Title: Cute pet pictures
Post by: Russell Nash on June 18, 2007, 05:56:43 PM
I think the title says it all.  Only rule is the pet needs to be yours.  A description of the breed or any stories about the pet are also very welcome.

Here's mine:

Her name is Ciara.  She's a Eurasian, a German breed.  In this picture she's 16 weeks old.

This is our parakeet. Yes, that's not a canary, but a parakeet.
It's a form of albinoism. Lutino is what it's called, only yellow pigment.
Born about 3 or 4 years ago (I'm not exactly sure at the moment)
He's really adorable, says his own name "Kwikkie" (Quicky, for his speed), and asks for kisses and gives them too.

He has a preference for yellow objects, and loves to play with pens and pencils. (especially yellow ones)
And he absolutely loves it, if we pet him with our thumbs or our noses. He eats macaroni, rice, potatoes, and for a treat he likes to eat peppermint from my mom's tongue.

Normally a parakeet chooses one person and that's his friend, but he has chosen all three of us. :) (my mom, bro and me)
He does have separate games for each of us.
With me, he likes to race. From his cage to the drapes at other side of the living room, and back.
With my mom, it's the game where he can eat peppermint (he has to give a kiss, before he can get the treat)
And he likes to be chased by my brother.

When I was a kid we had a yellow parakeet* too.  He also had a strange attraction to everything yellow.

*The easy way to tell the difference between a yellow parakeet and a canary is the beak.  On a parakeet it's curved and on a canary it's straight.

Leon, occasionally called Leon Dog Wonder.

We got him from the dogs home three years ago. He´d been found with missing teeth, broken ribs and a burst belly button (I wasn´t aware THAT could happen, but there you are). He´s also deathly afraid of cellars and extremely fat women wielding sticks. He has occasional social problems with other dogs. We think he´s probably now about 5 years old and have no idea what breed - Bassett/Beagle/something short-eared is my best guess.

At the dogs home they called him Don Camillo but, based on the idea that I am in NO WAY going to start yelling that around the park, we looked for others. Watching The Godfather, Don Camillo became Don Corleone became Leon.

He likes to be in full body contact with you if possible and buries himself completely under any blanket, managing to wrap the entire thing tightly around his body. A complete schmoozer. He´s easy to train for tricks and I can now get him to do figure eights around my legs. Oh, and he likes sticks. A LOT.

This is Ciara now.  She's five years old and forty pounds.  Quite a stretch from that little tiny thing in the first picture.  If I can direct your atention to her tongue, you'll see why I chose this picture.  Her tongue is mostly purple.  It does have some pink specks, but not too many.

What kind is that?  Has the coloring of a Rott, but doesn't seem to have the bulk.  Also has the coloring of a Doberman, but seems bulkier than that.

Do you have three dogs or three of this breed?

Finally got back home to Michigan from some extended travel for work and was able to post a pic of my pooch.  She's a collie mixed with...something.  I've heard it all: Husky, German Shepherd, Bernese Mountain Dog, hellhound, you name it.  In this picture you can really see the hellhound.  Any thoughts on other breeds?

This is her hanging out with my mom's dog right after she got fixed.  She's about as big as the white one now.

Ha! That's a good pic. Definitely alot of Collie. I can see where the Burnese could come in, I'd almost say not but that blaze of white on the chest with the the rest of the coloring is hard to discount. That fine undercoat looks very Shepard like. The hair type is husky-ish but there's no coloring to support it. I'd say you've most likely got a mut. lol. Which are awesome. All the love, none of the hip dysplasia.

My two pups, both from the same shelter.  The German Shepard mix (Rex) was found tied to a tree in a State Park, no idea how long he had been there.  The Giant Schnauzer mix (Dieter) was abandoned or a runaway and was roaming around at Menards.  They are now best friends living the good life.

This is Tatoosh.  She's my parents' cat.  We all got together for a family camping trip last summer up near Neah Bay, and there was this adorable abandoned cat that had been hanging around the campsite for the past few weeks, mooching off of campers through sheer cuteness and sass.  She also made quick friends with my parents' big black lab, which endeared her further.  She was smart enough to win over my mom, and by doing so got herself a home.  She got the name Tatoosh from the island off Cape Flattery, which was near our campsite and on the way to the fishing grounds.

