Title: EP012: Clean Up Your Room!
Post by: Russell Nash on September 17, 2009, 07:18:32 AM
EP012: Clean Up Your Room! (http://escapepod.org/2005/07/28/ep012-clean-up-your-room/)

By Laura Anne Gilman (http://www.sff.net/people/lauraanne.gilman).
Read by Mur Lafferty (of Geek Fu Action Grip (http://www.geekfuactiongrip.com/)).

“Jessy, put that away and come eat breakfast. You won’t get anything useful done on an empty stomach.” The voice was the usual gender-neutral computer-generated drone, and yet it sounded different to her this morning. Obviously, the tone modifiers Gregory had suggested were working, too. That was going to be a selling point for everyone yelping about the dehumanization of home life. In a few generations, they’d be able to personalize the voice, maybe even to customer order.

Rated G. Contains intense maternal nagging and disturbing chorework. May not be suitable for some adults.

This story was quite funny, even though it was a bit predictable in the Mom program taking over the house.  It's similar to Douglas Adams storylines about Real People Personalities (RPP) that are really mostly just a pain in the ass.  The protagonist seemed entirely too slow on the uptake though.  I can understand being surprised the first time that the program does something weird, but then every time a new weird thing happened she'd immediately say "but that's impossible" as if she hadn't already seen it do "impossible" things.

Where was the ending  ???  ??? I enjoyed the story right up until the end, where it just... stopped, nothing really happened.
