Title: Story behind your avatar?
Post by: Planish on October 08, 2007, 10:51:55 PM
I see a lot of intriguing images used for avatars, and am curious as to where some of them come from, or if they signify anything.

Fer starters, I'll say that mine was lifted from an old print advertisement, found on Ad*Access (http://scriptorium.lib.duke.edu/adaccess/).

I just thought he looked kinda' creepy, and almost robot-like. I flipped it horizontally because it would be appearing along the left side of the window, and it's better to have people facing the centre rather than outward.

Users I'd like to hear from:
Bdoomed
Rigger
Mr. Tweedy
Jim
palimpsest - I can't quite read the image. Somebody with a violin?
Leon_Kensington - looks almost like Zorro?
Russel Nash - let me guess, an actual pile of cars on a spike? From an auto salvage yard?
robertmarkbram - a logotype?
goatkeeper - Squids and whales?
fiveyearwinter
slic - looks familiar, can't quite place it.

I actually switch my avatar quite often.  All of the pics have been images I shot with my new camera.  Except for the cars on the spike.  I got this image from a story on NPR (http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=12782760).  It's an art instalation (Spindle by Dustin Shuler) in a mall parking lot.  It is a large spike with real cars on it.  It was shown in the first Wayne's World (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005JH9J/escapepod-20) movie when they were driving around singing to Queen.  The mall wants to put in a new Walgreens there and it is about to be/was just torn down.

I'll probably be changing my avatar again soon.

Edit: Added picture and links.

sirana: good job picking from one of the most eyecatching scenes in the film.  Carla Gugino (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001303/) is ... well ... anyway ...

As for mine... well... I like lolcats... my first one, "It's Dangerous to Go Alone; Here, Take This" was from the Legend of Zelda.  However, my current one is from Serenity.  That cat is pretty Mal-looking.

It's a photo I took of one of my rifles.  I suppose there isn't much creativity to it, but I'm a big fan of responsible gun ownership and I'm interested in target shooting.  I detest the term gun-nut because firearms ownership is so much more than that.  It's a right and a responsibility all rolled into one.

Plus it keeps the King of England out of us US citizen's faces!

I did a lot of target shooting in high school (.22's and air rifles), though I haven't been able to keep it up up here (NYC is, for good reasons, locked down pretty tight in the gun department). I miss how relaxing it was.

Anyway, mine's a negative of my eye I took while playing around with my cell's camera (an avatar image is about as much as that 640x480 sensor can do). So if it's really killing you what my eye looked like when I was 16ish, you could invert it in Photoshop to find out.

Although it's not clear in the avatar, I'm wearing a very thick, very blue chord shirt in that photo (Which, oddly enough I'm wearing today.  Freaky.).  What's also not clear in that shot is I'm actually a fairly big guy.  I apparently have my grandfather's build and as a result am 6'1, broad-shouldered and chunky with it.
So, I'm walking down the street one day, wearing said shirt and pass one of my neighbours and their little girl.  Who looks up at me, smiles and says 'Monster!'

Two things happen straight away:  Firstly her mother turns bright red and explains that she's just seen Monsters Inc and that she's really sorry.  Secondly, in between breaking up in hysterics I assure her it's fine, that it's a MASSIVE compliment and that I know exactly what her daughter means.

I'm still laughing ten minutes later having gone to the local corner shop and come back.

Therefore, it seemed to make sense to take a photo of me and Sully.  Which, incidentally, is also used as my Facebook shot and has led to a flurry of 'Nice photo Al but who's the git in the blue shirt next to you?' comments:)

I'm going to be obnoxious now.  Here are the other avatars I have used this year:

The avatar I use on the Armour Archives is the heraldic device I use for SCA activities:
"Gules, between four pellets fimbriated Or a saltire sable fimbriated Or"

... Therefore, it seemed to make sense to take a photo of me and Sully.  Which, incidentally, is also used as my Facebook shot and has led to a flurry of 'Nice photo Al but who's the git in the blue shirt next to you?' comments:)
*spit take* :D

I loved that business with the seemingly fluorescent bandaids all over his face.
Pity you didn't get a shot with Carla from a bit earlier, but I guess this is a Family show. ;)

More requests:
mummifiedstalin - Any particular connection to that photo? I recognised Sir Philip Sidney (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Philip_Sidney) because I've been thinking of attempting to make a gorget like that some day. Looks like polished blackened steel with either gilding or "latten" decoration. I haven't figured if the back is supposed to be solid nor whether it opens up in the front or at the side.

raygunray - did you used to have an alien head with a wierd-looking hat, like something from a pulp magazine cover?

