I post a lot of this stuff on my blog (http://krylyr.livejournal.com/), so if you're on LJ (or even if you're not) feel free to drop by and say hi there.
So to start off with, I thought I'd post an update of the stuff I'm working on and the stuff I'm submitting around.
Novels:
Fallen Horizon: I finally finished a draft of my SF novel I'm pretty happy with that deals with fundamentalists and terrorists. I'll probably tweak some very minor things and send it out for critiques around the weekend.
The Unbelievable Origin of Superspiff and the Toothpick Kid: I'm hopefully going to podcast my superhero juvenile novel in the not too distant future, now that I can let go of Fallen Horizon for a little while.
Short Stories:
Last Repsects: Getting republished by Apex Online next month! wOOt!
Puritan Noir -- Love Burn: My dark romantic comedy circa the Salem Witch Trials as told by a Sam Spade-like narrator. This needs to be rewritten a bit, I think. After that, I need to figure out where to send it next.
Saint Darwin's Spirituals: My elevator pitch for this one is Golems and Ghost-fucking. Hopefully I'll have some good news to report on this very soon.
God-Shaped Box: One of the few stories I wrote that has no sex, violence, or profanity. (Superspiff and the Toothpick Kid almost qualifies, except it's got violence.) And probably one of my favorites. Out. Waiting. Gotta love the submission process.
Trust and Travesty: Just submitted this to the Writer's of the Future contest. Will they dig Jane Austen meets James Bond Steampunk?
In the Belly of the Whale: This has UFOs, angels, and a serial killer. If I could figure out if this was horror, SF, or fantasy, I might have a better chance of figuring out who wants to buy it.
...and I should probably start on some new short stories, too. I'd like to do another, longer Puritan Noir story but part of me wonders if I should wait until I sell the first. I've got some seedlings of ideas for other stories in the Last Respects universe. Then there's the next novel...

Started on a new short story, Haole, a post-apocalyptic short story set in Hawaii. I like it, but I'm having a hell of a time figuring out how it ends. I'd written an ending but it seems so meh, I went back and canned it and am trying to figure out where it went wrong. But it's great fun to have a new short story to be working on.
I also got a fantastic rejection for God-Shaped Box with excellent critiques -- one that suggested it be a novella instead of a 1,500 word short story. Hrm. I guess I know what I'm working on next :)
Sent out Puritan Noir and In the Belly of the Whale.
Fallen Horizon is doing the reader critique thing. One crit has already come in, pointing out some very good stuff, some of which I knew had to be fixed but couldn't quite put my finger on how. I'm looking forward to hearing what the other readers had to say.

Good news! Saint Darwin's Spirituals is going to be hitting with a one-two punch from Murky Depths and Variant Frequencies next year!
In other news, I finished Haole and it's now going through the slushpiles.

Five rejections in a week bites. However, getting an acceptance on the tail-end of those rejections is very nice! I sold my short story God-Shaped Box to Hub Magazine today. Huzzah!!!
In other news, I finished writing a steampunk fable called "The Gearaffe Who Didn't Tick." It might actually be the hardest thing I've ever written -- I always conjure up China Mieville/noir-esque images when I think of steampunk, so writing a fable with talking mechanical animals was a bit of a stretch for me. But I'm very fond and proud of the finished story, so I think it was a good exercise.

Heh. No, it's Haole, which is a Hawaiian term for outsider. In Spanish, it might be "gringo."
Halo would be fricking fun, though. ;D

Stories come from the strangest places. I've got a very rough draft of the Christian and the Gay Robot short story, as commissioned by Anarkey. And I emphasize the word rough. At this point, it's only on a notepad and needs to be transcribed, and I need to fill in some details. But it's a draft.
For the time being, I'm going to call it God is My Programmer.

Chugging along with my novel, although I don't know that I'm going to finish my rewrite before May. Probably sometime in May. It's not a big problem, since it's a self-imposed deadline, I just wish I could make it.
Have not heard anything back about "The Gearaffe Who Didn't Tick" from Shimmer yet. I think I'll send them a query when May hits.
Sent "In the Belly of the Whale" to the Triangulation: Taking Flight anthology. It might be a little bit of a stretch for the taking flight theme, but there are angels, and UFOs, and he is fleeing, so maybe.

