Title: Best EP episode by topic/category/theme
Post by: Galdyn on April 14, 2010, 01:53:32 PM
I would like to know from you guys what you think the best or your favorite or most powerful episode that deals with the issue of discrimination of any kind and how to live in that environment. Personally I have listened to so many of EP episodes that I honestly cannot remember which deals with this subject or not. Or if I have a story in mind I don't know the title.

So, what is the best or your favorite or the most powerful EP episode that deals with racism?

discrimination or racism? You say "discrimination of any kind" then you say "racism"... Which is it? I have suggestions, but it depends on your answer.

Summer in Paris, Light from the Sky (http://escapepod.org/2009/02/07/ep187-summer-in-paris-light-from-the-sky/)

Next question.

well in the science fiction world discrimination can be a whole lot more than it is in real life. So, discrimination of any kind, racism was an example. Sorry didn't make that clear.

Next question.

Ok, since you want another question. Best or favorite EP episode for classic sci-fi (spaceships and space battles etc.).

I was actually being facetious there. But okay.

Actually, if you're looking for more general discrimination, I found "I'll Gnaw Your Bones, the Manticore Said" (http://podcastle.org/2009/04/15/pc048-ill-gnaw-your-bones-the-manticore-said/) over on PodCastle very effective. A very good use of a protagonist who simply doesn't realize their own prejudice.

All the Union Dues series deal with being excluded from society - some more than others, but it's a running theme. Haven't listened to any of them in a while, so someone else would have to point out the ones that talk about it explicitly.

Barnaby in Exile, and 43 Antaran Dynasties - Mike Resnick
Kin - Bruce McAllister
The Clockwork Atom Bomb - Dominic Green

And the one with the lizard king's tail, I can't for the life of me remember the title or the author (even enough to make sense of the wiki list, can someone else add that one? Grrrr... I'd like to listen to that one again too!)

Are you talking about Greg van Eekhout's Authorwerx, Jeff? Or something else?

Other possibilities would be "Arties Aren't Stupid" by Jeremiah Tolbert, "N-Words" by Ted Kosmatka, or "The Hastillian Weed" by Ian Creasey.

From PodCastle's backlog, I'd also recommend:

"Shard of Glass" by Alaya Dawn Johnson
"The Fiddler of Bayou Teche" by Delia Sherman

(Said like Number 24) I don't know... I can't remember the title or author at all (like I've had it ice-cream-scooped out of my head) but I remember really liking the story and how the lizard king guy got one over on the others who discounted who he was because of what he was... (trying to not spoil things).

What the heck was that one called?? GRRRRR BRAINNNNNNNNN HUURRRRTSSSSSSSS!!

I think it was just called "The King's Tail". By Constance Cooper, according to iTunes.

I was thinking that, but I always saw the king as a lion, not a lizard, like Jeff said.  I'll have to listen to that one again.

See that, it hides by being in plain sight! Thanks Tinroof, that's the one!

He snaps his tail off to foil pursuers.  Not the most lion-like trait I've ever heard of...

"N-Words" by Ted Kosmatka.....

This was my introduction to EP and I've been hooked ever since and am getting into all EA episodes.
You made me buy my 1st Ipod.
