have seen it.

So how do I display the results without voting?

Right now, it's 13 to 5, Star Wars. The creator of the thread would have to modify it so that the poll results can be seen without voting, i believe.

On the one hand, you still have the holiday weekend to rent Fight Club.

On the other hand, you may as well go ahead and vote Star Wars, because the outcome of the poll is pretty much guaranteed.

I only use NetFlix, and if I push Fight Club to the top of my queue, watch Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang right now and send it back tomorrow, I still wouldn't have Fight Club until Tuesday soonest.

On the other hand, you may as well go ahead and vote Star Wars, because the outcome of the poll is pretty much guaranteed.

Obviously Star Wars doesn't need my help.  I'll just abstain.

In today's episode of "Eytan's ever-changing criteria for voting", I decide that since these are both movies I really, really love, I'll vote based on which one I would rather *right now* now if given the option.

Fight Club it is.

Well, Fight Club did make a very strong comeback towards the end of the poll.  And this round had the lowest voter turnout of any of the finals rounds - so apparently lots of folks were frozen by indecision.

I believe that future generations will forgive us.

The less said about that, the better.  I saw it as a sprog when it aired, and hearing Mur Lafferty & Co. recap it was enough for me.

Indeed, it can't hold a candle to the Fight Club Christmas Special.

isn't that loving something intensely for one week then ditching it?
like a broken tree laying at the side of the road, tinsel still clinging to it.

That image is so sad.  I may cry.