"God-Shaped Box" is this week's feature fiction from Hub Magazine (http://www.hub-mag.co.uk/?p=36)! Download it or read it online. It's a quick read -- about 1,500 words -- and it's one of the few stories I've written that doesn't have any sex, violence, or profanity in it. (There are some serious drugs, though.)
I wrote this story as a reaction to several things. One, my friend responded to a couple other stories I'd written (including "Last Respects") about the religious themes/overtones in my story: "I can't figure out if you are super religious, super skeptical or just intrigued by the strangeness that is Christianity as a whole, as a study rather than a way of life." Which is one of the coolest pieces of feedback I've ever received, because I get very annoyed when I read so-called "Christian" fiction that sounds more like a sermon than a story, and I would be bummed if my fiction came off like that. I like fiction that asks questions, and I wanted to write something personal about my belief system that wasn't preachy. Also, as I've said here before, I wanted to prove (mostly to myself) that I could write a good SF story that centered around faith and religion.
Anyway, I hope you like it. If you check it out, let me know what you think.

Working on the rewrite of my novel Fallen Horizon has been pretty much all-consuming. I was hoping to have it done at the beginning of this month. Now, I think if I can actually get it finished by next month, I'll be happy. Then out to the beta beta betas...
I still really want to get the podcast of the children's superhero book up next month sometime. I still need to hunt down some music and some album artwork and then get the website going. I feel like such an idiot with technical stuff sometimes.

Cool, birdless. I hope you like it! It's a bit different than God-Shaped Box (all the sex and violence that wasn't in God-Shaped Box seems to have slipped into this story), but so far the feedback's been pretty positive.

I'm finally feeling like I'm closing in on finishing the rewrite of Fallen Horizon. It's take longer than I thought it would, and it will probably take longer still, but the end is in sight, and I want to make sure it's the best book I can write. Still, I'm looking forward to it being finished.
Everything else is still stalled, including a possible rewrite of "Haole." I got three very nice rejections from pro magazines. Two of them pin-pointed where the story didn't work for them, so I'm trying to re-examine and decide if I want to do a major overhaul over the second half of that story. It's kind of rough, because I do like what's there now. But I think I'll just save what I've got, then rip out the second half, and rewrite it from scratch. Maybe several times, and see if I get a better second half than the one I currently have.
But I probably won't even try to hit that until I've finished Fallen Horizon. And even then, I might need to work on something fresh, too.

Glad you gave St. Darwin a listen! 5,000 words was tight, but I'm hoping to get back to that world soon and eventually even write a longer short story about St. Charlie himself.

I finished recording the first episode of my podcast last night! I'm still wrestling with all the technical stuff of getting it up to my new website (Ah, PodPress. THAT's what I'm missing!) but hopefully it should be up in the next couple of days. It's a kids book about wannabe superheroes, the golden rule of comic books, and fandom. It's probably the most G-rated thing I've ever written and is (hopefully) a lot of fun.
I'll link to it here as soon as it's finished and posted (and maybe start a new thread in Podcast Pedantry). I'm obviously very, very new at trying to do a podcast, so I expect there will be a lot I can learn from you all about it.

Hear me ramble about secret identies (the real golden rule), would-be superheroes (not to be confused with poser superheroes), Cyberpunk and the Cyber-Commandos (the cool and teh suck). Like I say in the intro, I wrote this to be an intergenerational thing, so if you have kids, hopefully they'll get a kick out of it, too.
Obviously, all this tech stuff is a work in progress for me. Any feedback you want to give on the story and the site is greatly appreciated. (There's no itunes button, yet, but I'm hoping to add that soon. I'm also going to try and tweak some of the blog formatting, -- i.e., make the red letters bigger.)

My comp didn't like the "feed:" part. I copied edited and pasted and got your feed. Just thought you might want to edit that link a bit.

