Thought everyone might get a giggle out of this - so much for Steampunk, howabout some LeisurePunk (uggh, reminds me of why I hate the term Steampunk) from the 50's?
(other choices GoogiePunk - look it up, or PopuluxePunk, or CoctailPunk)

"This could happen to YOU"
Definite favorite, right there!

To be fair, it would also be happening to those beneath you.

I love the detail of the little dog being flung to its (presumed) death - it COULD happen to you, but it certainly is happening to that dog....
-
I dunno looks like the dog is the only one leaping toi safty! These were great, thanks for sharing!

aaah that was great. "No, Popular Mechanics, that cannot happen to me."
-
Ouch! My stomach hurts from laughing!!
My favourite has to be the Dyno-Wheel Motor Bus -- an instant WTF??? picture if ever I've seen one. Also the propeller-driven skimobile. I mean seriously, even if ordered, would you go anywhere NEAR something with a high-speed prop right behind you?

It's happened to me while playing Grand Theft Auto 3.

Swamp boats?

Swamp boats?
See now, that propeller is facing the right way -- away from you, not right up yer arse!

But what fun is that.

I think the "skimobile" prop would also have to be facing away from you, if it's going to be propelling you forward. How's that different from the swamp airboat?

Like this then?

Yeah, real "protective". ::)
That's from http://blog.modernmechanix.com/
I wish I could find a video of that B&W film clip of the guy with skates and a rocket pack. As soon as he lights it up he's on spinning on his ass and trying to slap out the flames on his pants. That never gets old. ;D

It doesn't matter, as long as the prop blades are twisted in the right direction, and the engine with it.
I've flown in one of these:
A Cessna 336 "Skymaster", aka "Push-Pull", with a propellor at both ends. Very popular as the smallest twin-engine commercial craft.

Well, now you're just bragging :D
And yes, I am jealous...

PopSci just put all their archives online for free: http://www.popsci.com/archives
And actually having looked at the "THIS COULD HAPPEN TO YOU" cover, most boring explanation for the cover ever. Apparently, it's an illustration of the fact that driving at 30mph is as dangerous as driving on the roof of a building.
Bad PopSci. Bad.