Mine is a just a logo for my podcast.  That is me wearing fooling around at the JFK Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida.  Me putting on a silly hat and getting my wife to take my picture is a road trip tradition.  I don't photograph well because I'm so white I throw off the white balance on cameras.

:) i drew mine!
twas in m' old sketchbook (gotta redraw it in my new one)

i drew it after goin through the gallery of Revrendwyrm who is on a forum for a game.
http://forums2.battleon.com/f/tm.asp?m=8117031 if ya wanna see his stuff, i looove it!
anyways it kinda inspired me to do the drawing.  if ya see the pic in its full size, its a fallen angel.  Its wings are ripped, its halo is lying on the ground by its feet, and its got two lil nubs for horns slowly growing.

my old avatar (the lil moose) is from an old tv show, Invader Zim.  that show has largely defined/influenced/developed my sense of humor, art, philosophies, etc.

Well I finally got off my a$$ and uploaded an avatar.  It is a bindrune based on my initials.  Bind runes are a combination of runes made into a larger rune, a use example is for protection.  search google for protection bindrunes, you will most likely see images that you have seen before.

I've used a few...
My current avatar is a picture of a sculpture by Mark Dion.  He does some interesting work.  This one was exhibited in the South London Gallery-  www.southlondongallery.org (http://www.southlondongallery.org)   THis is the biggest, wierdest mole I've ever seen.  I'm sure I'll get bored with it in a couple weeks and look for something else.
I can't find a website for him, just a few badly out of date bios.

I've been called "The Mole" off and on since middle school because I can't see very well.

That, and I like to eat earthworms.

I'm obsessed with any and all info pertaining to "Colossal Squid" findings.  The photo I use for my avatar cracks me up because of the ?m
It's not that they don't know how long these big ass squid get- they just haven't invented the number yet...

I actually switch my avatar quite often.  All of the pics have been images I shot with my new camera.  Except for the cars on the spike.

Is the lizard your picture also?  It looks like the little beasts (anoles?) I see running around in Mexico and Florida US.

I was doing some work down in Texas for the Army. Texas had/has an anti-littering slogan of "Don't mess with Texas" and, well, I couldn't help but mess with it.
Weeks and months go by of working 12 and 16 hour days with very little time for messing with a state when on my last weekend there I saw this sign "Please Stay Off The Grass" outside the General's office. So I boldly walked over the lawn to the sign and posed while my boss took the picture.
That was 3 years ago... maybe I should get a new avatar?

[Edit: yeah, I posted this, and then went and changed the avatar... sorry.]

I thought I played this game, but I guess I didn't...   in the center of the frame [of my previous avatar], was a picture of my sister's family on a pedal boat in the little lake at Encanto Park in Phoenix.  I, too, am in a boat [in that formerly existent picture formerly used as my avatar].

NOW, I'm apparently using a picture of me in Wurzburg, Deutschland, in 1999.  I was visiting an Army buddy over the weekend while I was doing language refresher at Garmisch-Partenkirchen, and something about that storefront was calling to me....

But everywhere else, I've taken to using this self portrait:

Very briefly (a day or less) I put up the picture of myself with C. J. Cherryh and Jane Fancher taken in September 2005.

Now I have Eeyore, because I recognize in him a kindred spirit.

[edit]
And the signature borrows from Episode 16 (http://ansuz.sooke.bc.ca/creative/reviews/utena/ep16.php) of the Revolutionary Girl Utena anime, and the "cowbell" sketch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/More_cowbell) from Saturday Night Live.

The first time I visited my gf (now wife) in Berlin I went on a walkabout while she finished her last day at work before going on vacation.  I was walking around the Zoologischer Garten area when I just burst out laughing.  Everybody was looking at this strange guy standing alone and laughing his ass off.  I had just spotted a large neon sign in a store window.  In letters about a foot and a half high it said, "Schmuck".  When you know what the word literally means in Yiddish it's even funnier.

We had taken the kids to the Phoenix Zoo, and there was a punk/goth couple there, admiring the antelope.  He had a spiky, purple mohawk, and while I don't consider that either "good" or "bad" as a personal life choice... I couldn't resist snapping a photo because he was standing right next to the sign that read "PRONGHORN".