Dave, I really liked it. Having said that I'm going to move into the helpful (hopefully) nitpicks.
The audio has been brought up. It makes sense for the voice to be mono, but it needs to be in both channels.
Your voice was really loud during the intro, probably in the red. This causes some loss of quality. Keep it in the green, man.
In your thanks section at the end you thank your father-in-law (I think) twice. Sounds like you recorded it more than once and kept the two best recordings.
All in all a super first podcast. Most of the first eps I've heard were just horrible. I don't think there's anything that won't shake out with experience.
Played it for my kids this morning, but they're too young for this. They didn't get the setting or anything. Superheroes are just on underwear and t-shirts to them. They have no idea about Comic conventions or anything of the sort. I, however, am old enough to get it.

Overall the sound quality was clear. You were just too loud for some of it. But there weren't bad echoes or other noises. Sounds like you don't really need to change your set up at all. You just need to get used to speaking a little more on a level.

In addition, my contribution to Stories of the Third Wave has been posted (http://murverse.com/2008/08/15/stories-of-the-third-wave-8-the-cockroachs-bite/) -- "The Cockroach's Bite" a candid interview with fringe hero and hero groupie The Cockroach. It was actually the hardest thing I've recorded, but it was a lot of fun to do. Hope you dig it.
Hoping to be done with the rewrite/polish of my novel by next week, and get it off to beta-readers by the end of the month. After that I'm looking forward to getting lost in writing some short stories.

Finished the second rewrite and polish of Fallen Horizon. It's going out to Beta-Readers one more time because I'm glutton for punishment, and I want to absolutely nail this thing (I've spent so much time working on it, it'd be a waste not to).
But I'm feeling pretty good about it, and suspect after that, I'll be ready to send it out into the great wide open.
Hopefully now I'll have more time to get back into the crit group.

I finished a draft I'm happy with of "Heart of Clay," which is a story set in the "Saint Darwin's Spirituals" world.
I'm letting "Haole" ruminate for a bit more in my head. The feedback from the crit group here has been really helpful and has given me some solid ideas on how to make it better before sending it out to Weird Tales. The changes I need to make seem tangible now, where before I was just confused.
Have not touched "God Is My Programmer." I read over it a few weeks ago and liked it, but it feels very much unfinished and rough, and I'm not at all sure what to do with it.
Not sure what I'm going to work on next short fiction-wise. I've got ideas for another Puritan Noir story and two other stories set in the Last Respects universe. Also, I'd really like to try and write a Weird Western. Decisions, decisions...

"The Gearaffe That Didn't Tick" didn't tick enough for Shimmer and is now hitting the slushpiles of other magazines. I'm optimistic about this one. The rejection from Shimmer was very encouraging and convinced me the story was solid enough. Also, it's one of the most G/PG-rated things I've written in a while and as a result, I feel like there's HUGE number of markets it could go to.
"Heart of Clay" is coming back from Beta-Readers now. I don't think it will be too long 'til it's ship-shape and ready to go out.
Starting back in on "Haole" now...Thanks to the group here, I feel like I'm not going in blind :)

Almost almost done with a rough draft of a new space opera-esque short story I think will be called "Life-Debt" (I was originally thinking about calling it Starkiller, but I'm thinking eventually the story will morph into something bigger and Starkiller might be a better name for whatever that is). It's been fun. I don't think I've ever written a serious space opera type story before. Anyway, I'm enjoying playing with some of the space opera tropes. It's relatively short so far and will probably finish under 4,000 words.
After I finish that draft, I'm going to write a horror/crime story called "Sammy's Girl." Not sure how long that's going to be, although I think I've already figured out the basic premise and characters and everything. Well, more like I lifted the basic premise and characters. But it's cool, I only stole from the Bible. I'm banking on God being cool with Creative Commons.
I've got to write that one at marathon speed. Like in a couple days. :o

Resold "Saint Darwin's Spirituals" to the Triangulation anthology series! I did kind of an extensive rewrite on it at the request of the Triangulation editors and am really, really pleased with how it came out.
Now I'm rewriting the new story set in the LR universe...

