i find it interesting to know how other people discovered something I know and love.
So how did you discover EP? Podcast directory? Recommendation from friend?
For me, it was Cory Doctorow's podcast, after Craphound appeared on EP.
I was pretty much hooked after that.
-
I heard it from Scott Sigler's podcast after his first story was on EP.
-
Steve sent me an email that said, this is crazy and probably won't come to much... Wanna help?
-
Air Out My Shorts :P
-
I found it on iTunes.
-
Link on the side bar at Geek Foo, thanks Mur!

That is the exact same way I discovered EP. How funny.

Same for me though I've stopped listening to AOMS since then(I've got alot of other stuff going on and alot of podcasts to listen to so maybe I'll get back into it again later).
-
I only came to it once it got boingboinged *latecome*

Yup, that's how I found EP too. :)
-
i had a job ,
it involved taking a big metal thing off a rack ,
putting it in a box,
putting the box on a different rack
repeat for 9 howers
this mental torture continued for a few days before i noticed alot of the other Epsilon semi-morons had personal radios and the like.
Right then i thort to my self.
a quick search later i found escape pod, and from escape pod the half dozen other podcasts i now listen to on a regular bases,
-
I don't remember exactly, but I think it was through J.C. Hutchins's Seventh Son, which is one of the first podcasts I found after finally getting an ipod.
-
I have positively no idea. I can't remember for the *life* of me.
-
I started listening to EP after PP (puesdopod) which I got to form scott sigler.
-
Yahoo's podcast directory. I believe I typed "science fiction" into the search engine. I was actually looking for podcasts of old radio shows. The first story I heard was Barnaby in Exile, which is still one of my favorites.
-
I found Escape Pod just browsing through iTunes. The first story I listened to was "The Trouble with Death Traps" (Episode 7). All other podcasts I subscribed to at the same time either died or got stupid. This is the podcast I've been listening to the longest. I guess that says something about the quality.
-
by the way i came in at episode 22, Don Ysidro, which i thought was more than stellar, still one of my favorites, although not top 5
-
I was clued in to EP by my brother on Christmas '06.
I got hooked then, then by the fiction contest, and with the recent gifting of an Ipod for my birthday, I'm now working my way thru the backlog.
-
I believe it was searching for "science fiction" on iTunes.
Escape Pod and Ask A Ninja are the only two podcasts that survived the move to a new country and busier schedule. Still haven't gotten up to date with the EP I missed while I was travelling. It compels me to exercise daily.
-
I discovered EP when I searched the Podcast directory... At the time, it had been my first PodCast [still is. The only other one I listen to is Quirks and Quarks, by the CBC] and I thought highly of it. The first 'Pod episode that I had the privilege to listen to, was "The Alchamista".
Now, I think of Escape Pod as Asimov once stated it:
"The Vault was furnished with considerable more than six chairs, as though a larger company was expected. Hardin noted that thoughtfully and seated himself wearily in a corner just as far from the other five as possible".
- The Foundation by Isaac Asimov, Chapter 7, P. 89
Now, I know that there are more than six people waiting for the next Escape Pod episode, but the way that anticipation builds up is amazing! But what I mean is, whenever a new episode comes out, the Vault opens, and Mr. Eley is our podcasting Hari Seldon. He predicts the future. In every way imaginable.
-
I learned about EP from Mur's I Should Be Writing, which I heard about from The Signal, which I subscribed to because I'd just seen Serenity, which I saw because I caught the trailer before Batman Begins and it reminded me of this great series of which I saw two epidodes before Fox cancelled it. Or something like that.
-
I was browsing a list of short fiction podcasts when I came upon Pseudopod. I started listening to that, and when Escape Pod was mentioned, I had to check it out. I like horror, but sci fi/fantasy is my mostest favoritest genre.
-
My friend, John, urged me to check EP out, and maybe submit some stories to it. The second Union Dues story was the first one I heard, and I've been hooked since.
And now any time science fiction comes up at work (which it does a LOT), I spread the word!
-
I heard about EP from an NPR podcast/interview with Mr. Eley. Really don't remember much of the interview, but I was intrigued enough to write down the URL and came in around episode 20.

Wow! Someone heard that! Huzzah -- I'm happy to hear it. >8->

Was it recorded? I'd like to hear it, and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

It was a small part of a larger story about amateur audiobooks. Click on the "Listen" button near the top, just under the title.

Hey Steve,
Was this the only place it was broadcast? I seem to recall there was a longer interview with you and one of the regular male hosts.

On NPR? I don't think so, unless you're talking about Jesse Thorn and The Sound of Young America (http://www.maximumfun.org/). That's on some public radio stations, and it's a great show, but I'm not sure how "regular" it could be considered. >8->

But it's still amazing.

That's how I found EP, too. (Hope you're still happy! ;) ) I started listening to NPR podcasts because I listened to NPR News on the radio for years. So, I heard it through the podcast of that story. I was washing the dishes and had to go find a pen & paper to write it down. The first non-news podcast I listened to was EscapePod.
Not sure which was my first story, since I downloaded several right off the bat. It was either one of De Rego's Union Dues stories or "Connie, Maybe". I was instantly hooked.

So, the upshot for all you marketing majors out there is: Marketing-shmarketing; if it rocks it'll pop!
(Unless the network kills it after only 14 episodes. :'( )

That makes the network look evil. I mean, depending on the network [ ;D ], that can be true or not.

Oh, I think everyone involved in the Firefly thread knows which network I mean! I'm just waiting for the true "a la carte" viewing to come to fruition... but that's another thread altogether.
-
Uh... magic? Is "magic" an acceptable answer? I remember that I had the first three eps to catch up on but I really don't know where I found the podcast from.
I do also remember SFEley's podcast book review on Slashdot but I don't think that was my in. I don't think. I would have recognized the name if it had appeared after my discovery of EP but, realistically, would I have followed a link from http://slashdot.org (http://slashdot.org)? Can anybody say RTFA?

Say, what are the chances of ever having "Escape Pod Video"? I mean, you have video iPods out there, and we have the "What SF TV series do you love thread" for our market research. Studios are bound to have out-of-print treasures in their vaults that they would be willing to put out on a creative commons license; and there are all of those new producers of fan fic and parody that you see on YouTube.
You would probably need a lot of help getting it going, but we're here for you if you need us! ;D

Podcasting pre-produced content doesn't really fit with my vision of Escape Artists as a publisher. And original video production takes so long and is so complicated that there's really no way I personally would be able to do it on a schedule. I'll leave it to Earl and Stranger Things.
That's not to say that there's no opportunity in podcasting the stuff you're talking about, though. If you decide to do it, I would be happy to advise and publicize. >8->

I'll let you know; but for now, I'm only looking for part time work!

I found EP when Clarion West people started talking about how cool it was, which was ... sometime this fall, I think. In virtually every phone conversation I had with him, James Trimarco was telling me that publishing in Escape Pod was one of his goals because of the audience you reach here.
-
I first came across EP on the side bar of ITunes when I was subscribing to Slice of Scifi.
-
The guy who sits next to me at work kept singing its praises. The first ep I heard was "Just Do It", which is good, because it was such a good story.
-
I came across pseudopod first - it's debut was linked to from the Tables of Malcontents blog on Wired, back when it still was in its old incarnation run by Lore Sjoberg. I joined Psuedopod, then after a while decided to check out Escape Pod as well - this was around episode 80, I think, but I went back and listened to some older ones as well (I still have a lot to get through, maybe once I finish my dissertation and have some free time I'll order a disc).
