Sad news, man.  (http://sfscope.com/2009/01/realms-of-fantasy-closing.html)

The magazine wasn't carrying a large inventory, she said, although she did note that they'd recently purchased a number of stories which now won't be published.

I wonder if there's a way Escape Pod or Podcastle can provide a venue for these stories.

Probably depends on the contract the authors had with RoF. I'm sure they can, they'll just have to wait until said contract expires (or maybe there will be some special contract adjustments...I dunno how any of this works).

What a bummer, though.

There's usually an extreme circumstances clause that would break the contract if one of the signatories goes out of business or declares bankruptcy. In this case it looks like the company that publishes RoF still exists, so it probably wouldn't be tripped.

There's a 2-year "non publication" termination clause in the RoF contract, so if Sovereign doesn't release the contracted stories immediately (which I suspect they will), the writers will be able to resell them anyway after the clause kicks in.

Crap.  I'm sure Sovereign will do the decent thing with the contracts and let them go.  Really, what would be the point to hang on to them?

Good magazines don't die, they just go wonky for a bit and get sold. Same thing happened to JPG last month.

Also, wasn't McSweeney's coming to an end at some point in the last year? Because they're accepting submissions three quarterly issues in advance.

I don't remember exactly if they were calling it quits, but I do remember they were having some terrible financial issues and were trying to stay afloat.

Deja vu all over again (http://www.rofmag.com/2010/10/18/a-note-from-the-publisher/#more-3940).

Thanks to Bill for the heads-up.

I feel like we're in a Monty Python sketch.  "I'm not dead yet!"

Seriously.

Has there been any discussion on who will edit? I haven't seen anything from Shawna McCarthy or Doug Cohen...

The SF scope article says rumors indicate the staff will stay the same--but there's no official confirmation yet.  I'm...having my doubts about RoF's continued viability, or at least, it's staying a SFWA qualifier and being the same sort of magazine.  But of course, if Shawna stays, she'll doubtless buy the same kind of thing.
