Am I the only one shivering in anticipation for this? It premiers tonight, and I will be putting my lemon cakes in the oven in just a few hours!
Yay!

I thought it was great :)
Quite a few minor changes, but to be expected when doing an adaptation.
It was, I believe, the beginning of a new era for fantasy on TV. This was no Legend Of The Seeker! ;D

I heard it was... how shall I say... uninhibited in its depiction of clothing or lack thereof.

it's a good pilot, i'm just worried it might be another walking dead situation where the first episode raises expectations and then the series horribly disappoints.
-
My TiVo recorded the frist episode as a "suggestion". I deleted it unwatched: I don't receive HBO.
SRSLY It pisses me off no end that I have to keep deleting these blocks of dead air from channels I don't get. You'd think the software could take that into account when making suggestions.

You're the first person I've heard say that about 'Walking Dead.' My friends seem to be enjoying it.
(I haven't personally seen it yet, but I look forward to watching it eventually)

FWIW, I'm in the same camp. Thought the first 2-3 episodes were amazing. HATED episode 5-6.
Looking forward to Game of Thrones coming out on DVD, though!
-
it could be familiarity with the story before it was made into a television series. the pilot was very faithful to the plot & feel of the comic, the finale wasn't even close.

As a fan of the books, I loved the first episode. I do wonder though, how much is lost on someone who isn't already familiar with the world. The books have time to detail things out. The show is putting those details on screen, but not telling you what they mean. I'd like to hear an opinion from someone to whom the show is their first exposure to Game of Thrones. Would they be a little lost? Bored? Though I don't think anyone would be able to say it isn't pretty...
-
I've been polling my friends and coworkers who have not read the series but who saw Sundays episode...so far, all glowing reviews and no trouble with the characters. We'll see how that changes as the plot and number of characters progress ;D
-
the first book wasn't that bad (i don't think) and they could easily get a couple seasons out of each book, depending on how much they include.
-
Looks like they did well enough with the first episode to renew it for Season 2: A Clash of Kings. (http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/04/19/game-of-thrones-renewed/)
ETA: Linkage

Admin note: This thread has been split into speculation about the series when it was in development (http://forum.escapeartists.net/index.php?topic=3400.0), and this thread for conversation about the show now that it's airing.

I thought this first episode was okay... It moved really fast, I felt a lot was lost in translation. Also, I never pictured the white walkers as the predator monster. I kinda pictured slow moving Nazgul-like things. And wasn't it the old guy who was found as a deserter and killed? (not like that really matters in the end)
I thought a lot of the 'who's who' of characters wasn't fleshed out enough... I mean, I knew who was who, but someone who hasn't read the book? So many characters, so rarely named. And that stupid scene with Arya asking/telling who was who when the king showed up was the dumbest way of doing it.
I did, however, like the depictions of most of the characters, especially Tyrion and Cersei. The character I didn't like was Khal Drogo. Braids instead of bells? That doesn't get the same idea across... he can't steal his enemy's braids and add them to his own!
Oh and that dead dire wolf looked insanely fake. Like 1980's fantasy movie fake.
Still, excited for the next episode! :P

I've watched the first two episodes with marginal exposure to the books. I've been harangued for years to read them and couldn't make it more than 50 pages in. The abusively large cast of characters who are not particularly likeable drove me off. After my first reading section I couldn't keep anyone straight and couldn't have coherently explained to someone else what happened, I put the book down.
The screen writers have done a great job. Film allows the easy focus of showing who the critical characters are, who the supporting characters are, and allows a quick introduction of everyone without being burdensome. Watching the miniseries actually has me considering picking up the books again. It'll be easier to focus knowing who's who going in and I'll be able to experience some of the richness and depth of the tale.
With regards to The Walking Dead, I enjoyed those as well with no exposure to the source material. I missed the second episode, which I've heard is phenomenal. Starting in episode three, it got a bit less action-y and more soap opera-y. I think they missed the balance of zombies to talking as the series progressed.
-
four episodes in and i like what they're doing with it.
i've been watching it with people that haven't read the books and i made a habit of filling in the details since the show needs to skim over a lot of background. now, i'm beginning to trust that the show will fill them all in when pacing allows it.
Sansa's friendship with the butcher's boy, the meaning of Jon Snow's name, the myth behind Targaryen's blood line. all covered in good time.
-
Oh snap the fourth episode was awesome. They pack so much into each episode but really don't lose enough to make me annoyed!
-
this series was solid through and through.
i hope they keep this going for years to come and it heralds an age of quality tv fantasy.

Here's a rundown of Season 2's new actors (and characters) (http://tvovermind.zap2it.com/cable/hbo/game-of-thrones/game-thrones-meet-faces-season-2/86984)

soooo cool! almost everyone is exactly how I've pictured them! Intrigued about the addition of the new Lannister character, but I trust it won't deviate too much. I really like what they did with the first season, especially with Renly/Lorras. It adds a whole new dimension to how I read the characters in the books, which I can't say for MANY MANY other book adaptations.
-
To comment on both: I watched Walking Dead before borrowing the graphic novels. My wife and I enjoyed the series. After reading them, I see how unfaithful the series has been to the books, which is a shame. The books are SO grim, though, that it may have been too much of a risk for the executives to take.
As for Game of Thrones, I have read the books but my wife hasn't. She enjoyed the series okay, but the pacing was too slow for her, which I get. I have thoroughly enjoyed the series, though.