Well.... the long version is buried in this thread here (http://forum.escapeartists.info/index.php?topic=1290.0).   The short version is, someone tried to use beloved moderator, Russell Nash, as the deity of his own religion in a semi-Socratic thought experiment on faith.  It kind of backfired because the rest of us are a bunch of smart-assed nay-sayers with hyper-active imaginations (would you expect any less in a science fiction podcast forum?)... and the result has been a running inside joke.  As you can see by my sig and description, I tried to stake out territory as the supreme heretic, but others (such as Heradel) have posed their own (unorthodox) heretical positions, too.

This, in a nutshell, explains the existence of The Church of Russell Nash (aka TCoRN).  Yea, and verily, go now in peace.  (Or in pieces.)

What up with the Lego avatar?

Apparently one of my co-workers was in Toys-R-Us and saw that little guy in his mail van (http://city.lego.com/en-us/Products/Cargo/7731_MailVan.aspx)... and decided that it looked like his workplace hero, yours truly.

He got so excited that he had found a "TAD" action figure, he just had to get it... and his fiancee even added a little "TAD" nametag with a fine-tipped pen.  I, being easily flattered (a foible I attribute to not being a deity in my own made-up religion) decided to swipe the photo from the Lego people and make it my own.  I figure since they "stole" my likeness, I can steal it back... and I humbly offer to pay 4 gazillion percent royalties on every penny of profit I make from it.

If any Lego representatives are reading this - I will send TAD 25% of any sum of money you choose to send me, as payment for providing me joy with his avatar. That'll turn into a gazillion percent return on your investment!

Oh, I never said there was anything wrong with your position... just that I was miffed to find out I wasn't the only heretic.

I imagine this is how Martin Luther would have felt hammering up his 95 Theses, and then finding a Calvinist pamphlet floating in the gutter behind him.  (Aside from any obvious space-time anachronisms, of course.)

But, unless you just want to argue (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=teMlv3ripSM&NR=1)....

It's the problem with population expansion. Back in the old days you could be bloody certain once you had a clever idea that it would take years before someone else had it — look at Darwin and that other guy. But these days everyone's been breeding like rabbits on testosterone injections and you've got a good five minutes if you're lucky before some other bastard has the same idea.

Okay, so better late than never to this thread. And yep, I changed my avatar before posting, largely because I've been meaning to forever anyway, and this was good impetus. My first avatar was, of course, me. The lazy way. It was created for another forum and on-hand when I started here. While I am not a big fan of posting random pics of myself on the web, I am also usually tired enough of "the online" (as one of my friends call it) by the time I'm done checking my email and websites that apathy wins.

The new one, and I hope to change more regularly now that I've been prodded into it once, is one of the mushrooms 'Munths and I identified on our semi-regular wild-food foraging trips last year. Not edible, btw, and I'm also forgetting the name at the moment. Pretty, nonetheless. This avatar won over the pics of bentos I've been doing because while hiking today, 'Munths and I were reminiscing over our previous mushroomy finds and anticipating the bounty of The New State this season. So, it seemed appropriate.

And, I love the mole. In a very creepy, disturbing way.

My avatar is an underwater picture of me during my last day of training (PADI Open Water).  Though it is not as if anyone could tell from the picture itself, the location is off-shore of Waya Island, Yasawas, Fiji (roughly the same area where The Blue Lagoon and Castaway were filmed).  I chose the picture since it is really me, but behind a mask and regulator, it is unlikely that anyone would be able to figure out that it is me.

Cool picture, but you should consider some enhancements like the fish guy got in Pressure.  You could lose the mask, regulator, flippers, etc.

My avatar comes from my sole attempt at nature photography.  There's a big forested park here in Taipei where a troop of monkeys makes their home.  (There are people who have lived here for years and don't realize that you can still find wild monkeys within Taipei city limits.)

I went to seek them out one day.  This is one of the best pictures I got.  I managed to avoid being peed on from the treetops - barely.

I recently changed my avatar.  Here's the story:

Last summer or November, I forget which, we were in Florida and my daughter was toddling around the deck.  She fell onto her butt just as I took a picture.  When I reviewed the pictures, I realized she was totally in a ninja jump-kick position similar to Liu Kang's in Mortal Kombat.  A quick trip around Google netted me the guy who looked like he was getting kicked in the head.  Half an hour with photoshop and voila!

Anyway, mine's a negative of my eye I took while playing around with my cell's camera (an avatar image is about as much as that 640x480 sensor can do). So if it's really killing you what my eye looked like when I was 16ish, you could invert it in Photoshop to find out.

