Title: Day Watch
Post by: Listener on May 22, 2007, 05:17:56 PM
I didn't know there was a sequel to Night Watch.  Apparently there is.  I'm reading it.

Here's what I'm taking away from it so far:

* The author relies too much on musical allegories -- he puts in song lyrics and then characters comment on them.
* The writing is just as good as the first one.
* I love that the Dark Ones are really just libertarians -- they just want the freedom to do as they wish and let everyone else do as they wish also, while the Light Ones are trying to impose order on chaos.
* I get the feeling that the author has made out the Dark Ones as the "permanent" bad guys even though in one story in Day Watch the Light Ones are actually worse than the Dark Ones.  That kind of bugs me a little, but it won't stop me from reading.
* Because the Dark Ones are the bad guys, it was really hard for me to (spoiler) watch Alisa die at the end of the first story after I'd spent so much time getting involved in her character.  On the bright side, though, that whole first story was written in a way that it made the ending that much more painful.

Overall, Night Watch and Day Watch are good.  You may enjoy them.

I've not yet read Nightwatch like I intend to do, but I did see the movie. It's quite good and I'm looking forward to Daywatch to hit the screens.

Yeah, it's going to be out on Friday in limited theatres. None close to me, though. :(

I didn't see Day Watch (don't think it was playing here at any time I could go) but I just finished watching Night Watch.

I like how the scriptwriter put together the first two stories (Svetlana/Egor || Olga).  Saved a lot of time and explanation.  The acting was decent, though I disagree with who they chose to play Anton.  I think that until the end Zabulon was poorly-portrayed, but maybe that was the point.  As for the twist ending (kind of a minor one as twists go) I think I would've been disappointed if that was how the story had been written, but on screen it worked very well, especially when Zabulon explains to Anton how he himself made Egor turn to the Dark.  Also, when Anton was beating up Zabulon... I wrote a scene like that in a short story some time ago.

Worth renting.
