Tennant's leaving. (http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2008/oct/29/doctorwho-bbc)
David Tennant has announced that he is vacating the Tardis and leaving the BBC's Doctor Who series at the end of next year.
Tennant's decision brings to an end his popular four-year tenure as the time lord.
The BBC confirmed that the Scottish actor will complete the filming of four special episodes to be screened this year and in early 2010, as well as 2009's Christmas special.
Tennant broke the news of his departure at the National Television Awards as he accepted the outstanding drama performance prize. He said: "When Doctor Who returns in 2010 it won't be with me. The 2009 shows will be my last playing the doctor.
"If I don't take a deep breath and move on now, I never will."
Speaking about his time on the show, Tennant added: "It has been the most brilliant and life-changing time. But it's not over yet, I have a whole other year to go.
"Thank you for being so enthusiastic about the show, for watching it, and loving it."

I'm in the minority that I'm not a huge fan of David Tennant's Doctor. I think he jumps around and chews the scenery far too much, although I think he worked very well with Catherine Tate's Donna. Even acknowleding his popularity, though, I think it's good that he's not overstaying his welcome. Tom Baker stayed far too long, and ratings were in the doldrums and the show was largely forgotten when he finally went, a blow from which the show never really recovered.
I also think it's a good idea to let the new exec producer to start crafting the show in his own style right from the beginning.
All that said, I'm surprised he didn't stay for one last season in 2010. It's a little strange to hit the "regeneration" tease so hard a few months ago, and then turn around and do it for real just a year later. Hopefully it won't take some of the excitement from the real thing when it happens.

*** waiting for ChiliFan to post something hysterical and over-the-top ***
I've enjoyed Tennant's run and thought the last season was the best yet (since the 2003 revival anyway) ... but I'm sure Vast Toffee MN will have someone good to work with, so I'm not worried.
I still remember Tennant telling Graham Norton it's the "best job in the world" a couple of years ago, and thinking "he's not going any time soon."

I don't think this is a spoiler at all. Everyone knew that Tennant would eventually leave, as the Doctor is a character that keeps regenerating. Not only that, but looking at how long each of the other Doctors lasted, the average was about 4 years.
BIG NEWS SPOILERS!!!!
1. There will be a new Doctor appearing in 2010, but I predict he'll be leaving in 2014 or 2015
2. In order to keep the series running after the 13th Doctor, BBC bosses have decided to give him a son. Really? Considering the 1st Doctor travelled with his Granddaughter Susan, how is this news?

Well, yes, but they didn't know he'd regenerate quite this quickly, and some people like to be surprised. So, by definition, it's a spoiler.

He could be fun. I think I've only seen him in Neverwhere. (And there's only one "t" in his name.)