I don't really like it when people change avatars; somehow I always feel like they're a different personality. But mine was about four to six years old, and I didn't really change much about it apart from taking it with a 10.2 megapixel camera (Nikon D60) with much better glass instead of a 640x480 pixel one with "glass", and looking straight into the camera instead of looking off into the distance.

My avatar is my Nabaztag (http://www.nabaztag.com/en/index.html). That's my cute rabbit, called Slartibartfast. He's connected to the internet and he can do some great stuff like tell the time, remind me of things, practice TaiChi and every once in a while he starts talking about just anything, which I don't always understand because sometimes he does that in French.

Anyway, Slartibartfast posed for my avatar. I think he's pointing to Norway in that pic...

Before 2003 I would have reacted poorly to anything that just started talking to me in French unless it was holding a bottle of wine and some Brie.  After 2003 I think I'd be more understnding, but I'd still have to keep an eye on it.

In the few posts I've made here, my avatar has received as much attention as my feeble attempts to communicate someting entertaining/meaningful. This is not including the posts which have been ignored and I deleted. Don't drink and post.

So, it's from the TV show Scrubs. You should see the animated version.

http://web.mac.com/aaroncrouch/iWeb/Hosted/Avatars%20etc..html (http://web.mac.com/aaroncrouch/iWeb/Hosted/Avatars%20etc..html)

My daughter is now 4, and this is the avatar I chose for myself when I realized that I was not the nice guy I always thought I was (before she was 2) but I was actually Shrek. The Ogre. The monster who yells a lot.

I don't like me sometimes, but at least I'm keeping her warm.

Yours,

It would be cool if a person's old avatar stuck with the old postings.  I seem to recall this video avatar of a kitten coming out of some guy's mouth, freaking hilarious.

Also, I miss the giant dead rat sculpture.

I like taking pictures. Pictures of anything and everything. I LOVE taking them to editing software and editing or just playing with them. It's guaranteed just about anything I end up with as an avatar is a picture I've taken myself. My last one was a self portrait rendered in sepia with some color touches re-added. Plus it made me look angry and sorta hot. But.. realizing self pictures may seem vain I have changed to a really cool tree I saw in San Pedro California during a vacation there. I have an amazingly short attention span, so it's virtually guaranteed my pictures will change without much warning based solely on whim and my own very warped sense of humor/timing.

I don't have a story really - I just saw this picture many years ago and thought "so that's what a troll baby looks like" and it's sort of stuck with me ever since...

The weird thing is that I'm pretty sure I've lost it several times as I've migrated from one computer to the next - and yet somehow it magically appears on my computer sooner or later.  Bit creepy when I think about it really.

Almost got the entire rainbow in.  Tracie worked really hard to get the colors properly dispersed.

You should see how many people do a double take!  Not often you see a guy that's 6'5 sportin' a rainbow mohawk!

They say, "wow, look at the really tall gay guy showing the colors with a Mohawk."

You change your avatar so often, that you should put the picture in your post too.

Actually, they generally don't say anything.  It's funny to hear mothers hushing their children.  Generally, when someone says something, they get a smile and thank you.

I'll go back and add the pictures.  Sometime.  I promise.  Really.

Maybe I was a little too far into the punk scene (yes, it still exists) when I was in London, but I wouldn't think of that as being notable.

I am a twelve-year-old girl.

;D actually I'm the uncle to a twelve-year-old girl and her ten-year-old sister.  But I'm "walking the walk" since this was the avatar I suggested in Nash's previous "choose my avatar" poll, and I'd never suggest somebody else use an avatar that I wouldn't use myself.

Another month or two, and it's back to Eeyore, the only Milne character that I really identify with.  ;).  Yeah, and my favorite Douglas Adams character is Marvin.  ;) ;)

Quote from: wikipedia
The Great Auk, Pinguinus impennis, formerly of the genus Alca, is a bird that became extinct in the mid-19th century. It was the only species in the genus Pinguinus, a group which included several flightless giant auks from the Atlantic, to survive until modern times. It was also known as garefowl (from the Old Norse geirfugl, meaning "spear-bird", a reference to the shape of its beak), or penguin (before the birds known by that name today were so called)

Quote from: wikipedia
Penguins (order Sphenisciformes, family Spheniscidae) are a group of aquatic, flightless birds living almost exclusively in the Southern Hemisphere.

To be honest, being dead does that more ;) Also, hypothetically, do you think one small arm weapon could hold off the British army if you had to do it by yourself? ;)

Anywho, as for my avatar, he's a cutie little Hydralisk I found on Deviant Art, I think.