Sold "Heart of Clay" to Murky Depths! It's a sort of sequel to "Saint Darwin's Spirituals" and will also be a podcast on Variant Frequencies.
I think it's coming out in 2010, though. Wowza, that's a long ways away (or at least, it sounds like it's a long ways away).
Working on a new superhero short story at the moment. Not 100% sure what I'm going to do after that, but I've got a few options...

So, thanks to Swamp, I realize I'm a little late in pointing out here that the Triangulation: Dark Glass (http://www.lulu.com/content/paperback-book/triangulation-dark-glass/7308936) anthology is out, featuring a slightly different version of Saint Darwin's Spirituals and and and a Rachel Swirsky story. You can pick it up either as a download or in dead tree version. The cover is beautiful.
Also, Variant Frequencies production of Saint Darwin's Spirituals was nominated for a Parsec award (http://parsecawards.com/node/861)! So wOOt!
In other news, I finished a new story - one I'm very excited about. I'm not sure I've ever had so much fun writing a story as I did that one.
Also need to take another crack at the new superhero story.

Wow. Been a while since I updated here!
I'm definitely still writing...grabbing spare minutes wherever I can find them. Currently, I'm spending time working on two different stories right now: a nautical fantasy adventure and a derranged Bible story retelling of Samson and Delilah*. At some point after that, I'm going to write a new St. Darwin story. Oh, and I want to finish my novel before the summer. For reals this time.
I've got five different stories out right now and just had a story - "Trust and Travesty" - come out over at Hub this week (http://www.hubfiction.com/2010/01/issue-110/)! It's kind of a Jane Austen-esque Cyberpunk/Mannerpunk corporate espionage romantic comedy spectacle. So if sex, violence, and ballroom dancing sound like fun, it might be worth checking out.
*Not sure it's more messed up than the Bible story itself, but there you go!

I really enjoyed the world, particularly the image of a golem police force patrolling cobble stone streets. Very nice. It must be a trip to have Vincent Chong conjure up the things you made up in your head.

What was the starting inspiration for the stories? Was it a character or the setting or some little detail (like the goggles)?

I...wow. It was a combination of things, IIRC. It began with Matt Wallace from VF (and at the time Murky Depths) asked me to write a story for them. So a big inspiration was the challenge of coming up with something new I thought would kick the ass of an editor and writer I really respected.
So, I started thinking about steampunk because I liked it and I was pretty sure VF hadn't really done any. But I tend to love steampunk that has lots of weird stuff in it, not just cool technology that was ahead of it's time. And then I thought about the goggles, and why someone would really need them. And also, what was the point of divergence. I didn't really have all this stuff figured out in my head - I'm not the best at outlining, although I like to think I'm getting better - but it was all swimming around up there so I just dove in and started writing it. After I figured out the first sentence of the first story, I started to have a pretty good idea of what I wanted to see in this world and story. And then I started sprinkling in more weird stuff (golem constables, grounders, vampires, monsters, etc.) as I went along.
When I wrote the second one, I knew I wanted it to focus on a golem constable because Lucy's attitude of being so willing to try and kill one if necessary felt like misguided prejudice. That and I've always been a fan of characters who can't actually speak, for some reason. And...I just wanted to see a golem fight a bunch of vampires.

I'm thrilled about this, especially because it was workshopped a bit here back when I had time (a loooooooooooooooooong time ago) to participate in the crit group. It's considerably different now, but oh how the critiques helped. So, thanks everyone :)

That is awesome. Again, a perfect, yet unexpected application of a Triangulation theme. I remember back when the editors were doing podcasts about the submissions that they hoped for more GLBT stories. You have the Trangulation mojo, my friend.
It will be interesting to see how you changed it. If I remember, it was a little over the top when I read it, but a very interesting post-apocalyptic tale.

;D Me? A little over the top? Sir, you do me an injustice. But I think it is...less over the top now. That said, this is coming from the guy who wrote about ghostgasms, so take that with a grain of salt :) No more cannibals, though!
As for the anthology themes, I've been lucky. Originally, I thought this year's theme was going to be the color of silence, and I was like: PERFECT! I'll send them "Heart of Clay." But then it was announced as The End of the Rainbow.
For both this story and St. D, I did a bit of rewriting.

