Title: Name My Wedding Tables!
Post by: ElectricPaladin on July 09, 2010, 02:16:11 AM
So, my fiancee and I are both enormous fantasy geeks. Our upcoming wedding has a beach/fantasy theme, including a castle-shaped wedding cake and a cake-topper that looks like the two of us, with swords and battered wedding wear, fighting back-to-back (alas, she wouldn't let me include tiny plastic monsters; this is probably for the best as the top of our cake just isn't big enough for that not to look busy). It's going to be awesome.

Anyway, we've decided to name our tables after fantasy places, and I'm here trolling (like the net, not the asshole) for suggestions. We've already decided on Lothlorien (a dear friend of my fiancee lived in a Berkeley coop by the same name) and Tortall (my fiancee is an enormous Pierce fan), but we're probably going to have upwards of 200 guests, and that means more than twenty tables.

So... suggestions?

Benden (or Pern). Camelot (yeah, I'm not sure about that one but it is a magnificent example of a fantastical place).

Tar Valon (Wheel of Time)

Narnia?  Might not go over too well at a Jewish wedding...

Discworld?  Or Ankh-Morpork specifically?

I'm gonna second The Dreaming and Narnia.

Hogsmeade.

 New Crobuzon, maybe? Nessus? Ambergis?

Whatever the case, I think this is an incredibly cool idea.

Here's a thought. Why don't you sit the future mothers-in-law at a table called "Mordor"... :D

P.S. Just kidding, I really do like my mother-in-law.

And congratulations, btw!

Verral and Lupan (McMullen's "Moonworlds" stories)

London Below (Gaiman's "Neverwhere")

Armada (building upon the Mieville idea)

Majipoor (Silverberg's "Majipoor" Chronicles, which are more like fantasy than SF)

Storybook Village (the kids table -- from "Super Why")

Dare I even suggest - Dinotopia?

(diving for cover)

Did someone say something about a table for the in-laws? :D

I think most weddings have that. Usually, the bridge and groom also sit there.

Mining mythology and legend seems like a source for a few.  Asgard, Valhalla (drinking hall of the glorious dead), Midgard (that's Earth to the Norse - actually means "middle earth"), Olympus, Shangri-La, Avalon, Hy-Brazil, Atlantis, Camelot.

And let's see, from fiction in general: Oz, The Emerald City, Kandor (Superman's bottled city), Lankhmar (Fafard and Grey Mouser), Neverland (the kid's table?), Wonderland, Hyboria (Conan), Barsoom (John Carter of Mars), Pyrdain (The Book of Three, also an old name for Wales), The Bazaar on Deva (MythAdventures), Melniboné (Elric), Earthsea, Stormhold (Stardust), Narnia.

And of course tons of places from the Lord of the Rings - I won't even start.  I could also go on about The Song of Ice and Fire, or even Harry Potter.

I really enjoyed those books when I was younger.

I think The Dreaming is a good suggestion, mainly because the germ of it translates without needing to know the backstory like you would with Midgard or Ankh-Morpork.

To add one from myth (which is getting harder as this thread gets longer, I'm wracking my brain) Sheol would probably fit in along with the other after-life tables. And if you do have a table of people you wished weren't there, Tartarus or Tophet would be the place so long as none of them studied ancient greek or early judaism. (Ha, my thesis is actually proving good for something.)

Though really, it's a wedding, so Elysium would be a good one, along with the Islands of the Blessed, the Gray Havens/Lindon, and The West (must be to the actual west of Middle-Earth Table).

This is really becoming a great list! I keep wracking my brain but every time I remember a good one someone beats me to it! I really want to know the final picks!

And don't forget the bride and groom can find ample seating at the Utopia table.