Now, when time came to get the cat spayed and vaccinated, the old adage, "a free cat is the most expensive cat," was made clear.  We'd assumed she was maybe six months old, from her small size.  The vet took one look and explained that she was about a year old and full of kittens.  Her being both malnourished and very small of frame, having the litter was out.  Well, it turns out a kitty abortion is far more costly than a simple spay (though it was interesting seeing my grandmother's conflicted response, since on the one hand she is very catholic and anti-abortion, but on the other hand hates cats with a burning passion).

This pic isn't in any way posed or shopped.  She really did get a kick out of climbing up in that trellis and glaring down at people.  She's been living with my folks in their new condo in Chicago since they moved out there, but I got to see her when I went out there early in August, and she seems to be her same old self, and even recognized me.

Argh.  I can't believe I haven't posted in this thread before.

This is Yuna.  She's a Cardigan Welsh Corgi, and she's the smartest creature in the house.  (Second only to the rice cooker.)

(Though, to tell you the truth, it didn't occur to me until after we'd already picked out the name.  Could have been subconscious.)

I called the kid.  The kid didn't come, but the dog did.  The dog got the kid's sweatshirt.

She doesn't need the leash at all and gets rather offended when we put it on her, but she's pretty good about it.  After 15 minutes of the kid leading her around she'd had enough and declared a strike.

OK, I give up.

What does Yuna (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yuna) have to do with heterochromia: a difference in coloration in two structures or two parts of the same structure that are normally alike in color.

The character Yuna from Final Fantasy X and X-2 has two different colored eyes.  One's blue, one's green.

Our dog, Jedda. A wire-haired terrier that we also call Sakallı, Turkish for "beardy"!

Our two cats, Nebulous (grey and 23 years old) plus Monster (black and also called "Kitten" by everyone in the family except me). I swear this is the only time I have ever seen Nebulous let Monster get within one metre of her without going nuts. I have never worked out what charm the black one pulled to get that close..

This is Sasha, née TrannyCat:
We were covering Academic Row with chalk to publicize a week of events for a student group, and she walked up and started begging for food--very scrawny, had probably been wandering around on campus trying to stalk squirrels for weeks. There are a couple of strays that hang out on campus. We fed her hamburger, named her TrannyCatfish because we wanted to keep her but we're not allowed pets in campus housing except fish, and eventually she let us pet her and pick her up. A week or so later my roommate found her again and someone he knows who lives off campus was able to take her home and have a vet look at her. He renamed her. Now she is doing great. :D

This is one of my old dogs, Buddy, who died a couple years ago. :( I think he's about one or two in this picture. He's a golden retriever.

I had one other dog and have one other dog, both golden retrievers, but I don't seem to have any pictures of them on my machine.

The Eurasians aren't like Labradors.  They don't eat everything in sight.

You're going to a special hell for that.

That reminds me of the list of amusing "real classified ads" that went around the 'net a few years ago:

"Puppies for sale.  Mother is purebred showdog with impeccable pedigree and a long list of credentials.  Father is also a dog."

Anyway... I'm too tired to figure out embedding, so this is the best I could do... it's a slide show featuring our dog (and our litter of puppies) playing in the leaves:

This is my calico, Meow. I didn't name her, but it's apt. She likes tunnels. Or anything she thinks could be a tunnel. Or anything she can make a tunnel. Like Thaurismunth's sweatshirts, pants, covers, etc. She's adopted him. So far, he hasn't found this as adorable as I do, but he did snap this picture of her inside her down-comforter tunnel.

This is the other little lady, Tiri. Her full name is Tirana, and she's named after a half-demon Empress in a GURPS campaign I've been in for the last several years. Turns out, I've nicknamed her "Cheeses" in Greek, which we haven't had the heart to tell her yet. You can't see it here, but she's a tripod. I found her in pretty bad shape, having been horribly abused and the leg very badly (and unprofessionally) amputated. That she lived at all surprised us. That she turned out to be sweet and loving surprised us.  That she runs the house, unfortunately, doesn't surprise us...

Anyway... I'm too tired to figure out embedding, so this is the best I could do... it's a slide show featuring our dog (and our litter of puppies) playing in the leaves:

Would you care to try again?

At long last, I figured it out... this is Trixie (in majestic mode... I couldn't find the "I'm hiding from the neighbor's leaf blower under daddy's Kia" shot that we got 3 minutes later).  Beagle/husky mutt of some kind.
