Title: Escape Pod Authors that Make You Squee
Post by: eytanz on December 06, 2010, 10:10:03 AM
Have you ever been watching your episode download, and then realized the story was written by one of your favorite EA authors and done a fist-pump in the air? Or, you know, grinned and thought, "Awesome!"

So, who are the authors that make you squee?

Eugie Foster and Kij Johnson.

Funny, I tend to do that with readers more than with authors.

I will ditto Scattercat on Eugie Foster.

For the squee, I would add Greg van Eekhout, Jeffery R. DeRego, Dave Thompson, Ken Scholes, David D. Levine, and Mike Resnick to the list.  Also Mur Lafferty (and that was before she ran the place  ;) )

Honorable mentions are: Tim Pratt, Will McIntosh, Ted Chaing, and Paul di Philipo

Ted Chiang: I hold him in awe, enough said.
Paul di Fillippo: The man's got some screws loose, but in a way that's so endearing.
Scott Sigler: Because he's awesome.
Eugie Foster: I like her science fiction even more than her fantasy, and that's high praise.
Will McIntosh: Because he gets to me, every time.
Tim Pratt: I figured nobody else would mention him, and he deserves at least some love.
Jonathon Sullivan: Because he's awesome too.
Jeffrey R. DeRego: Because I'm always happy to return to the Union-verse.

None. I might see an author and think they're more likely to deliver a good story but honestly, none.

As far as authors on Escape Pod in the last year, only Tim Pratt and Eugie Foster.  Which is a bit weird, because I don't get excited about Eugie Foster on Podcastle, but I do for Escape Pod.  I don't know what it is, maybe "When Shakko Did Not Lie" ruined her on Podcastle for me, but I just don't get as excited about her for pure Fantasy things.

Tim Pratt I love in any setting though.

As far as the other podcasts, Tina Connolly is getting to be a big favorite, and I was pretty excited to see Nick Mamatas on Podcastle (he was on Pseudopod last year).

But I think a lot of the best stories come from authors who aren't pseudo-regulars on the Pods, and some of whom I've never heard of before.

There are mostly just two authors whose name i recognize as something special, Tim Pratt and Greg van Eekhout both have written some of my favorite escape artists stories.

Also i used to love the Jennifer Pelland stories that were read by Deborah Green, although we havent had any of those for a while.

Not an author but a presenter. As far as I'm concerned Mr Norm Sherman Esquire IS the man.

He sounds just as smooth and as smart as I think I do after hitting the bong.

Amal El-Mohtar is a very talented author, and I enjoy their settings that often have an alternative worldview, which I almost always enjoy.

Additionally, I have to mention Marjorie James, for the epic Death Trap stories.  If any more of these show up in the slush, I am begging for them to be broadcast.

Tim Pratt for double sure.
Also Amal El-Mohtar...I'd love to hear more Ted Chiang but I usually read most of his stuff in text form as soon as I can.
And more Union Dues!
