Title: Anarchy in SF
Post by: lowky on October 26, 2009, 01:13:33 AM
Is your SF too organized? are you craving a little chaos?
Then Check out the Seattle Anarchist Book Fair SF book list. (http://www.seattleanarchist.org/)

Actually from looking at the site, it looks like it would have been an interesting panel to attend.
Quote
Beyond The Dispossessed: Anarchism and Science Fiction They discussed major works of anarchist and leftist science fiction, and anarchist themes in science fiction and the relationship between social movements and science fiction and the transformative power of speculative literature.

Mod (Heradel): I'm guessing the original link that you had was not the one you meant it to be, so I'm just subbing in the general website for the book fair since a quick google isn't turning up the book list.

included here is the original link (http://nwsfsnews.blogspot.com/2009/10/i-wanna-read-sf-anarchy.html).  Must have accidentally copied and pasted in mid post and lost my link.  This is why scientists say we are less efficient when multitasking.

Pah, scientists. What have they ever done for us? I efficiently multitask time all.

Edit: Having looked at the list, I'm not really sure Little Brother is anarchical. I mean, at the end of the book they're using the legal system to prosecute the tyrannical, which you don't get much in anarchies. It's not huge on government, and while Doctorow is pretty radically left, I don't really think I've ever seen him argue for the abolishment of government. Being against a bad government isn't the same as being against all of them.

Shocked that R.A. Wilson's ILLUMINATUS isn't on there - granted, it's parody while also being fantasy and sci-fi, but still...

Robert Shea might be a little put out at you calling it "Wilson's ILLUMINATUS" since they worked on it together  ;)  But I agree, on a list of "anarchic SF" it certainly belongs.
