As an outgrowth of the Where is everybody located? (http://forum.escapeartists.info/index.php?topic=1370.0;all) thread in About PseudoPod, we created a map so that all of the forumers could see where everybody else is, so I'm posting it here for all the people that don't look in the Pseudopod forums. Feel free to join, or not to join, it's about a 10 second process and the only additional information you're giving beyond what you give to register here is your general location, obviously.
Unfortunately the Flash app is done in such a way that I can't embed it in here, but I'll try to keep the screen shots somewhat current.
Click here to see the map/add yourself! (http://www.frappr.com/?a=constellation_map&mapid=137440464359)
(Some people have noted having problems seeing attached images in posts, if you don't see the 4 screengrabs below this post, please let us know)

I'm starting to feel sorry for Cammo, all alone there at the bottom of the world. At least everyone else has somebody within 5,000 kilometers.
I'm finding it interesting that there's more of a Midwest population than East/West coast, even though the country's population is more concentrated on the coasts.

Is there any way to change the comment? Can't seem to change / delete the comment I left.

If you gave them your email they should have emailed you a password, login and click on the dot and you should see an "edit this dot" thing down at the bottom of the text bubble.

Kewl! (I've always been a sucker for maps.)

Ocicat and I are practically neighbors.

I'll be updating the maps about once a day from now on, or if there's a deluge of new dots onto the map.
-
I'll add myself as soon as I remember how to add myself. Haven't been to Frappr in a couple years, and I think I forgot how to use it. (or, it might not work well with my browser + slow connection)

Now don't go feeling too sorry for me. I'm happy having no friends, and most of my enemies feel the same way.

Pacific Northwest - REPRESENT!

Could we somehow represent that there are two dots in Berlin. One is about 15km north and slightly east of the other.

I think one of you would need to put in the zip code equivalent. If they're different zip codes it'll move it, otherwise I'm not sure how to.

Ah. Gotcha. I will tonight with the updated screengrabs.

OK. Worked better today; loaded quick, and I now have a dot. (Thumb of Michigan.) :D

Oh, man. There's someone in Allendale, like 20 minutes from me. Cool. I haven't seen anyone named Anonymous post around here though... ???

You realise that you're going to have to visit Wahjamega (http://maps.google.com/maps?q=wahjamega,+mi&ie=UTF8&ll=43.4568,-83.43855&spn=3.907874,10.898438&z=7) and let us know if there's anything strange going on there, right?

Now you're being silly.
What's the difference between blue and yellow dots?

What's the difference between blue and yellow dots?
You can apparently set gender, so male(blue) and female(pink — I didn't pick the colorsnevermind it's red), however none of the girls have declared themselves as such for the maps. Yellow's someone who hasn't declared.

Didn't see a place for that. Have to check that sometime.
-
it depends if you are just a yellow dot or a super intelligent shade of blue.
yellow dots are visitors, blue are guys, guess what the red dot is for...
super intelligent shades of blue are egotistical maniacs. Sooo you for one should be a SISoB

Either I added myself anonymously and missed it... or there's another Baltimorean in the house.
(If you tell me who you are, I promise not to call you "hon".)

Hey, who's in Salem Oregon?
-
A witch!
Oh, that was the other Salem, wasn't it? Hrm. Must be someone who didn't walk away from Omelas.

No, somebody's an even closer neighbor of mine than Ocicat. He/she/it didn't identify on the map, though.

Yeah, there was also somebody in Michigan that put their entire street address but left out their name. It's weird what people think is private data and what isn't.

With a US street address you can go in to that county's website and get all kinds of information about that property, including owner's names, prior sales, building information, etc., and sometimes even a picture of the property. It varies from county to county but most MN county's websites have this info.

You can do a lot with just a name and general area of location, as long as it's not John Smith. I've had to do lookups while I was doing an internship, and I've heard Private Eyes talk about what they can do. (Scroll about two thirds down this page (http://www.hopenumbersix.net/speakers.html) to "Privacy is Dead — Get over it" or click here (http://www.hopenumbersix.net/mp3/16/privacy_is_dead.mp3) for the mp3 (~an hour))

that was a strange story I had to read it for a writing class a few years ago
did you ever figure out what the O was for?
we could not figure that one out in class
just out of curiosity what is up with Wichita there are a bunch of random points there w/o names or anything
-
did you ever figure out what the O was for?

"Salem Oregon?"

That is what le Guin always says. "Omelas" was named after a sign for Salem, Oregon, as seen in her rear view mirror.
As an aside, am I the only one who thinks that those who walk away, leaving a small child to be tortured are no less evil for not benefiting from that torture? Surely the only moral choice is to stop the torture, thereby destroying Omelas, right?
-

Probably not.
... and would anybody care to tell me what story we're talking about here? I've figured that it's by LeGuin, but what's the title?

