Man. I'll never look at a Gatorade bottle the same way again. :-\

Oh, I get it. It's very clever.
(I've seen that movie thousands of times. Literally.)
I was referring to the jungle scene in I am Legend mirroring that quote.

Fierce! :D
Will this stuff turn me into the Incredible Hulk?
Zathras, I'd seen I am Legend but never connected the Fight Club quote to it before. I find the idea of them swiping Fight Club kind of fascinating...
-
hmm me neither, realizing that now is cool. anyway... sig change again! :P felt like it.
-
::sniff:: It's nice to be at a forum where not only am I not shouted down for my tangents, but also is full of other people who can go on tangents.
I'm absolutely shocked that nobody was surprised enough about my Fight Club addiction to mention it.

The first time I saw it was yesterday.

Well, when you start listening to each commentary track once per day, your totals will rack up pretty quickly. >:(
Also, I have the 2 disc special edition that I had to order off the 'net. I find it strangely odd that I placed an order for Fight Club...

I must be missing something?
What's the joke?
Christian, one of the contestants on Project Runway (season before the last one), used fierce like the world would end if he didn't say it once an hour.

Huh. I thought it was just that the bottle looks like a penis, which I'd never noticed before this thread. It's possible I'm immature...

Thanks Ryos. My ideas about Gatorade have now been corrupted for good. :) Not that that's a bad thing.

He's hardly the first gay man to make heavy use of "fierce". I don't even watch Runway except for the clips I've seen on the show The Dish.
I first became aware of the usage of "fierce" by gay men when watching the season of Curb Your Enthusiasm that had Larry David starring in the stage production of The Producers. Later I noticed Tyra Banks says it a lot on America's Next Top Model (again, via clips shown on The Soup and The Dish.)
And now, Gatorade is fierce! ;D

So...You're using gay in a pejorative scene because Gatorade can make you gay? You can catch gay from Gatorade? It's made of gay? Their marketing department is lame?

No.

No.

No.
Their marketing department is lame?
Well ... yeah, maybe.
You're using gay in a pejorative scene because their marketing department is lame?
No.
Seriously, d00d, you're overanalyzing this. I saw the word "fierce" on the bottle and associated it with the usage by many homosexual men, and that's all there is to it.
-
yea dont start anything. please.
GO GATORS!
-
We'll see what's what 11/29 ;)
-
psh bring it.
-
Weird. I never associated the usage of the word "fierce" with gay men, so I didn't get the joke either. Actually, I associate it pretty much solely with "divas" like Tyra Banks (who's been using it since sometime in the 90's), and Biance (who has renamed herself Sasha Fierce and released a new album by that name). I don't watch a whole lot of TV (especially since we willfully don't have any kind of television service); but, none of the gay men I know personally use that word half as much as most of the women I know, especially younger women.
-
Ok. I was sitting in the driver's lounge yesterday and one of the TV judges, I didn't catch his name, who is a bit diva-ish used fierce. I'm not saying he's gay! He matches the old stereotype of gay. I have seen maybe 3 episodes of his show. Anywho, I would say that fierce is definately a diva word, regardless of the diva's sex.
I haven't been smacked with the chair for a while...
-

Actually, that sounds about right. It's a "drama queen" word.
-
I can't help but think of it as a "wildlife documentary" word.
-
Judge David Young is the "Fierce" judge.
-
Judge David Young is the "Fierce" judge.
Never heard of him. But Wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judge_David_Young) seems to think he's gay.

He's on now, and if he isn't gay, he is definately a diva. This show is so bad it's almost worth watching. They have a lie detector box that they make people sit in to review the results from their polygraph tests.
Read the wiki, it's pretty much spot-on from what I've seen. I actually enjoy this show. Someone please help me, i kin feelz my brain ooozing

Maybe I am. Or maybe I'm not analyzing it enough.
I'm not keyed in to that part of popular culture and my association with your subject line was that you were calling Gatorade "gay" as in "lame" because they chose such a lame word for their product. Maybe a link, or something, in your post might help clue some of us in on the 'joke'?
That said: I still don't get it. What's funny about the coincidence of gay men and ad executives using the word "fierce"? Maybe I'm just more PC than I use to be.

I think the funny part is that Gatorade markets itself as a very masculine alpha-male type of product, which doesn't fit with the fey/diva use of fierce. There's an unintended double-meaning.

I thought it was a reference to the song Glamour Boys (http://www.mtv.com/lyrics/living_colour/glamour_boys/12180116/lyrics.jhtml) by the funk-metal band Living Colour.
And here I thought it was the first time in ages I got a pop-culture reference on the first try...
TFB, old people need sleep...
-
I didn't know I had to put fierce on my "good words destroyed by over-pop-usage" list. I still can't use awesome in it's proper sense.

Sorry ... I always thought Time's Up to be the far superior album, so I don't think I ever listened to Vivid all the way through more than once -- I see "Glamour Boys" is the last song on that album so if I've heard it, I don't remember it at all.