Back when I subbed the story, Bull Spec only had an emphasis on local writers, and was open to submissions from anyone else as long as the stories met the guidelines.

First off, my story "God-Shaped Box" is live at the Journey Into...! Podcast (http://journeyintopodcast.blogspot.com/2011/08/journey-9-god-shaped-box-by-dk-thompson.html) and read by none other than Larry Santoro. I have squeed myself mightily.
Also, a Finnish magazine wants to translate Saint Darwin's Spirituals into Finnish. This is the first time I've been translated. Personally, I'm looking forward to finding out how to say ghostgasm in Finnish.

Bwahahahahahahaha. Man, I'm such a sucker.
Anyway, I've not been writing as much as I'd like. But I have been writing some. I wrote a story for my daughter when she went to stay with her uncle for a week that I need to revise. I wrote (and revised and revised) a new Saint Darwin story I'm shopping around, and wrote a second one that I need to completely rewrite. And I got inspired by the PodCastle flash fiction contest to do a couple more pieces of short fiction (one is 1,000 words, needs to be revised, but is pretty close; the other needs to be finished).
So, looks like I have a bit a lot of revising to do. Good times!
I'm planning on doing NaNoWriMo this year (which I've never done before). I'm not sure if I'm gonna do a novel or try to write a bunch of short stories. Both have certain appeals, but I'd really like to write a new novel. (I'm just worried it needs more research. Well, not worried so much. It definitely needs to research. But I'm pretty sure I can't do all the research I want before Nov.)
Um, I don't think I linked to this before, but I talked about my "Ichabod Crane, Master of the Occult" (http://journeyintopodcast.blogspot.com/2012/11/journey-50-ichabod-crane-master-of.html) story, which I think is fun for October. It's at Journey Into..., and I'm really thrilled with the audio production Marshal gave it. Also, I had a twisted Christmas story "Saint Nicholas's Helper (http://pseudopod.org/2011/12/16/pseudopod-260-saint-nicholas-helper/)" a couple years ago people seemed to like.

If you want usable material, I recommend the batch of short stories route. A 50K novel written in a rush is going to be such a muddle (unless you are already James Patterson or someone equivalently skilled at cranking 'em out) that it will take you three or four times as long just to edit it into usability.
Easier to post to the Crit Group, too. ;-)

Ha. Yeah, the Crit Group...I think I've only put one story in there. Maybe I'll try again sometime.
So, my current thought for NaNoWriMo is I'll split the difference and write 2-3 stories, and maybe 20,000 words of a novel. (I figure the novel will be somewhere between 60-80K words in total, though that's a very rough guess. I really need to outline it to be sure.)

I meant to tell you that this story has become the highest page-hit earner on the Journey Into... blog site (I will have to get back to you on downloads). This is mostly due to somebody posting a link to this story on the Wikipedia page for "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" under audiobooks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Legend_of_Sleepy_Hollow). I didn't do it, but I thought it was pretty cool.

So...finished revising one of the stories (I think) and have sent it out to some betas. There's at least one other story I'd like to revise before NaNoWriMo.
Weirdly, I realize that 3 of the last 4 stories I've worked on have contained angels in some form. But the fourth story has an amusement park on the back of a giant floating turtle, so maybe that evens things out.

Spent a chunk of time today revising "All Things to All People." I probably need to do one or two more reads of it, but I feel pretty happy with it. Will probably send it out sometime next week.
Then I'll have two submissions out, which is sadly a pretty big deal for me these days. (Yeah, I suck. Don't be like me when you grow up!)
Might maybe possibly get a chance to still work on revisions to that other story before NaNoWriMo.

Wow. Not since pre-NaNoWriMo?
So, things have been going good. I've now got five stories out on submission (one of them a reprint), with a couple others pretty close to joining them. All in all, I'm pretty enthusiastic.
