Title: V day the geek way
Post by: MacArthurBug on February 11, 2009, 05:32:40 PM
To show my geeky love this year, I'm planning the following

A custom made Tardis  door card for my elder girl with the slogan "Who loves ya babe" and a pic of her favorite Doctor.
A very very pink princess card for the younger (Le sigh she's still SUCH a girl)
Breakfast with cheesy heart shaped blueberry pancakes and a sci-fi movie marathon of three hours until the hubs treats me to a tour of the Gem and mineral show so I can add to my ever growing amber collection.

So kids, what do you have planned for Valentines day Saturday or do you think it's a total hallmark cop out?

I have violent hatred of this holiday.  If I actually need a day on the calendar to remind me to love someone, I'm with the wrong person.  This will be an absolutely normal saturday for me.

Ah, good. I'm not the only geek who has a pink princess daughter. Although she perked up when I told her there was a princess in Star Wars, though. (Not that she can watch it anytime soon, but still.)

Also, I think we should all conspire to do something nice for Russell on Valentine's Day  ;D

You and my wife think alike.  For me last birthday she asked me what I wanted to do.  I said nothing.  She invited over 8 people for a surprise birthday poker evening.  She said, "Since you didn't want to do anything, I decided to do something."

Stupid holiday.

Tracie and I were married on Feb 10th so that sometime around then we could have a night out and combine the events.

On a related note, her coworkers are jealous of her.  I send her flowers at work a lot.  Ladies that aren't in her department will stop by to see if there are new flowers.

Guys, take it from me, SENDING FLOWERS IS ALWAYS A GOOD THING!

It's a trap!  You can't win.  You're stuck now.  If you stop sending them as often, you'll get, "you never send me flowers anymore."  If you don't normally send flowers and then you do, it's, "Why are you sending flowers?  What did you do?"

when we were still courting the hubs did this for me- flowers small goofy gifts, my favorite was a balloon bouquet. Usually waiting for me at my work station when I arrived. It was spectacular.  He still does this some years, not always on V day often it's a random "look! I found you something so shiny you'll giggle all day"

Nash

I'd take mild offense if it weren't slightly true. Last week I asked hubs why he didn't make up silly songs for me anymore. :P
Then realized I was being SUCH a girl and got over it. It may well be a trap but I still do little romantic things for my man- I put notes in his lunch. I have since the first day I made lunches for him, and  6 years later I still do. I know he treasures them as once while he was going on deploy and I was putting some last minute things in his bag I found a small Ziploc baggie with about 20 of my little love notes inside.  I never have told him I found them, as he never told me he kept them.

I vote Admiral Ackbar icon for Nash during his next reincarnation/retcon poll.

Here ya go: Neil Gaiman's How To Talk To Girls At Parties - at  http://www.neilgaiman.com.nyud.net:8080/p/Cool_Stuff/Short_Stories/How_To_Talk_To_Girls_At_Parties

An excerpt:
Quote
We reached the end of the road and turned into a narrow street of terraced houses. Everything looked very still and empty in the Summer's evening. "It's all right for you," I said. "They fancy you. You don't actually have to talk to them." It was true: one urchin grin from Vic and he could have his pick of the room.

"Nah. S'not like that. You've just got to talk."

The times I had kissed my sister's friends I had not spoken to them. They had been around while my sister was off doing something elsewhere, and they had drifted into my orbit, and so I had kissed them. I do not remember any talking. I did not know what to say to girls, and I told him so.

They're just girls," said Vic. "They don't come from another planet."

Heh-heh-heh.  ;D
One of my all-time favourite short stories in audio.