It's getting fuzzy for me now, since I watched them a few months ago, but I generally liked the differences between the book and the show, I think Lyssa is better as a harpy-ish looking woman than a frumpy-ish looking woman. Fits the "bird in a nest" metaphor better. I liked the more outward display of the Renly/Loras relationship.

The new season has started! The first episode of season 2 seemed a bit all over the place to me, but I'm digging the casting for Melisandre and Stannis & Davos seemed good for what little we saw of them. I think the problem is that there are too many locations and plotlines at this point. In the beginning of GoT all the Starks and Lannisters are at Winterfell and Dany is across the sea, so we can introduce new plotlines all together. Now all the new characters were at Dragonstone, but there were new plots to prepare for the season in King's Landing, Beyond the Wall, Across the sea too.
I'm hoping as the season moves along, they diverge even a bit further from the books and focus on one or two plotlines per episode with just a touch or two on the others, keeping more of the shuffling episode-to-episode rather than scene-to-scene. The 5 seconds of Arya we saw in Ep. 1 indicates they might go this way. Here's to hoping Ep. 2 is the Arya stabby-hour (well more likely ep. 6 or 7 but who knows).
-
Exciteeeeeeeed! :)
Stannis isn't perfect... he's a bit of a weenie, IMO. But whatever, Mellisandre is perfect!
-

Ha! I love Arya so damn much.
I loved the premier of season 2. I thought the intros of the Dragonstone characters was as well done as could be for the small screen. Stannis IS a weenie, but he's a weenie in the books too, in my opinion. I dislike him immensely, the douche. People are supposed to bend, for goodness sakes.
I'm really looking forward to the Iron Islands. Wheee!!!!!!
-
I never realized from the books that Balon Greyjoy's fireplace is the BEST THING on the Iron Islands. I'm liking how they are cutting back on showing as much Dany or Stannis, hopefully Dany they each get bigger chunks for more important stuff. Particularly Quarth, I'd like to see a whole show about Dany, although it will probably just be half in the 9th, half in the 10th episodes or something.
Glad to see they are cutting back on Arya's wandering around the wilderness, more time for Harrenhall. Do you guys think we're missing the impact of all this war on the common folk though? That is my one real criticism of the show so far.
-
I kept wanting that... thing... to happen to that... person... in the last episode. I don't remember when it happens, exactly, but once they introduced Brienne I remembered it was coming. I REALLY want to see how they do that in the show! So psyched.
The war's impact on the commoners doesn't really come into play all that much until Jon has to deal with the nearby town/spoiler omitted. That, and when Cercei has to deal with the commoners as well. Even then, however, it always takes the back burner to the struggles of nobility. They are all too wrapped up in their own fights to consider the peasants most of the time. Martin makes sure to talk about the commoners, but it's always from the perspective of people who kind of don't care about them :P
-
Arya's story sees a good deal of the havoc caused by Gregor Clegane and his troops in this part of the books, that is what I was worried about with them cutting to her capture so quickly. Also Tyrion's investigations in King's Landing, although that goes with Cersei I suppose. I guess I'm saying that although Feast focussed on that kind of stuff a lot, it did come up earlier with some of the storylines in this season. Point taken that there are a lot more opportunities though.
I found myself anxiously awaiting THING, as I don't remember when it happens either. I'm interested, but worried how much of their budget will be blown. Also, I admit to kind of liking the state of affairs before thing, I don't want to move on yet. I am really digging the actress for Brienne by the way.
-
omg omg omg the thing is totally happening next episode
-
Watched the whole second season last week, and I have to say that I'm LOVING this adaptation. Obviously there are some deviations from the books (I've read the first three so far) but no more than seems reasonable to me. Can't wait for next season!
omg omg omg the thing is totally happening next episode
For the life of me, I can't figure out which thing you're talking about?
-
It's harder looking back when you don't know what episode was airing next week from when he posted that.
All I have to say is that sometimes when a crazy fire priestess and a king love each other very much, a ship's captain comes and brings them a shadow.
For the life of me, I can't figure out which thing you're talking about?

Ahhh, yes, that thing! They did that really well! Also, that reminds me that I forgot to say that I love Ser Davos and I think they cast him perfectly. :)
-
This season was superb. Loved it. Except, I have to wonder where Talisa came from and what happened to Jeyne??
-
(I was talking about the shadow baby and Renly)
I absolutely looooved this season. I'm very pleased with where they are taking it and how they are adapting it.

new season three cast menmbers: http://io9.com/5925957/game-of-thrones-reveals-new-cast-members-for-season-3 (http://io9.com/5925957/game-of-thrones-reveals-new-cast-members-for-season-3)
Jojen is PERFECT.
-
Yay! There's going to be a season 3!
Diana Riggs as the Queen of Thorns is fantastic!
-
This has just made my day; I'd completely given up hope on ever seeing Jojen or Meera, and they are BOTH in Season 3! I had just resigned myself to the "Osha replaces all the characters" bandwagon. I do like the actress for Osha, but I'm glad she won't be having greendreams.
-
I'm a subscriber to a popular theory about Jon Snow's parentage, one in which the Reed family should be the only living people who know the truth, so I was also worried that Jojen and Meera's roles would be reassigned. Whew! That theory may just be true!!!

Paul Kaye as Thoros of Myr seems off, I think he is too young. I always pictured Thoros as older. will have to wait and see. Come on March lol