Texas- that explains your "Explosions in the Sky" avatar.

I see that bolddeceiver is another almost-neighbor of mine, in Kirkland ... I lived there from around 1982 to 1987 (graduate of Juanita High School) and later I worked there from 1999 to early 2006.
-
I see lowky is in Grand Canyon... we'll be visiting up there some time in June. My greater familial unit is located in the Phoenix area, and we want the kids to get to see the big hole while we're back there to see them.

Heh. Have you ever tried admitting to being a girl geek? The best it gets you is funny looks. Speaking from experience, I don't recommend it.
OK, some half hour later...
The more I think about it, the more I realize that most intelligent women I know are pretty resistant to being grouped by gender alone. I was actually mildly indignant at the categories available on the map. What in heck does my gender have to do with liking speculative fiction??? How about, which of the podcasts do you listen to? And what about the "super-intelligent version of red" which seems to be missing?
Or, the choices could be defaults, in which case I apologize for beating you up over them...

They were defaults, and by the time I noticed them people had already chosen some of them, so I figured to just let people choose for themselves and mess with it by adding in the nonsense categories. The 'Superintelligent Shade of Blue' is actually a reference to Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, so I'd take that up with Douglas Adams, who shouldn't be dead but is. It should be in no way construed as a gender reference, because it isn't.
Really, I don't think gender matters at all. It was a default, people chose it, or didn't chose it. We've discussed the whole gender in SF ball of wax extensively elsewhere, most recently in the fantasy women thread (http://forum.escapeartists.info/index.php?topic=1519.0;all).
Anyway, welcome to the forum, don't feel the need to identify any more or less than you want to, and if you have any gender-related problems here, let one of the mods know and we'll look into it.

Texas finally doesn't feel as lonely. Props on recognizing the album cover Darwinist, are you a fan?

Proud girl geek right here! I'm the red dot by Chicago. I've actually gotten some very positive reactions (among the funny looks). I met my boyfriend in a bar where I overheard him discussing Joseph Campbell's influence on George Lucas in writing the Star Wars movies. I went over to tell him that though Lucas had done well with the hero-myth structure, I found his characters and dialogue flat. We've been together happily for more than two years.
I meet many of my geek friends in similar ways... never be afraid to admit it. Geek girls are cool, and no one can convince me otherwise.
I've been wanting to put up a link to Ernie Cline for a while, and this is the best tie-in I've found yet... Check out "Nerd Porn Auteur" and "The Geek Wants Out." http://www.ernestcline.com/spokenword/

Ditto. I met my fella by being a girl geek, and we've been together over ten years now.
-
GirlGeek here too! I met my guy online, in a MUD.
I really liked Mur Lafferty's t-shirt, which she wore in some of her episodes of This Day In Alternate History (http://www.lulu.tv/vlog/thisdayinalternatehistory). It read "I LESS THAN THREE GEEKS". Cool!
-

Yes. It is perfect music for walking my dogs in the snow on a quiet, freezing cold night. I started as a fan of Sigur Ros and was referred to Explosions in the Sky and Mogwai. Love it.
-
Cool, we've got a radio station in Austin that tries to play local bands as much as possible - it took me a while to get used to them, but I like them a lot now.
-
Woot!
First New Mexican. Yes, New Mexico is part of CONUS, contrary to some public officials opinoins. (Long story)
-
Four Canadians! Alright!
-
Finally able to add myself. Internet explorer wouldn't work so I had to use Chrome.(yuck)

-
What version of IE?
It is IE 7.0.6001.18000
I generally have not had a problem but lately I have found that pull down menus and some scripts do not work while they work in chrome. I couldn't find and settings altered but stuff mysteriously happens when Microsoft is involved. I would switch over but I can't stand the interfaces of either Firefox or Chrome. But this is not the forum for complaining about software so I will stop now. ;)
-
We love to know who we're stalking, right?
Jokes aside, I've added myself with a portrait of Queen Victoria as my personal image. See you on the dark side of the moon!
-
OK, I'm added (Lake Forest, CA).
-
Done, Guisborough, England

Holy fuck, we are neighbors! :) I'm less than a mile from SE 82nd and Otty.

Well, we're moving in April, and then I'll be an Oregonian, too (Hillsboro, outside Portland). I'll change my map dot once we're moved in.

You're way to the west, but still in the area.
Arion is roughly five miles from my house.
-
Well, I finally got the Frappr Map to load completely so I could move my pin. I'm officially an Oregonian!
-
Cool... someone else lives in my city! Oh, it's just that Zathras (Zorag) guy. ;)
-
Added myself. I am SO far away from the most of yous.

We have at least two other Aussies here. Although one of them lives in Germany right now.
-
Added another Canadian, over in Ottawa.

Moving my pin was easier then I thought :) Good, since I'll be moving it again next year.
