Title: Who? poll #2: The Three Doctors
Post by: stePH on August 04, 2008, 01:14:23 AM
Since some expressed consternation that they had to pick only one in the other poll, here's an expansion.  Again, the "ninth Doctor" played by Rowan Atkinson is included, as well as the one played by Peter Cushing in the two theatrical features, but the tenth, eleventh, twelfth and thirteenth Doctors from "The Curse of Fatal Death" aren't included because they had such a minimal amount of screen time (though I have to give a nod to Joanna Lumley ... "Look Emma!  I've got etheric beam detectors!" :D )

Sigh. The only Doctors I can remember seeing are Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker and Peter Davison. When they started producing episodes again I didn't jump on the band wagon---I knew I'd be addicted, and I couldn't justify the time, especially if they were on TV.

I found out last week, though, that a good friend has the entire lot (well, as much as is available) on DVD. I also have holidays coming up. I wonder...

Well, I've seen some of every Doctor on my list, though what I've seen of Hartnell and Troughton is minimal.

I always thought that Hartnell and Troughton was a good name for a detective agency...

Wow, who voted for Peter Cushing?  (admittedly, I found his character slightly less dickish than Hartnell's in the original story.)

Maybe somebody will vote for Rowan Atkinson after all.  :)  (I was tempted, but I had to go with McCoy, Tennant, and Mad Tom.  Still, I thought Atkinson did a fine job even though it was a spoof.)

Somebody's not using all their votes.  11 voters should be a total of 33 votes, but I count only 28.  That's five votes into the aether.  ???

My first Doctor was Jon Pertwee, in the serial where he changes to Tom Baker. But as soon as I saw Doctor #5, I was in love. Peter Davison was always my favorite. I had a terrible crush on him in "All Creatures Great And Small."

However, David Tennant has since replaced him in my book. Now it's 10, 5, 4. I dread the day they replace Tennant. He's just so wonderful.

I only used one vote.  Tom Baker.

Admittedly I have not yet watched any Tennant.  I saw half of Eccleston's run, and... eh.  Didn't make me want to use my time watching more of the show.  I fear I may have outgrown Dr. Who.  Disgraceful, I know...

I expected Tennant and Mad Tom to be the favorites, and the actual poll seems to be bearing this out.  I suspect it's due to their comparatively long tenures in the role (Tennant has just matched Hartnell's, Troughton's, Davison's, C. Baker's, and McCoy's durations and is under contract to at least match Pertwee's) along with the fact that for many viewers their first Doctor was one of them.  Tom Baker was the first seen by many Americans of my generation, and I suspect that many who have recently seen Doctor Who for the first time came into it seeing Tennant.

Plus, they're both really, really good in the role.

Thoughts?