Elaboration: my Captain Picard Face is from the sixth-season episode Timescape (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Timescape_%28Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation%29). It's when they're on the shuttle, coming back from the conference, and Picard is making fun of a professor with a very dry, boring delivery.

My avatar is the same avatar I've used in dozens of forums for the past ten years or so.  It was originally a photo captioned "Feline Levitation!" that got around the 'net for a while in those days.  Basically, you toss your kitty in the air and then snap a photograph, and instant hilarity is created.  My default username everywhere I go is "Scattercat," so I decided to use this as my "face" to go with my "name."  I'm very big on identity and being clear that I'm me wherever I go, so I use the same username/avatar combination everywhere I can.

Wow, after a few years I finally got one to work!

Mine is a photo of Dr. Shock (Joe Zawislak), who was my local horror host broadcasting out of Philadelphia, PA on UHF channel 17 (WPHL) around 1977 or so, when I was growing up at the New Jersey shore and all of 10 years old.  He showed the usual package of second rate creature features on Saturday afternoons during 2 shows (MAD THEATRE and HORROR THEATRE, I was too young to stay up for his late night Saturday show, SCREAM-IN).  I remember him fondly and I'd like to grow up to be him someday.

Thanks for listening

Mine is some red velvet worms. I chose it because they look sort of cool and I have some martian poetry about them.  They've nothing to do with my name unless you want to make a very distant connection between them being red and the root of the name seraphim being "fiery, burning" and fire burning red hot.

I may eventually change it...I once used an odd rocking chair that I sort of liked...maybe I'll do that again.

For a while I have been compelled by the concept of robots as main characters. Ever since Data, I've been fascinated by the struggle between emotion and logic, programming and free will.

I'm also interested in the D&D/fantasy trope of the paladin - one who is chosen to do good, but must grapple with the imperfect, venal world in which he lives... and his own imperfect venal nature.

Put them together and you get... ElectricPaladin.

Also, put them together and you get... Robo, from Chrono Trigger.

And he's my icon.

This grasshopper was sitting right outside my parking deck at work, so naturally I could be seen crawling around the sidewalk for the next five minutes trying to get the perfect picture.  ::) He stayed still until I was done and then promptly flew off once I stood back up. :)

Accommodating! Is he available for photo shoots?

He really was! Unfortunately he got impatient and flew off before I could pay him for his time or get his card. :P

New avatar!  Again, something I drew over the course of a long long long time because I was lazy and didn't finish it for a long long long long time.

The cat on the pictue is Manfred, he rules the street where I live, sleeps in three different homes and he liked that cushion from the day I moved in here. So he comes by every other day to rest a bit, eat a bit and leaves again to do whatever he does out there

So, I've had an avatar for quite a while now and haven't posted here, figured I should rectify that.

I don't normally like having an avatar on forums, but when I became a moderator someone (I forget who) suggested that having one will help people recognize my posts, which I felt was a good point so I added one. At the time, I had just returned from a wonderful holiday my fiancee (then girlfriend) and I had taken to Tanzania. One of the highlights of the trip was four days at Zanzibar, which was, for me at least, rather the perfect seaside holiday. One one of the small islands near Zanzibar there is a giant tortoise sanctuary, where they wander around and are fed spinach leaves by tourists such as myself. We took a lot of pictures of them, but I figured that the one I use as my avatar, with its slighty alien look, would be a good fit for this forum.

Here's another picture of one of its cousins; if I were moderating the PP or PC forums, I may have used the top right corner of it as an avatar instead:

This is a snapshot of some art that I created as a Christmas present for my aunt.  It's part of something I figured out how to do late last year, to turn a photograph of an animal into a cartoon-style image.

The way I do it generally only works with short-haired animals that have very distinct bold lines.  I have tried this with my own dogs, but the results were not good because they are too fuzzy, and they end up looking like amorphous blobs instead of puppies.  My aunt's dog Rowdy, however, has nice short hair.  So I asked her for her favorite pictures of her dog, telling her it was for a surprise.  She emailed them to me, curious as to what I was up to.  So I made up the image, uploaded it to my CafePress store, and ordered a mug and a tote bag with the design printed on it.  I'll give it to her the next time I see her.  :)  I hope she likes it (though I don't think she'd tell me if she didn't).

(This is also the same technique I used to create the horse in my Drabblecast illustration of "Malish":

I feel for ya.  But lemmie tell ya, I go through keyboards pretty quick.  They're just not designed to deal with the claws... and it's hard to keep 'em retracted when people are being wrong on the internet!
