Title: Can't think of the name of that book
Post by: clarkie604 on August 24, 2010, 05:55:19 PM
I've been listening to PodCastle since the beginning and Escape Pod and Pseudopod since before that, but I never checked out the forums until the Flash Fiction contest.  It has definitely been awesome, and I've become addicted to reading every comment on the whole forum (I need to get back to work).

Lately I've been trying to remember the name of a book I started reading in elementary school, and I thought the best way in the world to find it would be to ask all the sci-fi geniuses on the Escape Artists forums.  So that's how I ended up here writing this long post.

Here is what I remember:  It's a sci-fi book about a city under some kind of clear dome.  Pretty specific, huh?  It was 5th grade to it had to be published before 1989.  I'm pretty sure it was a Newbery Award or Honor winner, although I've looked through Newbery lists and can't find it.  I'm also pretty sure an early-teen boy was the main character.

Ring a bell for anybody?  I think this is one of the first sci-fi books I ever read, except maybe A Wrinkle in Time.  It's especially memorable because I was about half-way through and really enjoying it when I lost the book.  I got in huge trouble with my mom, my teacher and the librarian, plus, I never got to finish it because I never wanted to bring the topic up with the librarian again to see if she got a new copy.

Thanks in advance.

Are you possibly thinking about the Tripods Trilogy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Tripods), by John Christopher? The second book, The City of Gold and Lead takes place inside a domed city and has a teen boy as protagonist.

If so, I would definitely recommend reading the whole trilogy. I have fond memories of it from my school days...

That was my first association as well.  I ordered that out of one of those grade school book catalogs.  I think it was the first SF books I ever read.s

Reading through the wikipedia I thought this sounded familiar. Then I realized I read the serialized adaptaion in Boys Life. I may have to put this on the purchase pile.

Thanks.  I'm not sure that's it - but the whole series is now on my list to read.
